Lexical Frames in L2 Writing Development: A Longitudinal Study
신유경(Yu Kyoung Shin),박시온(Sion Park) 한국영어교과교육학회 2020 영어교과교육 Vol.19 No.4
Lexical frames are fixed, high-frequency sequences of function words, with free slots filled by lexical words (e.g., the * of the, in the * of). Most existing research on lexical frames focuses on the lexical words as the variable component, rather than on the function words; very little research has considered English learners’ grammatical errors with these “fixed” elements of lexical frames. This study investigates one EFL learner’s use of and accuracy with recurrent word sequences and lexical frames in terms of English articles over time, using longitudinal data of the academic texts from her high school and online university classes. The findings show that the learner has come to use more types of lexical frames, which typical of academic prose. In addition, the learner made more article errors in lexical frames in high school, which suggests the need for research to take account of such errors, rather than treating function words in L2 lexical frames as fixed. The study concludes with a discussion of pedagogical implications, including the effects of the shift from face-to-face to online courses at the university level.
연구논문(硏究論文) : 도시 내 십자형 교차로 경관의 개방성에 관한 연구

An important factor in assessing the beneficial qualities of a city’s intersection spaces can be measured by examining a pedestrian’s approach to the space and calculating the openness observed in the overall design of adjacent buildings. These spaces are influential, since they offer opportunities for pedestrians to spend time and take in views of the surrounding environment. The intersection of horizontal components in cities such as Bundang-si and Suwon-si can provide a sense of openness or greenness. We believe that there is a need for careful analysis and study of such components, as defined by designations in Bucheon-si research, and that this study can give important insights for future urban planning and design. When assessing the openness of an intersection, a key variable is the reported rate of perforation, which factors into the greenness of a space. Because of the large and varied scope of this research, this rate is highly variable, as there were many differences between each site. In descending order of average ratios: Seongnam-si, 41.79% > Bucheon-si, 35.40% > Suwon-si, 30.42%. The data compared for each city was divided into study sites selected at downtown locations as well as in urban outskirts. Openness and greenness were analyzed at each downtown and outskirt site. A summary of the results shows a decreased openness average of -2.63% in downtown locations versus outskirt. The greenness ratios in urban outskirt areas were 4.86% greater than downtown locations on average. As it relates to the results of this analysis of openness, the comprehensive property zoning for each city was determined as a ratio of residential to commercial designations. This study analyzes view points within urban cross intersections in the downtown landscape. It presents basic data and research directions to promote a better environment with regard to openness, and consists of an analysis of the relationship between a variety of physical components.
대학교 신입생들의 정형어구 사용 연구: 기능 언어 오류분석
신유경 ( Yu Kyoung Shin ) 한국외국어대학교 외국어교육연구소 2021 외국어교육연구 Vol.35 No.1
Recent research on native versus nonnative uses of recurrent multiword sequences typical of academic prose reports that native-English-speaking writers employ a wider range of sequences than do nonnative writers. Few studies have, however, considered sequences with grammatical errors used by nonnatives although such erroneous uses may be prevalent. This study uses comparable native and nonnative corpora of freshman compositions (controlled for writing prompts) to investigate learners’ English article errors in lexical frames and in lexical bundles. This study uses comparable native and nonnative corpora to investigate learners’ English article errors in lexical frames and in lexical bundles. The findings show that native student writers appear to use more types of bundles with frames typically found in academic prose than do nonnative writers when only error-free sequences are counted. However, when potential frames/bundles containing article errors are taken into account, the nonnative writers are found to use a broader range of filler types in the open slots for lexical words than do the natives. The results may be of a great help in understanding English learners’ actual uses of formulaic sequences (including their attempted but misused sequences) in academic prose.
