A methodology of selecting an optimal model is proposed for applying a SI method effectively. Instead of using a reduced finite element model, a reasonably detail finite element model is established first and then the model is identified by estimating its structural parameters. To satisfy the identifiability criterion, a parameter grouping scheme is applied to control the number of unknowns. Among the simulated member grouping cases, an optimal model is selected as the one with the minimal error. Some statistical criteria are introduced and their efficiencies in determining an optimal model are compared through simulation study. The proposed approach has been examined through simulation studies on a single span box-girder bridge.

Concept of SI(system identification) is explained as an inverse problem. SI methods are classified by model-based and non-model-based algorithms. Depending on the type of measured response, static, frequency-domain, and time-domain SI methods are introduced. Issues related to each algorithm are discussed and their advantages are compared. The applications of SI methods for structural damage assessment are briefly reviewed through simulation studies.

A simple algorithm is proposed for computing dynamic displacements from measured dynamic strains. A beam theory is basically applied to relate the curvature and strain. Modal superposition using general coordinates are used to relate the curvature and displacement. Theoretical mode shapes of some of the lowest modes are used in the formulation. For the current study, only beam-type structures are tested. However, the idea may be easily extended to other types of structures.
