Bridge piers typically have circular or rectangular shapes without decorative design. Prefabrication for accelerated construction has been widely adopted in bridge structures. Cost for steel formwork is a main restriction of creative irregular shapes. 3D modelling techniques allow creative design of columns and 3D printing provides possibility to minimize the fabrication cost. In this paper, 3D design process of bridge piers was suggested by converting 2D picture into 3D decorative shape. Formwork design using 3D printed panels was also proposed and mock-up tests were conducted. Precast columns need accurate geometry control from fabrication to assembly. Laser scanning and geometry control devices were adopted. Through the digitalized process of design, fabrication and assembly, creative design of structures can be realized in reasonable cost range.

Digital models for a cable-stayed bridge are defined considering data-driven engineering from design to construction. Algorithms for digital object generation of each component of the cable-stayed bridge were developed. Using these algorithms, Level-3 BIM practices can be realized from design stages. Based on previous practices, digital object library can be accumulated. Basic digital models are modified according to given design conditions by a designer. Once design models are planned, various applications using the models are linked the models such as estimation, drawings and mechanical properties. Federated bridge models are delivered to construction stages. In construction stage, the models can be efficiently revised according to the changed situations during construction phases. In this paper, measured coordinates are imported to the model generation algorithms and revised models are obtained. Augmented reality devices and their applications are proposed. AR simulations in construction site and in office condition are tested. From this pilot test of digital models, it can be said that Level-3 BIM practices can be realized by using in-house modeling algorithms according to different purposes.

Aesthetic design guidelines of bridges were developed in many countries. As iconic structures, bridges need to be attractive and durable as they serve many generations. In this paper, a new design process of concrete structures considering 3D shapes and texture was proposed. The 3D design needs to consider function, economy, advanced technology, tradition and local culture. 3D printers enable the combination of artistic design and engineering design for concrete structures. Parametric modeling with iconic design was utilized to produce 3D formworks. As a pilot project, a railway bridge girder was designed and the proposed technologies were applied. Detail requirements to improve constructability and quality of concrete surfaces were derived. From the pilot applications, design guidelines were suggested.

Future performance prediction of bridges is challenging task for structural engineers. Well-organized information from design, construction and operation stages is essential for the assessment of structures. Digital twin model is a new concept to realize more reliable data platform for management of infrastructures. Damage history including degradation of material, cracking, corrosion, etc. needs to be accumulated in the digital model. The digital model is linked to the analysis model for the assessment of structural performance considering changed mechanical properties of structural components. In this paper, initial definition digital twin model of a PSC-I girder bridge is proposed.

Geometry control of precast members is the most important technology for modular construction. In this paper, image-based modeling and rendering (IBMR) technology was adopted for 3D modeling of precast elements. It is necessary to use match-casting method for precast post-tensioned column assembly. Preassembly using 3D models created by image processing can minimize construction error. Augmented reality devices are used to check the geometry of the segment. Laboratory-scale tests were performed. The proposed process has been applied to the real precast bridge pier segments.
