A pilot scale circulating fluidized boiler (CFB) for refuse derived fuel (RDF) is designed and constructed to demonstrate a performance of CFB technology for waste fuel utilization. The boiler has a design capacity of 6 MWth with 400 oC 38 ata steam generation performance. The maximum steam rate of the boiler was about 8 ton/h. The main component of the fuel was RDF (Refuse Derived Fuel) with high volatile contents and showed fast ignition and easy combustion. The pilot plant showed over 99.5% of combustion efficiency. Stable operation of RDF CFBC depended on the content of non combustion materials other than ash and fast removal of them. Emission level was under legal limit except that of HCl without external flue gas treatment facilities. Also about 60% of fuel chlorine was absorbed to fly ash particles. For HCl emission control flue gas treatment technology is required such as wet and dry scrubber in order to comply with Korean regulation.

순환유동층에서 나타나는 국내 무연탄의 낮은 연소성을 극복하고 비산재로 배출되는 미연분의 손실을 극복하기 위하여 분탄과 비산회를 혼합하여 성형한 성형탄과 무연탄의 혼소를 0.1 MW급 순환유동층에서 수행하였다. 비교 시험에서 원탄 연소는 다량의 미분의 비산과 연소로 상부에서의 과열을 일으켰으나 조립탄 연소의 경우 미분을 제거하였으므로 일정한 온도에서 연소되었고 운전이 가장 안정적이었다. 조립탄과 원탄이 혼합된 석탄은 다소 운전이 불안하였으나 원탄만을 연소시킬 때보다는 안정적 연소가 가능하였다. 조립탄에 성형탄을 혼합한 경우 조립탄 연소의 경우와 같이 원활한 운전이 가능하였다. 본 연구는 상용 순환유동층 보일러에서 성형탄 혼소가 국내 무연탄의 연소성 개선에 도움이 됨을 보여 주었다. To solve the problems of the low combustion activity of Korean anthracite and the abundant loss of unburned carbon in fly ash, pellet coal was fabricated from coal fines and fly ash, and the mixed combustion of coarse coal with the pellet coal was examined in the circulating fluidized bed combustor of a 0.1 MW scale test unit. In the combustion of the raw coal only, the significant amount of coal fines was entrained, resulting in overheat at the top of the combustor. With the coarse coal that most fines were eliminated, however, the combustion temperature was maintained stable. The mixed combustion of coarse and raw coals was also feasible even though it often went unstable. The mixed combustion of the coarse coal with the pellet coal was as stable as the coarse coal combustion, showing a promise that the combustion of the Korean anthracite in commercial circulating fluidized bed boilers could be further enhanced.

A pilot scale circulating fluidized bed for refuse derived fuel is developed and constructed in order to demonstrate efficient and safe utilization of waste fuel. The capacity of the facility is 8 steam tons per hour with the steam quality of 450?C and 38atm. The quantity and the quality of the produced steam is sufficient to produce 1MWe power capacity. The test operation proved the high combustion efficiency of 99% and up. The emissions of NOx, SOx in flue gas are below 100, 60ppm respectively with out any emission control. HCl emissions were above 400ppm at the combustor exit but reduced below 10ppm after scrubber.

Fuel flexibility of CFBC boiler was examined. Combustion characteristics of low grade coal, coal sludge, coal RDF mixture and RDF were compared. The operation result of a commercial 130TPH CFBC co-generation boiler burning a low grade Chinese coal were analysed. Burning characteristics of coal/RDF mixture and coal and industrial sludge mixture were studied in a 0.1MWth scale CFBC test rig. Also RDF fuel were tested in a 8TPH CFBC test facility. Though fuel characteristics were different, the combustion modes were all very stable. The temperature were maintained in between 800-950?C.

Effects of height from the distributor plate and bed height at minimum fluidization on the minimum slugging velocity have been investigated in a gas fluidized bed(0.1 m i.d. and 2.5 m height) using sand(mean diameter : 0.286 ㎜, apparent density : 2,561 ㎏/㎥) as bed material. Minimum slugging velocity decreased with increasing height from the distributor plate, however, increased with increasing bed height at minimum fluidization. A model has been proposed to predict the minimum slugging velocity based on bubble size correlation. The proposed model can predict the present and previous experimental results reasonably well.
