Vol.51 No.-
In the 16th-century Joseon Dynasty, there were two different theories of nourishing life, which were presented from the perspectives of the Neo-Confucian self-cultivation and the Taoist long and immortal life, respectively. Confucian scholars’ nourishing life was based on the former perspective. Their pursuit of nourishing nature and life was mediated by the nourishment of mind. The primary goal of nourishing life is to prevent disease. In case a person has become already sick, food, Doin (physical exercise) and medicine are applied to cure sickness. Accordingly, the way of nourishing life consists in recovering and preserving life in good condition. The first step of this process is the mind control. In other words, the essence of nourishing life is not the physical exercise. The well-preserved life is founded on spiritual and inner awakening. In particular, the 16th-century Neo-Confucian scholars understood that life is completely nourished by training both the inside and the outside. According to the theory of Li and Ki, which is the philosophical background of those Neo-Confucian scholars, the inside and the outside or the mind and the body [理氣] are organically related to each other. In this regard, the 16th-century Neo-Confucian scholars commonly thought that the communication between the two sides could preserve the health of mind and body. Noh Su-shin seems to be a faithful follower of the Neo-Confucian idea of the nourishment of life. Sukheungyamaejamhae (夙興夜寐箴解) and Chisimyanguibosinchiyo (治心養胃保腎之要) clearly show his position. ukheungyamaejamhae describes details of daily cultivation of mind. This phrase conveys a clear message that the Neo-Confucian cultivation should be applied to every area of daily life and every phase of the whole life. Chisimyanguibosinchiyo presents a concrete process of securing the health of mind and body and achieving the nourishment of life in virtue of comprehensive medical knowledge. In addition, Sukheungyamaejamhae could also be fully understood from the perspective of the theory of nourishing life.

Reading the original text is the best way to find out the significant contents to us these days in our tradition. Here I searched the reference to the married couple in the Doctrine of the Mean and the Book of Changes. According to these books, a life is created from the harmony of the male and female principles, and the husband and wife is the relation to reflect the theory faithfully. Ultimately the married couple is the connection trying to maintain plentiful life by interchanging their demands, and usually bears new lives in this process. The husband and wife can consider each other through deliberation to save lives with each other, and elevate their own value at the same time. The new life born of the married couple is not only the gift but also the program to study the living and continuative relations. There are some factors of discrimination between men and women in the confucian culture. We are against the debate upon the inequality in it. Nevertheless, I still pay attention to the meaningful element in the confucian culture. It will be the wisdom of today people to reflect on the wrong understanding of convention, and to seek necessity of nowadays in our way of thinking inherent in our own origin. The most important virtue in the confucian culture is to value much of the relationship. It especially emphasizes that the attitude helping each other to live in easy circumstances must be interchanged by considering each other, namely Sang-saeng(相生). The careful concern on the basis of understanding each other is the key to mutual understanding, and it is said that the first step of this relation originates from the married people. In conclusion, the man and wife is the underlying connection trying to help each other to live in easy circumstances, and the relationship to exchange abundant lives through it. The communication founded on the life of the husband and wife, therefore, will spread abroad among all human relations and all kind of existences, and change into the energy which actualizes the mutual help to live in easy circumstances on the basis of the reciprocal respect.
Vol.25 No.-
