Commercial buildings account for a significant proportion of the total building energy use in Korea, and cooling energy, in turn, accounts for the largest proportion of total energy consumption in commercial buildings. Under this circumstance, chiller staging is considered to be a reasonable and practical solution for cooling energy saving. In this study, the part-load ratio and the operating characteristics of a vapor compression chiller were analysed within an office building. In addition, energy consumption among different chiller staging schemes was comparatively analysed. As a result, significant proportions of total operating hours, cooling load and energy consumption turned out to be in the part load ratio range from 0% through 50%, and thus energy consumption was significantly affected by the chiller COP at low part-load conditions, indicating that the chiller operation at the part-load is an important factor in commercial buildings. In addition, utilizing a sequential chiller staging scheme can reduce the annual cooling energy usage by more than 10.3% compared to operating a single chiller.

The term variable refrigerant flow (VRF) refers to the ability of the system to control the amount of refrigerant flowing to the multiple evaporators (indoor units), enabling the use of many evaporators of differing capacities and configurations connected to a single condensing unit. The purpose of this paper is to comparatively assess the cooling energy performance between direct expansion (DX) air handling unit (AHU)-water source VRF system and conventional AHU system through co-simulation between EnergyPlus and Matlab. Advanced control logic using EMS function was used in EnergyPlus for outdoor unit modeling and prediction models for cooling tower, boiler, pump were constructed in Matlab. As a result, DX AHU-water source VRF system can achieve the cooling energy saving by 14% compared to the conventional AHU system.

However, most of the studies were carried out on the chiller itself, i.e., the part load ratio characteristics and the corresponding electricity energy consumption patterns were not analyzed in existing studies. In this study, the part load ratio and the operating characteristics of the vapor compression chiller were analyzed within an office building equipped with the conventional variable air volume system. As a result, significant portions of total operating hours, cooling load, and energy consumption turned out to be in the part load ratio range of 0 through 50%. Thus, energy consumption was significantly affected by the chiller COP at low part load conditions, indicating that chiller operation at the part load is an important factor in commercial buildings.
Variations of PMV based Thermal Comfort and Cooling/Heating Load according to MET

Purpose: Korean government originally established the target of greenhouse gas emission reduction by 30% by the year of 2020, but adjusted the target to 37% reduction by 2030, recently. The efficient indoor environmental control is an essential factor for the achievement of the goal. However, most of the indoor environment control is based on the dry-bulb air temperature, which is one of the most simplified control methods having limitation to truly represent thermal comfort of individual occupants. A variety of factors affect the thermal comfort such as dry-bulb air temperature, humidity, air movement, radiation, clothing insulation and metabolic activity level. Method: In this circumstance, this study investigated the effects of MET (metabolic rate) on thermal load and PMV, which is the thermal comfort index considering all the comfort factors listed above. Four cased were simulated using EnergyPlus: Case1: 0.7 (Sleeping), Case2: 1.0 (Seated, quiet), Case3: 2.0 (Walking), Case4: 2.3 (Fast walking, Dish washing). Result: It turned out that indoor air temperature in MET 0.7 Case can be even 10℃ higher than that in MET 2.3 Case to accomplish the same PMV in the summer period and that MET has dominant effects on heating and cooling load in residential buildings.
국내 기상조건하 주거용 건물 가스 보일러의 부분부하 특성과 에너지 사용량 분석

Residential buildings account for a significant portion of the total building-energy usage in Korea, and a variety of research studies on the domestic boiler have therefore been carried out; however, most of these studies examined the boiler itself, whereby the part-load ratio characteristics and the corresponding gas-energy consumption patterns were not analyzed. In this study, the part-load ratio and operating characteristics of a domestic gas boiler were analyzed within a residential building equipped with a radiant floor-heating system; in addition, the energy consumption between condensing and conventional boilers was comparatively analyzed. Our results show that significant portions of the total operating hours, heating load, and energy consumption are in the part-load ratio range of 0 through 40%, whereby the energy consumption was significantly affected by the boiler efficiency under low part-load conditions. These results indicate that the part-load operation of a boiler is an important factor in residential buildings; furthermore, replacing a conventional boiler with a condensing boiler can reduce annual gas-energy usage by more than 20%.

In this study, the part load ratio and the operating characteristics of gas boiler were analysed within an office building equipped with the conventional variable air volume system. In addition, the gas consumption among different boiler staging schemes was comparatively analysed. As a result, significant portions of total operating hours, heating load and gas consumption turned out to be in the part load ratio range and thus the energy consumption was significantly affected by the boiler efficiency at low part load conditions. In addition, utilizing sequential boiler staging scheme can save gas usage by 6%.
