This paper reports some progress on the development of hydrostatic high speed spindle for "Nano CNC Grinding Machine". The amount of fluid required, the load to be carried, and the temperature rise were calculated to determine the gab of the hydrostatic bearing. A prototype hydrostatic bearing was assembled and a series of experiment were performed. At 10,000rpm, the temperature rise on the front bearing and rear bearing were 4.2℃ and 5.2℃, respectively. The measured rotational error was 0.4㎛ and the thermal displacement on radial direction was 1.8㎛. These results indicate that the high speed hydrostatic bearing developed in this research in applicable in practice.

To improve the accuracy of a machine, research needs to be conducted on the relationship between the output variables and design variables of a spindle-shaped part from the thermal and static viewpoints. Therefore, research was carried out by examining the correlation of each variable to find the optimum conditions. Moreover, DOE (design of experiments) was extensively used. The model used in this study was a grinding spindle to which a hydrostatic bearing was applied. This model was used in a preliminary analysis based on the experimental results of the previous studies. The influences of the output variables and design variables were compared through a main effect analysis. Generated response surfaces were applied to the Kriging model. To optimize the model, a screening method was selected. In comparison with the initial model, the deformation of the optimized model designed by DOE decreased by 4.1 ㎛, while the thermal deformation decreased by 1.2 ㎛. Therefore, it was efficient to design a spindle-shaped part through DOE to improve the accuracy of the machine.

The hydrostatic bearings have a relatively small run-out comparing to its shape error by fluid film effect in hydrostatic state as like pneumatic bearing and have a high stiffness, load capacity and damping characteristics. In this study, we could confirm the reliability of the analysis by assessing the thermal characteristics through measurement of the grinding machine temperature and thermo-structural analysis and comparing the measured thermal deformation with the result of the analysis, and could identify the overall thermal characteristics of the grinding machine
