Korean higher education institutions are facing unprecedented pressure at the threshold of the 4th industrial era. In response, they are reflecting and re‐shaping their identities in order to innovate. This study aims to interpret how today’s Korean universities represent their identities in the ‘Welcoming Message from the President’ on their university websites. The linguistic messages and images of the pages are analyzed from the perspective of critical discourse analysis. The analysis results can be summarized in terms of field and tenor. First, the findings suggest that most of the universities view themselves as having led the country’s democratization and industrialization, and they are preparing for our future society. Since universities are an institution closely related to their host society, this research indicates that the institutions focus on social responsibilities required in the contemporary Korean society. Second, the results show that the trend towards internationalization in universities around the world is also influencing the identity shaping of Korean universities. The Korean university discourse is identified as more customer‑oriented than ever. These features are revealed in both linguistic messages and also images.

This study aims to examine from a multimodal discourse perspective what university English homepages in South Korea represent and how they communicate with non-Korean language readers. Specifically, it analyzes what content they focus on and what visual and verbal resources are selected to constitute the contents. A sample for this study is composed of ten Korean universities (five national universities and five private universities). The multimodal analysis results show that the homepages allocate a big portion of their main screens to school rankings and research results through their content organization and the presentation of semiotic modes such as language and image. Also, when two types of university, national and private ones, are compared, the private universities can be characterized as more user-friendly than the public in terms of how they deliver their representation.

Using an analytic framework derived from the work of Martin and White (2005), this study compares Korean and American news editorials about the Korean ferry disaster in 2014. The aim of this study is two-fold: one is to explore how cultural and situational context influences stances on a specific event and the other is to demonstrate how Martin and White’s appraisal framework can be used for a comparative discourse analysis between Korean and English. The results revealed that the disaster was portrayed from a different angle in the two cultures. Korean editorials focused on details of the accident as an inside viewer on the spot and subjectively described their stances by restricting dialogically alternative positions and voices. American editorials focused on its general surroundings as an outside viewer and made allowances for dialogically alternative positions and voices. These findings suggest that psychological and physical distance as well as culture is an important variable in cross-cultural discourse study and that the appraisal framework can be of much use for a comparative discourse analysis between Korean and English.

The HANARO, a 30 MW multi-purpose research reactor in Korea, will be equipped with a neutron guide system, in order to transport cold neutrons from the neutron source to the neutron scattering instruments in the neutron guide hall near the reactor building. The neutron guide system of HANARO consists of the in-pile plug assembly with in-pile guides, the primary shutter with in-shutter guides, the neutron guides in the guide shielding room with dedicated secondary shutters, and the neutron guides connected to the instruments in the neutron guide hall. The functions of the in-pile plug assembly are to shield the reactor environment from a nuclear radiation and to support the neutron guides and maintain them precisely oriented. The primary shutter is a mechanical device to be installed just after the in-pile plug assembly, which stops neutron flux on demand. This paper describes the mechanical design of the in-pile plug assembly and the primary shutter for the neutron guide system at HANARO. The design of the guide shielding assembly for the primary shutter and the neutron guides is also presented.

The purpose of this study is to explore how Korean universities recognize the future by investigating the use of language on the “Greetings from President” page of 30 Korean university websites from the perspective of discourse semantics. To this end, 1) it examines whether universities as a leading institution in predicting the future and fostering talents in the society, exist as an influential or affected entity in its relation with ‘the future.’ 2) In addition, it investigates how the future is represented in a discourse, using Martin & White (2005)’s Appraisal Theory as an analysis frame. The results of the study show that universities view the future as an object that can be changed and created with their current efforts and can be given the direction in which it should move forward. Another finding shows that it is not a momentary situational judgement or emotion that affects the way universities perceive the ‘future’, but cognition created by long-standing practices.

This paper presents an experimental study on the flexural performance of concrete members strengthened with external steel plates for the purpose of improving seismic performance. In order to strengthen the structure, a strengthening method was applied that wraps the walls and columns with steel members. The partial section of the wall with the longest span in the structure was manufactured in real size and the strengthening effect was confirmed by performing a static load test. As a result of the experiment, it was confirmed that the strengthened section exhibited sufficient flexural performance satisfied to the seismic requirements, but the behavior until failure was not obtained because of actuator capacity. It was confirmed that the strengthened member resists the out-of-plane moment with a composite behavior. It was verified that the stiffness and load carrying capacity of the strengthened member were improved compared to the non-strengthened member by displacement and strain measurements.
