Prevot Background : Prevotella species is one of the major microoranism responsible for invasive anaerobic bacterial infection. This study was performed to investigate the clinical characteristics and outcome of invasive Prevotella infection in a University affi

Background: Infection due to gram-positive bacteria have been on the increase in recent years and methicillin resistance in S. aureus has been a problem in many hospitals in Korea. Teicoplanin is a new glycopeptide antibiotic structurally related to vancomycin, having an antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive bacteria including methicillin resistant Staphylococci. Methods: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of teicoplanin, an open, non-comparative clinical study was accomplished in 33 patients with septicemia (9), pneumonia (8), skin soft tissue infection (7), urinary tract infection (3) and end endocorditis (6). The usual dose of teicoplanin was 200 mg once daily intravenously after a loading dose of 400 mgs. Results: The causative pathogens consisted of Staphylococcus aureus (19), including methicillin resistent Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) (6), coagulase negative Staphylococcus (3), S.pneumoniae (5), Enterococcus (4), α-hemolytic Sereptococcus (2). The overall clinical response was 74% (26/35) and clinical failure was noted in 3 patients, recurrence in 4. Reinfection with E. coli after treatment was noted in 2 patients and adverse reactions such as elevated liver enzyms, rashes and dizziness were observed in 4 cases. Conclusions: Teicoplanin was a clinically useful and safe antimicrobial agent against Gram-positive bacterial infection including MRSA.
