The center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale(CES-D) was developed to be appropriate for use in studies of the epidemiology of depressive symptomatology in the general population. The purposes of this paper were to examine the scale's reliability and balidity for its use in Korea, and to examine the factor structure of the CES-D in the nation-wide community samples. The Korean version-CES-D was applied to 50 normals and 30 depressive patients. We found that the CES-D discriminated well between the normals and the patient samples. There was a significant difference in average CES-D score of 24 and over be used to designate "caseness". The CES-D was found to be interenally consistent. Koreans were higher in CES-D scores than that of American. 4 items(positive affect items 4. 8. 12. 16 of CES-D) were seemed to influence on a higher score of Koreans. It was considered that the sociocultural characters of Koreans would be reflected in their responses to the above 4 items. The community samples revealed 4 factors from factor analysis of the CES-D. Different factor structures emerged for the Korean samples as compared to previous analysis of the CES-D with American population. We also found that the factor structures of the CES-D were influenced by the gender and the living area(Urban and Rural) of the respondent.
