The main role of CAB(side curtain airbag) is head protection in a side crash. The updated US NCAP for model year 2010 requires more extended coverage of CAB by regulating 5th%ile driver and rear passenger as well as 50th%ile driver. The general safety analysis model is efficient by using only concerned sub-structure of the full vehicle and prescribed structural motion. But, regarding optimization, the analysis model needs to be more efficient because more runs are required and model should be heavier to consider extended sub-structure. In this study, three types of simplified analysis models were introduced. The first has an impactor which is composed of head and neck with prescribed translational motions. It uses only the upper parts of the original sub-structure so the run time can be saved by 60~70%. But the efficiency is still insufficient and it showed relatively high sensitivity to initial conditions. The other two models use a linear impactor with head or head and neck and simplified structure by transforming 3 dimensional structure to 2 dimensional fixture. These methods save about 90% of the simulation time. Among the three models, two were chosen based on the accuracy and the robustness against initial conditions. And DOE were done using the two selected models to find out which one is the most competent for optimization.

Today, the stability control of the automotive electronic components and its new technology are being developed rapidly. Generally, the AVN system that can support various media such as DMB, MP3 and MPEG4 are powered by the battery of the car that has not been stabilized and the fluctuations in the battery input may result in poor quality of the sound and video output stream. To solve this problem, EMC test is conducted to the AVN system and the system is re-designed if the requirements in the EMC standard are not met. This paper presents SI(Signal Integrity) analysis techniques to secure reliability and stable functionality from fluctuating input from the battery. Some of the techniques of SI analysis include CE(Conducted Emission), RE(Radiated Emission), Cross-talk and SSN(Simultaneous Switching Noise), and these techniques are used to analyze operational characteristics to minimize the functional error by considering the CPU, DDR2 memory and its address.

The fatigue properties curve (S-N curve) of the chassis components is presented in this paper. The structural stress of weld joints edge is used for the amplitude stress of S-N curve. The structural stress is consistent with elementary structural mechanics theory and provides an effective measure of a stress state that pertains to fatigue behavior of welded joints in the form of both membrane and bending components. In order to consider the effect of mean stress, the mean stress correction has been calculated according to the FKM guideline. The S-N curve of standard fatigue specimens is compared with the S-N curve obtained from fatigue test of chassis components. The S-N curve from standard fatigue specimens is well correlated with the S-N curve of chassis components. Therefore, the S-N curve obtained from standard fatigue specimens is expected to improve the reliability of the fatigue analysis of the chassis components

Automotive cockpit module should be designed with considerations of design trend and its function. It has to meet regulations like domestic safety standard 88, ECE 21, FMVSS 201 as functional part. It also has to meet passenger airbag deployment requirement requested by OEM. In case of passenger airbag deployment test, it is performed under temperature controlled conditions like cold, room, hot temperature. The deployment test is done in very short time. FE analysis is used to predict the performance of passenger airbag deployment in advance. To do FE analysis of passenger airbag deployment, rate dependent material data with fracture characteristics under temperature condition is required. This study is about the rate dependent material properties with fracture characteristics under temperature condition.

There have been many kinds of simplifications and limitations in evaluating the thermal performance of disc brakes using the analytic technologies which were established before. But now new virtual test technology with several advanced analytic techniques was developed to evaluate the thermal performance without any possibility of great errors that used to happen for the time-consuming analyses. As a result, it was estimated that the virtual test technology could afford to replace the physical dynamo test since the reliability of virtual test technology was reasonably verified with the existing data measured in dynamo test.

In the present study, noise levels of the components (blower, heater unit, duct) and combinations of the components are measured to investigate the characteristics of HVAC noise and to understand the contribution of the components to overall HVAC noise. In addition, noise levels of a HVAC system equipped with different ducts are compared with those of the original HVAC system to investigate the effects of the geometry of ducts on the noise<br/> level of HVAC system. Test results show that noise level increases in the following order: HV (HD) < V (D) < BH ~ BHV (BHD) < B (B, H, V, D denote for blower, heater unit, vent duct, defrost duct, respectively). The effects of windshield glass on the noise level in the case of defrost mode are very large and the effects of the geometry of ducts on the overall HVAC noise prove to be not small.

Euro NCAP, KNCAP and other regulations for pedestrian protection are leading appropriate structural parts of front area of car when vehicle engineering design. In this paper, injury results of impact between lower legform and car bumper are considered using CAE, and internal stiffener for pedestrian safety is introduced. Usually, the stiffener for lower impact results is made of plastic material. Aspects of CAE, more accurate material model is needed for loading conditions such as high velocity impact of legform. For more accurate CAE results, tensile test of plastic specimen was performed with variable loading velocity. With the tensile test results, analytical material models considering strain-rate effect were set up. Using this material models, lower legform impact analysis was performed and results comparison between CAE and test was done.

Recently, for cost saving purposes and to reduce the number of parts, chute type of PAB door is preferred when designing PAB Module. The chute type PAB having less mass and number of parts than that of steel-made, an optimization of tear seam and hinge structure is crucial, especially for successful opening of the door in the event of PAB deployment. In this study, a frequent failure of the door hinge was focused and failure modes were categorized based on past record that resulted failure, and a new way of designing the door was proposed to minimize the failure. As a consequence, sensitivity analysis with hinge structure as the design factor was conducted through finite element method and a design guideline to reduce failure was suggested based on the results.
