1.65V, 0.26C steel with addition of 1Ni was selected to investigate property variations according to the microstructural changes. Isothermal heat treatment was performed at 750℃ for 20 minutes and hardness was measured as Rc27. The structures were ferritic with two kinds of vanadium carbides i.e. fibrous carbide and particle-like one. The dual phase microstructures having the same Rockwell hardness were obtained by heating the vanadium steel at 900℃ for 10 minutes. The conventional quenching and tempering heat treatment was followed at 650℃ for 17 hours and the microstructures revealed Widmanstatten carbides and carbides precipitation at lath boundaries. The mechanical properties were determined from tensile tests and compared with the observed microstructures.

To optimize the molten steel flow in a mold is a key technology to improve the quality of steel cast products. A new device, FC mold (flow control mold) was developed to reduce surface defects and internal defects originated from non-metallin inclusions. FC mold has two pairs of poles which generate static magnetic fields. One of the fields is imposed at the meniscus level and the other below the submerged entry nozzle. FC mold suppresses the velocity of molten steel from port, which has the effect of decreasing the downward flow velocity. Meniscus velocities show differnt directions according to the applied magnetic fields and the braking effect cannot be stated straightforward.

Argon flow rate, the depth of submerged entry nozzle,casting velocity and mold width have been varied to see their effects to the velocity and temperature on the meniscus. Computer simulation has been carried out to solve 3-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations with energy equation. k - ε turbulence model was adopted with body-fitted coordinate system.The effects of the above processing parameters have been analyzed.

A New technique for determining 2-phase boundaries and 3 apexes of 3-phase triangle internary system is presented based on the convexified Gibbs free energy surface. Computer program which calculates equilibria over whole composition plane and any temperature ranges and graphics software which plots isoplethic phase diagram as well as isothermal were developed. This method was successfully applied to Fe-Cr-C system which has 10 phases in cluding 5 carbides.
