Fluid flow and temperature distribution inside a molten zinc bath were investigated by computational fluid dynamics method. Modeling the channel inductor where alternating current of 60㎐ was applied, Lorentz force and generated heat were obtained and later supplemented as source terms to momentum and heat equations. The present work validates CFD technique is effectively adopted when the inductor hardware modification or its configuration is considered for the optimum flows.

Fluid flow and temperature distribution inside a molten zinc bath were investigated by computational fluid dynamics method. Inductor position was 100㎜ lowered and the effect on fliud flow was analyzed by comparing the computational results with the original inductor position one.

3-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations are solved by the numerical procedure of finite volume method to investigate the effect of argon injection to the molten steel flow in a wide slab continuous caster. Argon fraction is first calculated and its buoyancy force is added to the source term in momentum equation. The flow pattern changes from the typical double roll to single roll due to the buoyancy effect.

To optimize the molten steel flow in a mold is a key technology to improve the quality of steel cast products. A new device, FC mold (flow control mold) was developed to reduce surface defects and internal defects originated from non-metallin inclusions. FC mold has two pairs of poles which generate static magnetic fields. One of the fields is imposed at the meniscus level and the other below the submerged entry nozzle. FC mold suppresses the velocity of molten steel from port, which has the effect of decreasing the downward flow velocity. Meniscus velocities show differnt directions according to the applied magnetic fields and the braking effect cannot be stated straightforward.

Argon flow rate, the depth of submerged entry nozzle,casting velocity and mold width have been varied to see their effects to the velocity and temperature on the meniscus. Computer simulation has been carried out to solve 3-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations with energy equation. k - ε turbulence model was adopted with body-fitted coordinate system.The effects of the above processing parameters have been analyzed.
