This paper examines the close connections between nature and human beings, between human beings in a community, and between human beings’ physical condition and their emotional state, through Karen Hesse’s book, Out of Dust (1997). It describes the harsh reality that farmers in Oklahoma, which was caused by the combination of the economic depression and the most destructive ‘natural disaster’ in the history of the USA, the so-called Dust Bowl. The Dust Bowl resulted from human abuse of the farm plains, the removal of the grass, and the destruction of the natural environmental balance in the plains. This novel, written in the form of a diary, portrays how destructive the dust and drought were during that period, and how devastated farmers’ lives were, focusing on one main character, Billy, her parents, and their neighbors. While this book warns against people’s greed for short term profit and shows their blindness concerning the consequent disaster, it also demonstrates what makes people overcome those hardships, and how the main characters sustain their hope for life despite bitter mistakes and conflicts. Hope is found in the comfort derived from the forces of nature and from people's love and forgiveness for each other, even though nature and people are the very elements that cause the misery and scars in their lives. Nature and people are portrayed in contrasting ways. No matter how destructive and threatening nature is, it is a fundamental influence on people’s lives, and no matter how unforgivable and disappointing people (especially family members) are, they may be a source of great support. Suggesting the importance of the interdependence between nature and human beings, and also between human beings, this book describes these connections by drawing parallels between these four aspects: 1) the state of nature, 2) the state of people’s lives, 3) people’s physical and emotional condition, and 4) people’s relationships. This book implies that nature, human beings’ physical and emotional condition, and the health of the community, are closely related to each other. This is related to an ecological perspective, which perceives the relationship between nature and human beings as an organic whole, no longer regarding them as separate entities.

Isothermal vapor-liquid equilibrium data have been measured for binary systems n-dodecane-1-defanol, n-doderane-1-dodecanol, and 1-decanoi-1-dodecanol at 140$^{\circ}C$ by using head space gas chromatography (H.S.G.C) as a static method. The activity coefficients, calculated taking into acount the nonideality of the liquid phase, were correlated with the conventional g$\^$E/ model, Margules, van Laar, Wilson, NRTL equations. These equilibrium data were thermodynamically consistent by Rrdlich- kister test, among these data, system n-dodecane-1-detanoi has minimum azeotrope.

Aqueous solution of sodium glycinate was checked as a suitable $CO_2$ absorbent from the flu gas in the thermal power plant. For this purpose, solubility, vapor pressure, latent heat of vaporization and thermal conductivity were determined for pure and aqueous solution of sodium glycinate. The solubility of sodium glycinate in the solvent, 25 g of $H_2O$, was increased with increasing the temperature and their relation was represented as a first order equation of y = 0.3471x + 20.993. The vapor pressure for 10 wt% to 60 wt% of aqueous sodium glycinate solution were determined and the latent heat of vaporization of each aqueous solution was calculated from measured vapor pressure using Clausius-Clapeyron equation. Besides, thermal conductivity of sodium glycinate powder was also determined and it was $1.0933kcal/m{\cdot}hr{\cdot}^{\circ}C$.

This paper aims to examine a truth about love - the close relationship between a person`s passionate love and that same person`s loneliness and suppressed desires, a relationship that Carson McCullers (1917-1967) portrays in The Ballad of the Sad Cafe. McCullers, one of several brilliant writers from Southern America, managed to overcome her cruel situation and showed deep insight into the human condition, particularly in regard to the relation between love and isolation. The Ballad of the Sad Cafe, like her other works, examines the spiritual isolation and the agony of love that three lovers experience. The love in this story is a triangular relationship among the three main characters, Amelia, Lymon and Marvin Macy. The distinctive characteristics of love described in this story are that each character falls into blind and passionate love for the person he/she loves, no matter how the beloved responds. Love also changes the lover, not the beloved, revealing the completely opposite nature of the lover. The opposite nature and the inner secrets that the love reveals about the lovers reflect their frustrated and suppressed desires, which is femininity and motherhood for Amelia, non-violent masculine power for Macy, and physical attraction and power for the hunchback, Lymon. These suppressed desires are rooted in the deep sense of frustration that they had to experience in their childhood. In short, the seemingly unconditional love of the main characters is not an ideal, altruistic love, but a reflection of their inner desires. This story, however, does not seem to criticize this kind of love but simply tries to give an honest picture of what love might be. It also admits that ``deformed`` love is still better than no love (and consequently no stimulus) because what really damages and causes decay in human beings and in a community, is the state of boredom.

This paper discusses the relation between post-human discourses and the concepts of adolescence, and examines Scott Westerfeld’s Uglies series, focusing on the concept of the human body being transformed using future technology, the matter of identity, and the growth of post-human adolescent characters. The adolescents are often characterized as ‘in-between’ and ‘hybrid,’ both including and excluding some characteristics of children and adults. This hybridity is also a characteristic of post-humans. The human body, transformed by future technology, is one of the controversial issues when people argue about a post-human society. Westerfeld’s novels are mainly about the highly advanced technology-based human body, and the specific standards of ‘beauty’ in a future society. In this society, called ‘The New Pretty Town’, everyone gets plastic surgery at the age of 16, and through the surgery, they obtain a ‘perfect’ face, new spotless skin, and a body with improved functions. However, this surgery is also a secret way of installing a ‘lesion’ in every adolescent, so that the ruling power can control their mindset and emotions for the security of the state. The children in Uglyville are educated to admire this standard of social beauty, and dream about entering the Pretty Town, after the surgery. However, the protagonist, Tally, with her friends, starts to take genuine adventures to restore her thinking ability, aiming to cure other ‘Pretties,’ and eventually uses her special ability to resist the controlling system and to overthrow it. Her subversion implies that even in a technological future society, subjectivity and the right to have freedom will be key issues for post-humans, and these post-humans are not going to give up such subjectivity. In Westerfeld’s novels, teenage protagonists are the people who resist the highly organized control system, and eventually find a new possibility, which is in line with other recent SF fictions whose protagonists are adolescents.
