        Intelligibility Analysis and Cultural Linguistics

        The global spread of English has resulted in an increasing number of cultures becoming associated with English (Smith, 1992). In the course of the development of new varieties of English, speakers associate their use of English with their own cultural schema. Therefore, world Englishes need to be examined from the perspective of Cultural Linguistics in order to gain a better understanding of how English is used by different communities of speakers around the world. This study investigates this concern, focusing on the English literature from different varieties of English. The study aims to get some insights into how intelligible it is to English speakers with different linguistic and cultural backgrounds and what factors are involved in the intelligibility of these English literatures from the perspective of Cultural Linguistics. The result shows that achieving a full understanding of the literary texts depends more on the readers familiarity with the cultural context and cultural schema within which the texts are embedded. The educational and theoretical implications of the findings are then discussed.

        CdS/ZnS 양자점 기반 플라스틱 섬광체 제작 및 성능평가

        현재, 감마 핵종 분석은 주로 무기섬광체 또는 반도체 검출기를 활용하여 여러 분야에 사용되고 있다. 이러한 검출기는 분해능이 좋지만 크기가 제한적이며, 가공성이 낮고 경제성이 플라스틱 섬광체보다 낮다. 따라서, 나노물질인 양자점과 플라스틱섬광체의 장점을 이용하여 양자점 나노물질 기반 플라스틱 섬광체를 개발하였다. 가장 많이 활용되고 있는 Cd계열 물질인 CdS/ZnS 양자점을 플라스틱 매트릭스에 교반하여 제작하였으며, 이를 <sup>60</sup>Co핵종 대상 계측 실험을 하여 상용플라스틱 섬광체의 성능과 비교 분석하였다. 상용플라스틱 섬광체 대비 CdS/ZnS 양자점 기반 플라스틱 섬광체가 20~30% 높은 효율을 보였다. 이는 의료분야뿐만 아니라 원자력 해체분야에서도 방사능 분석기로 활용 가능할 것으로 판단된다. Currently, gamma nuclide analysis is mainly used using inorganic scintillators or semiconductor detectors. These detectors have high resolution but there are less economical, limited in size, and low process ability than plastic scintillators. Therefore, quantum dot-based plastic scintillator was developed using the advantages of the quantum dot nanomaterial and the conventional plastic scintillator. In this study, efficient plastic scintillator was fabricated by adding CdS/ZnS based on the most widely used Cd-based nanomaterial in a polystyrene matrix. In addition, the performance of the commercial plastic scintillator was compared and it was analyzed through radiological measurement experiments. The detection efficiency of fabricated plastic scintillator was higher than commercial plastic scintillator, EJ-200. It is believed that this fabricated plastic scintillator can be used as a radioactivity analyzer in the medical and nuclear facility fields.

        한국 내 다문화 가정 아동들의 이중 언어 실태와어순에 따른 영어 학습에 관한 제언

        This study examines how children from multi-cultural family in Korea acquire English literacy by comparing the sentence structure, that is, word order, between English and the L1 of the child’s mother. On the assumption that children whose mothers’ L1 has the same or similar sentence structure with English will easily learn English, this study selected children from multi-cultural families with different mother tongues as subjects, that is, Chinese, Japanese and Vietnamese. To start with, to understand the current situation of multi-cultural family in Korea and bilingual education for the children from those families, this paper examines the history and development in governmental policies for those families. And then, this paper investigates how many children can speak their mothers’ L1, and what makes them learn the languages and which advantages bilingual children can get from bilingual environment as well. Finally, it proposes that children from multi-cultural family learn English in their mothers’ L1 additionally if the sentence structure and word order of the language are same or similar with those of English. Some pedagogical implications are also provided. (Kongju National University)

        소리 시각화 기술을 이용한 발음습득 지도 방안

        This research looks into a component of language in foreign language learning and teaching - pronunciation instruction and acquisition - and presents that computer-based training using sound visualization technique can be effectively implemented to Korean EFL learners to produce and perceive English pitch and durational contrast for words in sentences as well as for words in isolation. Training using sound visualization technique can be effective in improving second language learners’ perceptions and productions of segmental and suprasegmental speech contrasts. This study assessed the efficacy of a pronunciation training that provided visual feedback for EFL learners acquiring pitch and durational contrasts to produce and perceive English phonemic distinctions. The subjects’ ability to produce and to perceive novel English words was tested in two contexts before and after training; words in isolation and words in sentences. The findings support the feasibility of learner-centered programs using sound visualization technique for English language pronunciation instruction. (Kongju University)

        Textual Intelligibility across Cultures

        With the acculturation of English into a variety of non-native socio-cultural contexts where English is a major language(i.e., the Outer Circle of English) a concern often raised is that aspects of these varieties will not be understood by speakers of other varieties, ultimately leading to a breakdown in international communication. The growing body of Outer Circle English literatures, as well as spoken and other written forms of communication, has been the object of this concern. Critics of the new varieties of English tend to negate them on the grounds that they lack creativity and are slavish imitations of British English. This study investigates that concern, focusing on the English literature written in native variety of English and non-native variety of English. This paper attempts a contrastive study of understandability in two varieties of English and hopes to show that achieving full understanding of the stories depends more on the reader's familiarity with the sociocultural context within which they are embedded than on the form of the English used.
