Objective : This experiment was designed to investigate the effect of Thalictrum foetidum(TFD) on the Alzheimer`s disease. Method : The effects of TFD on amyloid precursor proteins(APP), acetylcholinesterase(AChE), glial fibrillary acidic protein(GFAP) mRNA of PC-12 cell treated by amyloid β protein(Aβ) and IL-1β, IL-6, TNF-α mRNA of THP-1 cell treated by lipopolysaccharide(LPS), AChE activity of PC-12 cell lysate treated by Aβ and behavior of the memory deficit mice induced by scopolamine, and glucose, AChE in serum of the memory deficit mice induced by scopolamine were investigated, respectively. Results : The results were summarized as follows ;1. TFD suppressed APP, AChE, GFAP mRNA in PC-12 cell treated by Aβ.2. TFD suppressed IL-1β, IL-6, TNF-α mRNA in THP-1 cell treated by LPS.3.. TFD suppressed AChE activity in cell lysate of PC-12 cell treated by Aβ.4. TFD increased glucose and decreased AChE significantly in the serum of the memory deficit mice induced by scopolamine. 5. TFD group showed significantly inhibitory effect on the scopolamine-induced impairment of learning and memory in the experiment of Morris water maze. Conclusion : According to the above results, it is suggested that TFD might be usefully applied for prevention and treatment of Alzheimer`s disease.

Objective : Amplitude reductions and timing delays of various components of the electroretinograms have been reported in diabetic retinopathy. We checked the electroretinogram in diabetic patients to evaluate retinopathy severity and the rate of subsequent retinopathy progression. Material and Method : In cross-sectional fashion, standard ERG and Fourier transforms of oscillatory potentials were evaluated in 356 eyes of 178 diabetic patients. The reference group consisted of 80 eyes of 40 healthy subjects. The possession of clear media and attached retina were criterion for inclusion in this study. Results : Thirty-three of the 146 eyes showed perfectly normal electroretinograms in no diabetic retinopathy, 3 of the 39 eyes in mild background diabetic retinopathy, and none in advanced diabetic retinopathy. Generally, the implicit time was affected more frequently than the amplitude in early stage. Exceptionally the amplitude reductions of the rod response b-wave, and the first and second oscillatory potential could be more frequently observed than the delays of the implicit times. Only in advanced retinopathy there was a gross reduction in amplitude, especially of the oscillatory potentials. Conclusion : The good indicators for retinal dysfunction in all levels of diabetic retinopathy were the maximal response a-, b-wave implicit time, second oscillatory potential amplitude, sum of oscillatory potentials and 30 ㎐ flicker implicit time. The summed amplitude of the oscillatory potentials was correlated with the total power and dominant power of the oscillatory potentials. Therefore, the measurement of the total power of the oscillatory potentials may not be required to routine diabetes management.
