        자살과 죽음, 반연극적 유희의 방식 : Death of a Salesman 부조리 텍스트로 다시 읽기

        As for the suicide and death of Willy Loman, protagonist in Arthur Miller’s play Death of a Salesman (1949), previous studies, whether positive or negative, whether hopeful or pessimistic, acknowledge that it is the result of Willy’s willingness to choose and thus interpret him as the subject of action. The above interpretation raises the following series of questions. Is Willy truthfully the subject of the act? Is his suicide and death entirely the result of his will? Are there any irreversible external factors and forces that have driven him to suicide and death? Isn’t his suicide and death an inevitable and ‘given’ choice irrelevant to his will? As a result, isn't his suicide and death an action that lacks will and subjectivity, or an ‘anti-action’ from the absurdist perspective? These questions, in addition to the existing interpretations, open up new possibilities for interpreting Willy’s suicide and death. In answering the questions, this study attempts to reads the main character Willy’s suicide and death from the absurdist perspective. Accordingly, Willy's suicide is examined in terms of ‘anti-play’ playing, and interpreted as the act of ‘killing’ or 'filling' time which is carried out toward a scheduled death according to the ruled book.

        고결, 야만, 그리고 사라짐: 『메타모라』에 나타난 인디언 캐릭터와 미국 정체성

        “The noble savage” is one of the important motives in the early American literature. Referring to the Native Americans, more familiarly known as American Indians, the term reflects the contemporary white`s romantic gaze upon these so-called red-skin pagan tribesmen. The term also reflects the contemporary social needs to establish genuine and authentic identity of the US as distinct from British one, after the independence from the motherland. John Augustus Stone`s 1829 play Metamora is the representative reflection on the white`s romantic gaze upon the American Indians as well as their literary response to the social needs for the American tradition and national identity. This paper traces the process in which the positive images of the protagonist Metamora, meeting a sudden turn in the middle, are portrayed as negative in the second half, and the Indian chief eventually dies disappearing into history. This paper explores the following issues: the author`s intention to romanticize the Indian chief as the model of proto-American virtue and finally dispose him in the end; the implication of his disappearance in terms of the social needs and justification for American national identity; the collective emotions of the US citizens, related to the issue of national identity, as implied by the author`s literary choice and solution in the play.

        부재의 연극성 -『조식 전』에서 남성 정체성과 오닐의 자기반영

        Eugene O`Neill`s one-act play Before Breakfast (1916) depicts a morning scene of a married couple who live in a slovenly flat at Greenwich Village. There is no apparent dramatic action occurring in the play. Instead, the play is full of Mrs. Rowland`s incessant complaints about her husband Alfred`s loafing around bars with artists friends, neglecting his role as breadwinner. An irony is that every morning she prepares breakfast for the good-for-nothing husband even in the moment of complaining. It is worth noting that Alfred is an ``unseen character`` who is never directly observed by the audience but is only described by her wife. Deprived of all chances to speak and present himself on stage, he is kept in the room throughout the play. In contrast, Mrs. Rowland dominates the stage, monopolizing language and action. The audience has to listen to her, judge from her statements, and take her one-sided complaints. The accused husband, with zero chance of showing up and defending himself, has no choice but to be the sinner as the wife intends. Another irony is that the audience`s feeling about the situation is quite different from what is expected. The wife`s complaints are regarded to be unfair and groundless in the reason that the situation is monopolized by her. In case of the husband, in contrast, the loss of voice and presence stresses the injustice of his dead-lock situation. In other words, the ``absent`` quality of Alfred works to evoke the audience`s sympathy for himself and subsequently makes his presence recognized, not visually but emotionally, by the audience throughout the play. Discovered in this paradoxical moment where the spectators understand or ``see`` the status of the unseen and the devoiced message is successfully conveyed to the listeners, is the theatricality of absence. Adding to the function as theatrical device, the ``unseen character`` Alfred works as a device of self-reflection to mirror the author`s own life. Alfred, the alter-ego of O`Neill, effectively exorcises the author`s life-long feeling of guilty as the unfaithful husband and father in the unhappy first marriage, successfully evoking the audience`s sympathy for himself.

