Retirement For Cause

For gas turbine engines, the safe life methodology has historically been used fur fatigue life management of failure critical engine components. The safe retirement limit is necessarily determined by a conservative life evaluation procedure, thereby many components which have a long residual life are discarded. The objective of this study is to introduce the damage tolerant design concept into the life management for aircraft engine component instead of conservative fatigue life methodology which has been used for both design and maintenance. Crack growth data were collected on a nickel base superalloy which have been subjected to combined static and cyclic loading at elevated temperatures. Stress analysis fur turbine disk was carried out. The program for computing creep-fatigue crack growth was developed. The residual lifes of turbine disk component under various temperatures and conditions using creep-fatigue crack growth data were estimated. As the result of analysis, it was confirmed that retirement fur cause concept was applicable to the evaluation of residual life of retired turbine disk which had been designed based on the conventional fatigue life methodology.

Miniaturized specimen technology is useful to characterize the mechanical behavior when it is difficult to sample the material enough for the test. In this study, two kinds of miniaturized Charpy impact specimens(i.e., miniaturized specimen with side groove and without side groove) of aged 1Cr- lMo-0.25V steel were prepared and tested. The relationship between the extent of degradation in terms of ductile brittle transition temperature(DBTT) and the fracture stress of 1Cr-1Mo-0.25V steel was established. The fracture stress obtained from miniaturized specimen without side groove turned out to be linearly related with the DBTT of standard specimen. Therefore the fracture toughness of aged turbine rotor steel might be evaluated by the fracture stress. In addition, the correlation between DBTT of standard specimen and that of miniaturized specimen was investigated. As the results of normalizing DBTT by maximum elastic tensile stress, the normalized DBTT of miniaturized specimen without side groove allows one to estimate that of standard specimen.

Since the examination of CTOD problem revealed that the discrepancy among CTOD's was a matte., of definition, the relationships among parameters based on different definitions have been studied Particularly, the relationship between $\sigma$BS R-curve based on BS 7448 and R-curve based on the recently introduced $\sigma$5 parameter was investigated in this research. For the comparison, compact tension specimens of used 1Cr-0.5Mo steel, heat treated 1Cr-0.5Mo steel to mimic the new one, A12024-T6, and A12024-T351 were prepared and tested. Consequently, the relationship between $\sigma$5 and $\sigma$BS R-curves for tested materials were established by shifting the rotational center which could determined by rotation factor and ligament size.
