        Hospital, Goyang, Korea Purpose: Metabolic Syndrome (MetS) is defined as the coexistence of several metabolic risk factors. Diet is thought to play a major role in development of MetS. We attempted to determine whether the Korean diet is related to a reduced risk for development of MetS. Methods: A total of 425 healthy Korean adults were recruited by advertisement to Bundang Jesaeng Hospital from January 1 to June 30, 2009; those not taking regular medications and without diagnosis of disease were included. Data were collected on three-day dietary intake, anthropometric measurements, and diagnostic parameters, including levels of lipid panel, glucose, adiponectin, and inflammatory cytokines (interleukin-6 [IL-6], tumor necrosis factor-α [TNF-α]) for MetS from individuals enrolled in the study. The National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP) scoring system was used for diagnosis of MetS. Results: Out of 425 (11.8%) subjects, 50 were diagnosed as having MetS. As NCEP scores increased, the levels of inflammatory cytokines (IL-6, TNF-α) showed an increasing tendency, however, the adiponectin level had decreased (P<0.0001). A greater amount of total vegetable consumption appeared to be associated with decreased risk for MetS. A higher carbohydrate consumption represented by the amount of rice intake (refined starch) appeared to be associated with higher risk of MetS. However, increasing consumption of rice combined with Kimchi showed an association with increased high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (56.7±1.6 vs. 62.8±2.2, P for trend: 0.0321) and decreased adiponectin level (9.0±0.8 vs. 11.4±1.2, P for tend: 0.0255). Conclusion: Among healthy Korean volunteers consuming an ordinary Korean diet, the prevalence of MetS was found to be 11.8%. Greater consumption of rice showed an association with greater risk of MetS, while greater consumption of rice combined with Kimchi, the main staple of the Korean diet, showed an association with lower risk of MetS.         Purpose: It is a well-established fact that enteral nutrition is the preferred mode when compared with parenteral nutrition for the purpose of recovery and maintaining nutritional status not only in surgical but also in chronic debilitating patients. Further, this mode of nutrition is essential as it enhances preservation of gut mucosal integrity as well as immunity particularly in such patients. In a prospective multicenter clinical trial, we studied the effectiveness and safety of one specific enteral formula ‘M’. Methods: We recruited 30 patients who were admitted to three hospitals (two university hospitals and one general hospital) in a metropolitan area for either surgery or treatment. The patients were given the enteral formula M at the dose of 25 kcal/kg/day for 7±2 days. Thereafter, we evaluated the performance and nutritional status of each patient by applying subjective global assessment (SGA) scale, Karnofsky performance status scale, and stroke specific quality of life (SS-QOL) scale. We also measured the plasma markers specific to nutritional status of such patients. In addition, we also recorded the consequent dose-response clinical symptoms such as diarrhea, abdominal pain, abdominal discomfort, bloating, nausea, and vomiting. Results: We found that the SGA scale score did not show significant change compared to the baseline score. However, both the Karnofsky performance status score and the SS-QOL score showed the tendency of improvement compared to the baseline score. We also found that there was a decrease in the serum markers used to signify the nutritional status of the patients, but this decrease was statistically not significant when compared to the baseline score. Of the 30 patients enrolled for this study, 12 patients showed distinct clinical adverse symptoms. The most commonly observed adverse response was abdominal pain, although all other symptoms subsided spontaneously. Conclusion: We conclude that the administration of enteral formula ‘M’ to both perioperative and chronic debilitating patients hardly elicited serious adverse response. In fact, the formula was significant in preserving the performance status and quality of life of both perioperative and chronic debilitating patients. (JKSPEN 2013;5(2):76-81)

        라온 초전도 고주파 시험 시설용 EPICS 기반의 극저온 시험 소프트웨어 개발

        희귀 동위원소 가속기 시설인, 라온은 초전도 가속관과 초전도 가속 모듈의 성능 시험을 위하여 극저온 설비를 구축하였다. 일반적으로 열부하 측정 시험에서는 헬륨의 엔탈피와 밀도가 필요하다. EPICS를 기반으로 개발된 극저온 시험을 위한 소프트웨어는 측정된 헬륨의 온도와 압력을 통해 실시간으로 헬륨의 물성을 계산할 수 있다. 그리고 최근 헬륨 값의 상승으로 헬륨 저장량을 관리하는 것이 중요하게 되었다. 이 소프트웨어는 헬륨 저장량을 실시간으로 계산하고 저장할 수 있도록 개발되어 매년 혹은 매달 헬륨 손실량을 확인하고 조치할 수 있도록 도와준다. 개발된 소프트웨어를 이용하여 현재까지 진행된 극저온 시험에서 열부하를 실시간으로 모니터링하고 헬륨량을 감시하고 있다. 이 논문은 소프트웨어를 설명하고 결과를 보여준다. Rare isotope accelerator complex for on-line experiments (RAON) requires facilities used in cryogenic tests to validate the performance of superconducting components, such as SRF cavities and cryomodules. Generally, to measure heat loads of the components, a few properties of cryogenic fluids, such as enthalpy and density, should be known. To this end, a cryogenic test software is developed, which is based on EPICS. This software calculates the properties of the fluid in real-time using the temperature and pressure of the fluid, which are measured using sensors. In the facility, a main issue is the management of helium; this is because of the limited supply of helium and its cost, which has almost doubled in the last two years. Thus, the software also includes a real-time helium inventory monitoring function that can easily estimate annual total helium losses and average loss rate per month. This software is validated during a cryogenic test conducted on a valve box. The heat loads are successfully monitored in real-time; further, the total helium inventory is monitored as well. This paper describes the software and shows the test results.

        1. Protein methylase Ⅰ (S-adenosylmethionine[:]protein N-methyltransferase; EC 2.1.1.23) which methylates protein-bound arginine residues has been purified from human term placenta 400-fold with an approximate yield of 6%. 2. When histone was used as in vitro substrate, the methylation products were found to be N^G-mono-, N^G, N^G-di- and N^G, N'^G-dimethylarginine. The enzyme was found to be sensitive toward Cu^2+ with K_i value of 8 × 10 exp (-5)M. The K_m value for S-adenosyl-L-methionine was 5× 10 exp (-6)M. 3. When this partially purified protein methylase I was incubated with isolated human placental nuclei and S-adenosyl-L-[methyl-^3H]methionine, the major endogenous [methyl-^3H]-labeled proteins were protein species of 23, 38, 45 and 68 kDa, the 23 kDa species being the most predominant. 4. The endogenous enzyme activity during the pregnancy increased significantly, reaching more than 4 times the initial activity at the end of term.
