Edogawa Rampo and Kim Rae Sung are leading detective novel writers in Japan and Korea. In 1936, Rampo published a juvenile detective novel, The Fiend with Twenty Faces, in Shonen Club, and Kim Rae Sung published his first juvenile detective novel, The White Mask, in Sonyeon in 1937. From the mid 1930s to the late 1930s, the culture of publishing children’s books in Japan reached its peak, and Shonen Club was enjoying its best days in 1936. Meanwhile, Sonyeon was a new magazine founded by the Chosun Ilbo in 1937 for children. However, both Shonen Club and Soneyon were not free from censorship due to the Sino-Japanese War. To sum up, Rampo and Kim Rae Sung wrote a juvenile detective story in different places called Empire and Colony, respectively, ahead of the Sino-Japanese War. Rampo’s The Fiend with Twenty Faces was in line with the intention of Shonen Club, which used “Education Outside School” as its editorial policy, and Kim Rae Sung’s The White Mask was also in accordance with Soneyon, which was censored by the Japanese Government General of Korea. As a result, at the end of the two works, we feel darkness, sadness, fight, and despair in the cries of boys who sing hope, saying, “There is no darkness, no sadness, no fight, and no jealousy.”

Arishima Takeo wrote Samson and Delilah(1919) that was based on the story of Samson and Delilah in the Bible. First, when we speak of the story Samson, we usually recall the betrayal of Delilah. But unlike Delilah in the Bible, Delilah betrayed Samson in Samson and Delilah because she loved Samson. Women’s betrayal is repeated in Samson and Delilah. Also there are a number of instances of the verb ‘see’ in Samson and Delilah. In addition, Samson is a person who is influenced by what he ‘sees.’ But according to Samson’s mother, Samson is a person who cannot see clearly and rightly. For Samson, the meaning of ‘seeing’ was emphasized when he lost his sight. In other words, Samson could see clearly after losing his sight. It means that the plot of Samson and Delilah consisted of the processes that change from ‘sight’ to ‘blindness.’ I think that finding the meaning which underlies these processes is Arishima Takeo’s Samson and Delilah’s innovation. At the end of the story, ‘blind’ Samson confessed, “After losing my ugly sight, Samson’s eyes can see the heart of the Lord.” Samson could realize the fact that he was the one who betrayed God. In short, Samson and Delilah can be read as a story of Samson’s betrayal of God.

Arishima Takeo wrote Before the Great Flood (1919) that was based on the story of Noah’s Ark in the Bible. Christianity remained an unsolved problem to Arishima, even though he apostatized from it. In this paper, I study how Arishima rearranged the story of Noah’s Ark through Before the Great Flood. First, Before the Great Flood is literally described as depicting the world of ‘before the Flood.’ That means that there is no God’s salvation available like ‘after the Flood.’ Also, Noah and his family obey God’s word in the Bible, but Japheth, a son of Noah, asks why only his family survives to the last and agonizes about it in Before the Great Flood. It is nothing less than Arishima’s doubt about ‘being chosen’. Meanwhile, Darren Aronofsky’s movie ‘Noah’ was released in 2014. In spite of nearly a century’s interval, ‘Noah’ and Before the Great Flood have several similarities. While each of them is recreating Noah’s story in their own ways, they still have their own similarities with the Bible. For Arishima, it was an essential step in structuring his ideas about Christianity.

Arishima Takeo tried to organize his Christian ideas through The Lord's Supper. The Lord's Supper is an important work for understanding Arishima’s Christianity. First, I considered Maria. Pharisees brought Maria, an adulterer to Jesus and tested Jesus. Jesus forgave Mary. Arishima solved his sin problem with Jesus’ forgiveness and love. Also, Maria was the only woman who understood Jesus. It was because “Her many sins have been forgiven - as her great love has shown.” I claim that this is the key to understanding Maria. In addition, I considered Judas, who betrayed Jesus. Through Judas’ betrayal, Arishima could admit himself as a betrayer. Arishima was able to tell a story that he had restrained himself until now through The Lord’s Supper. It was on sins, on himself for betraying Christianity, and on Jesus as Man.