        허스튼의 『우핑』에 나타난 언쟁 양상과 전략

        ‘우핑’은 허스튼이 희곡 집필을 통해 가장 두드러지게 선보이는 남부 흑인의 언어 양태이자 전략이다. 특히 1931년작 단막극『우핑』(Woofing)은 상기한 언어 양태와 전략을 제목으로 삼아 전면에 부각하고 있다는 점에서 주목할 만하다. 본 논문은 허스튼의 극에서 재현되는 흑인 민중의 삶과 그들의 언어 양태인 ‘우핑’의 양상을 극중 발생하는 ‘게임 상황’의 관계 속에서 살피고, 여기에서 발견되는 의미와 함의들에 접근해보고자 한다. 극 전체를 통해 극중 인물들의 게임과 우핑 대결이 승부와 결론이 유보된 채 새로운 판으로 이어지는 지속적인 움직임, 그 과정 중 혹은 결과로 희극적 상황과 긍정의 에너지가 지속적으로 생산되는 다이내믹이 발견된다. 상기한 다이내믹이 극『우핑』을 관통하는 중심축이라면, 허스튼은 흑인 캐릭터들의 입담 경쟁 혹은 우핑 대결을 상기한 중심축을 구동시키는 언어 전략으로 활용한다. 우핑의 언어 전략으로 촉발된 희극적 상황은 체스 게임과 주사위 게임을 거쳐 음악대를 따르는 행렬로 이어지는 ‘중단 없는’ 상태를 지속적으로 가시화하면서, ‘영원한 현재진행형’을 지향하는 흑인 민초의 삶에 대한 애착과 생존 의지를 구현한다. ‘Woofing’ is one of the most notable verbal aspects and strategies of African-American folks Zora Neale Hurston features in her play writing. In particular, Hurston’s 1931 one-act play Woofing is noteworthy in that it highlights these verbal aspects and strategies of ‘woofing’ on the front, by taking the term as the play’s title. This paper examines the lives of black folks and their language aspects of ‘woofing’ as represented in the play, and explores the meaning and implications of the language aspects in relation to ‘game situations’ consistently occurring in the play. In the entire plot of the play is discovered a dynamic in which the games and contests are stuck in the middle without a chance of conclusion or movement, and in the course of-or as the result of-the confrontations comic situations and positive energy are produced incessantly. The dynamic is the axis passing through the play Woofing, and Hurston employs the verbal aspects of woofing as the driving force to make this axis work. The comic situations, originally triggered by the language strategy of ‘woofing’, continue to visualize the ‘non-stop’ state leading through the chess games and the dice playing to the procession of the band, which is the implementation of the black folks’ commitment to life and survival.

        정치현실과 문학적 상상의 간극읽기:

        머시 오티스 워렌은 미국 독립혁명기를 풍미한 정치선동 혹은 프로파간다 문학을 주도한 여성작가이다. 그녀의 일련의 정치풍자극은 미국의 식민지 상태를 영구화하려는 영국 왕실과 독립을 희구했던 미국시민 간의 갈등과 당대 정치 현실을 기록하고, 후자의 가치와 명분을 피력한다. 워렌의『얼간이들』(1776)은 혁명기 매사추세츠의 보스턴을 지역적 배경으로 하는 정치풍자극으로, 1776년 3월에 실재했던 시민군의 도체스터 하이츠 점령과 그로 인한 영국군의 고립과 불안을 다루며 불리한 전세 속에서 좌충우돌하는 친영 세력의 상황을 풍자한다. 본 연구는 정치풍자극 『얼간이들』을 미국 독립혁명기 프로파간다 드라마의 전범으로 규정하고, 이 극이 애국파 진영의 독립의지를 고취하려는 정치적 목적을 효과적으로 수행하고 있음을 밝힌다. 구체적으로 작가가 허구와 사실, 정치 현실과 문학적 상상의 간극읽기를 전략적으로 활용함으로써 독자와 관객으로부터 ‘극적인’ 공감을 끌어내는 동시에 그것을 ‘현실의’ 정서로 수렴시키는데 성공하고 있음을 밝힌다. Mercy Otis Warren is a female ‘propaganda’ writer who represents the American revolutionary era in the 1770s. She wrote a series of ‘pamphlet’ plays for political satire and recorded the conflict between the two partisans: the British Crown and the Tory who wanted to perpetuate the colonial status of America, and the American colonists and the Whig who wanted an independent nation, respectively, championing the latter’s patriotic cause and position. Her political satirical plays portray the American political reality and the cause of independence at that time. Among others, The Blockheads (1776), set in Boston during the American Revolutionary War, deals with the ‘Fortification of Dorchester Heights’ which was a historical event in March 1776, and dramatizes the subsequent isolation and anxiety of the British troops and the pro-British Americans. This study defines The Blockheads as the model of pro-revolutionary ‘propaganda’ drama of the American Revolutionary era, and accordingly proves that this work effectively performs the political purpose of promoting the independence of the patriotic camp. Specifically, it is examined that the playwright Warren employs her unique strategy of interplay between political reality and literary imagination to make a ‘theatrical’ empathy from readers and audiences, while at the same time succeeding in converging it into ‘realistic’ emotions.

        2020년 1월 노후화된 공공기반시설의 효율적인 유지관리를 위해 『지속가능한 기반시설 관리 기본법(이하 기반시설관리법)』이 시행되었고, 법령에 따라 국토교통부장관과 기반시설의 관리감독기관장 및 관리주체 등은 기반시설에 대한 실태조사를 실시할 수 있게 되었다. 기반시설관리법 및 기반시설 실태조사의 본격적인 시행에 앞서 국내 기반시설별 관리체계에 따른 유지관리 정보를 총괄적으로 취합·분석하여 통일된 관리방향을 제시할 수 있도록 구체적인 조사방안을 수립할 필요가 있다. 본 논문에서는 기반시설 현황조사 방안에 대하여 소개하고, 조사를 통해 얻을 수 있는 자료 및 이의 활용방안에 대하여 알아보고자 한다.
