This paper is to evaluate fracture characteristics of API 2W Gr.50 TMCP steel weldment typically applied for offshore structures, with the focus on the influence of heat input arising from flux cored arc welding. Based on the results and insights developed from this study, it is found that the toughness for both CTOD and impact exhibits a tendency to decrease as the weld heat input increases. The reheated zone of weldmetal exhibit lower hardness than solidified zone and microstructure that are liable to affect the toughness are acicular ferrite and martensite-austenite constituents (M-A). In particular, M-A is a more effective micro-phase for CTOD toughness than impact toughness.

Clad steel has good corrosion resistance and mechanical properties arising from the hot rolling of dissimilar metals, such as carbon steel and stainless steel. However both good corrosion resistance from the cladding plate material(stainless steel) and mechanical properties from the base plate material (carbon steel) are difficult to obtain because the different steels display opposite behaviors during the cladding process. In order to make clad steel for application in the hulls of ships, proper materials selection and heat-treatment conditions are necessary. In this study, mechanical properties of base plate materials with different chemical composition were evaluated according to heat condition of cladding plate material.

Needs for structural integrity procedure such as BS 7910, the nuclear industry document R6 Rev.4 and the European FITNET procedure are being increased in industry. Especially, BS 7910 allows metallic structures to be assessed on the basis of fracture mechanics analysis rather than strict adherence to design and fabricated codes. This study is to propose the flaw assessment to judge the toughness level of welding consumables at the development stage. The FCA welding consumables with YP 690MPa and CTOD over 0.25 mm have been developed and its allowable weld flaw size considering actually applied environment has been evaluated. Since the estimated allowable defect size is sufficiently detectable in nondestructive testing, the toughness of the developed material is judged to be appropriate and no problem in securing the structural integrity.

Nickel alloy, especially Alloy 625, is used widely in industrial applications such as aerospace, chemical, petrochemical and marine applications due to their good mechanical properties, excellent fabricability, weldability and good corrosion resistance. Especially, it is obviously applied in FPSO’s moon pool structure and caisson tubular of CPF under seawater environment. Recently, UNS S32654 was developed to substitute alloy 625 because of high cost price. In this study, mechanical properties and corrossive properties of UNS S32654 are reviewed and proposed its applications.

Carburizing treatments are the important way to developing fatigue strength and wear resistance. It is well known that the case depth is one of the most significant parameters determining fatigue strength. In this study, 3-point bending fatigue test was conducted to evaluate fatigue strength for the carburized depth with 18CrNiMo7-6 steel. As a result, fatigue strength increased with effective case depth decreased. It is shown that hardness in case hardened layer played principal role in the fatigue strength.
자동차 배기계용 AISI 409L 페라이트계 스테인리스강 용접부 물성에 관한 연구

In this study, we prepared a sample of AISI 409L weld metals using automotive exhaust manifolds and evaluated their corrosion properties by conducting an anodic polarization test after 10 minute of heat treatment at 900℃. The specimens of AISI 409L transformed fully ferrite. Weld metal was refined more than base metal. Specimen of heat treatment at 900℃ and as weld specimen was formed precipitation. However heat treatment specimen was bulkly formed and coarser than the as weld specimen. The strength measured by 10 Hv highly at heat treatment specimens in comparison with as weld. The increase in strength is attributed to the precipitation of Ti. The result of heat treatment suggest that there was a decrease of current density and high corrosion potential. Following heat treatment process produced Ti precipitation and for this reason, it can restrain Cr-carbide so that steel will have more corrosion resistance.

This paper identified the effects of Nb on microstructure. Also, it has studied on uniform and pitting corrosion resistance in a ferritic stainless steel weld metal of the automobile exhaust system. We fabricated 3 flux cored wires designed with 0-1.0 wt% Nb and performed Flux Cored Arc Welding. We observed the microstructure with the SEM/EDS and EBSD. To evaluate the uniform and pitting corrosion resistance, we performed a potentiodynamic polarization test in 0.2 M H2SO4 and 0.1, 0.3, 0.5 M NaCl. As a result of the tests, we found that as the amount of addition of Nb rose, the amount of Cr-carbide fell. The microstructure became more refined. The specimen with 1.0%Nb added had the highest uniform and pitting corrosion resistance. After the pitting corrosion test, a pit was formed at the grain boundary that has no addition of Nb. In addition, in the specimen with added Nb, pits were formed at the inclusions.

Fracture toughness is an important parameter in designing offshore structures to ensure resistance to fracture at various temperatures. In this study, a series of experiments is carried out to obtain fracture toughness values (CTOD) of API 2W Gr.50B, welded using FCAW(Flux Cored Arc Weld). In particular, a comparison of absorbed impact energy and CTOD values are made with respect to two different welding groove shapes; double-V-groove and double-bevel-groove. Charpy impact tests are performed for specimens sampled near the root gap, and CTOD tests are carried out for three point bending specimens having the notch at weld zone. While Charpy impact test result is determined to be a good qualitative measure of fracture toughness, no quantitative correspondence between impact absorbed energy and CTOD values was found. Based on the experiment, it is observed that double-V-groove welds give lower transition temperature than those of double-bevel-groove.

YP 690MPa grade steels are used as the main structural steel for offshore structure such as Jack-up Rig and WTIV(Wind Turbine Installation Vessel). Most of welding consumables applied to YP 690MPa grade steels are basic type flux cored wires that shows the poor weldability and not suitable for all position welding. For this reason, welding consumables with rutile type flux system is required. Rutile type flux cored wires show excellent weldability and apply to all position welding. This paper presents the mechanical properties of weld metal with rutile type flux cored wire developed and finally assessed the possibility for application.
