Vol.20 No.5

The high-tech computer technology developments have greatly affected the area of design education. Starting from the mid 80s, innovations in visual presentation methods have heightened with 2D computer graphic programs, CAD & 3D modeling, and Rapid Prototype that allows dimensional generation. The specialty and quality in design studio education have advanced due to the development in presentation methods such as Power Point and Keynote. But there are many problems with the current method of presenting the visual outcome in a data format using beam projectors, which is a vertical presenting method compared to the old studio study method of conducting discussions and reviews based on the substantial outcome. The essence of studio study that allows for comparisons and analysis by horizontally opening up the various work outcomes is being offset. Also the requirement for manual idea sketching work that plays an important role in the initial design phase continuing to decrease due to the digital working process dependence and cumbersome procedures in the presentation. In order to resolve this problem, the CALM system (Class Applied LCD Modular System) has been developed that replaces the method of attaching the sketches or renderings on the wall with a digital multi-display system. In a nutshell, individuals will upload the outcomes online and display them on the CALM system studio that is composed of 32 LCD (Columns: 4 X Rows: 8) monitors that are 19 inches in size so that various personnel can openly study the design outcomes. Also the central 42 inch PDP monitor that offers touch pad capability allows each design outcome to be described and examined by expanding. The concept phase of this development process has elevated to the production of an operating prototype that is being reviewed of its practicality. It is considered that the development of this system will decrease the extreme tendency of depending on digital operation but achieve revitalization of a more realistic and opened studio study environment compared to the individual consulting method of the old study approach.

Vol.25 No.3

3D form study is one of basic subjects in industrial design education. There are an array of textbooks of visual art, design and architecture, most of which address basic geometrical form study and abstract forms. With the introduction of computerization, current trends are directed to reduce basic form education and students’ participation in classes and their accomplishments. This study was intended to develop works under a theme of furniture design with concrete shapes and functions. This study focused on developing relevant process by fusing 3D form study and furniture design which fall into basic design and design studio subjects, respectively. Among 3D form studies, applied were a concept of 3D configuration that explores the relations between surface forms and 3D forms. Furniture design is a challenge to students at beginner or intermediate level in basic design education from initial devising stage to production in kind. To ease high level of difficulties at designing and producing stages, technical education was systematized in the process of conceptualizing, developing idea and production. This type of challenge was carried out during separate semesters, along with a case study done to develop different types of challenges. This study helped students to be motivated and actively participate in classes and well perform advanced form study and technical training from design to actual production.

Vol.27 No.4

In design education enhancement of design methodology and creativity can be stimulated through taking on several creative roles within an interactive and enjoyable studio course. To overcome blocks to creativity I developed a intermediate course, ‘Furniture Design Studio I’ at the sophomore advanced level course. Inventive thinking and a sense of aesthetic are the essential element for all studnets to grow as a professional designer. And to develop their creative thinking skill I introduced a system that utilizes each element into a role-playing type of projects. Students will be able to demonstrate their underlying creativity in a more open environment. Instead of stressing to solve a lot of complicate issues, the main focus is to allow freedom of expression and creativity. Role-playing are executed in a design studio environment rather than in a psychodrama situation. There are two different type of role-playing : Inventor and Designist (Designer + Artist). Students will be able to work in groups, incorporate problem solving into their projects and concentrate on more personal creative form developments. Through this process, students will enhance their problem solving abilities and broaden their scope for innovation. Thus increases the student’s participation and creativity. Investigating the problems of domestic design education through these sort of special programs and developing systems that enhance creativity based on the results and the process methods.

Vol.23 No.2

The main objective of this study is to explore methods to generate and develop its design concept of the discord generated due to this by deeply considering the existing design concept of a new town or site planning. In particular, in case when designers participate in a process of planning new town, this study aims to reveal methods generating design strategy and basic ideas for designing street furniture through cases study of projects by understanding and analyzing concept of overall space planning and by developing direction for deployment of specific designs. First, further concepts of the space planning, which decides overall flow of visual design concept of street furniture, is extracted through analyses of basic concepts of space design with doing Focused Group Interview among designers and planners. Then, by applying 3V Design Process, alternatives of the concept generation are suggested through methods of storytelling and visual language under the two approach methods of verbalization stage and visualization stage. Also its process were explored through suggestion of designs by developing each idea of the respective concepts into specific design vocabulary.

In this paper, we proposed a RTOS-based lighting control system to improve energy efficiency. This proposed system, real time process was designed to the specified division of the LED streetlight control module for the RTOS-based lighting control into three different tasks. The first task transmits LED lighting signal by measuring illuminance, and the second task transmits motion detecting signal using motion detector. In the third task, lighting control to LED was designed through passed control signal from other tasks The execution status was examined ports that are directly to the ATmega128 MCU for the verification of the system, and illuminance distribution and operating conditions were verified through LED street field test. The proposed RTOS-based lighting control system has brought improving system performance and also facilitate an addition of other functions, and it was possible to optimize energy saving by intelligent lighting pattern control.
