Preference of Verb Thematic Role Assignment and Verb Selection Abilities in Persons with Aphasia
신수현(Suhyun Shin),성지은(Jee Eun Sung) 한국언어청각임상학회 2020 Communication Sciences and Disorders Vol.25 No.4
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to identify preferences of thematic role assignment in aphasia patients and to figure out the connection between thematic roles and verbs. Methods: Eighteen persons with aphasia and twenty individuals who matched their age and years of education and lived in Seoul or Gyeonggi participated in this study. The thematic role preference task measured ratio (%) of thematic role preference and the verb selection task measured accuracy (%). Results: First, both groups preferred theme to instrument. This can be interpreted to mean that in Korean thematic role hierarchy, theme is higher than the instrument. Second, the performance of persons with aphasia in the verb selection task was lower. This means that persons with aphasia have difficulty accessing verbs and the elements in their sentences. The difference in performance of the task was not significant, but persons with aphasia had a higher accuracy than the instrument. This can be interpreted as showing that the instrument becomes more active than theme when connected to verb. Third, both thematic roles showed strong correlations with aphasia severity. Theme was the prediction of aphasia severity approximately 74.5% of the time. This showed that persons with aphasia are also affected by the necessity of the argument. Conclusion: The preference of thematic role in persons with aphasia is influenced by its hierarchy. But in the connection of thematic role and verb, it is influenced by activation through semantic relation rather than syntactic structure. In particular, theme is a variable that predicts the aphasia severity.

This study proposes a feasibility of direct carbon dioxide capture and storage process for reducing the CO₂ emission on ships. Reduction of CO₂ emission from ship using conventional CO₂ reduction process is a great challenge mainly because of space constraints and utility consumptions. In this study, to overcome those constraints, HIGEE (High gravity rotary device) reactor which use the centrifugal force for the drastic increase of gas & liquid reaction was considered. For the analysis of feasibility of direct CO₂ capture from ship, based on a container ship with 20 MW diesel engine, conceptual design of Higee CO₂ capture process was performed. The results showed that using a Higee reactor, CO₂ emission from the ship could be drastically reduced without excessive energy consumption and space requirement. And it could be concluded that present novel CO₂ capture process using Higee rector could be one of the promising technology options for the direct CO₂ reduction from ship.
The Anxiety of Possibility as a “Creature” in Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein
Suhyun Shin Ewha Institute of English and American Studies 2018 Journal of English and American studies Vol.16 No.2
Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein or the Modern Prometheus (1818) represents the anxiety of possibility as a creature and shows humble recognition of a creature within the structure of tales-within-tales. Victor Frankenstein’s anxiety is engendered by his transgressive autonomy, but finally, he discovers that he is a mere creature and realizes that the anxiety of possibility can be resolved by domestic affections. This paper argues that Victor Frankenstein embodies an overreacher’s anxiety as a creature, founded on Mary Shelley’s theism and points out that life is a homeward journey. Firstly, I deal with how Victor’s anxiety is engendered by the act of transgression, along with Soren Kierkegaard’s notion of anxiety. Secondly, I contend that the Creature is a dark double of Victor which reveals Victor’s feeling of terror, as a usurper of the knowledge. And thirdly, I address the importance of domestic affections in the novel by focusing on Victor’s ultimate message to Walton and Walton’s return to home.
