Rhus verniciflua Stokes (RVS) has been used as a food supplement and a traditional herbal medicine for a men's sexual enhancement. In this study, we prepared a flavonoid fraction (RWE) from a hot water extract of RVS and its influence on sexual behavior was studied in male rats which were orally administered varying doses of RWE for 2 weeks. All doeses of RWE stimulated sexual behavior in male rats such as reducing mounting latency and enhancing mount frequencies. However, intermission numbers were not changed and none of group can observe the ejaculation during behavioral testing time 5 min. Testosterone levels were increased about 0~53% and 92~164% by the treatment of RWE for 1 and 2 weeks, respectively. However, estrogen levels in male rats teded to decrease in a dose dependent manner of RWE. At the dose of RWE 200㎎/㎏, estrogen level was reduced to 77.5% and 70.3% of control after 1 and 2 weeks treatment. These findings suggest that the Rhus flavonoid fraction can stimulate the androgen-dependent male sexual behavior and it can applied to the material of functional food for enhancing the sexual function.

It has been reported that there are two distinct phenotypes in Frarinus mandshurica Rupr. growing in Korea. Recently developed polymerase chain reactioniPCR) was used to detect DNA sequence polymorphism in the species. Using a thermostable DNA polymerase and synthetic DNA primers, unknown DNA sequences from the species were randomly amplified. The two types of the species produced different DNA amplification pattern with three different primers tested, Although DNA polymorphism was detected among individuals within types, each type has its own distinct pattern. The two types could be easily differentiated by trier characteristic predominant bands.

Rhus verniciflua Stokes (RVS) has been used as a food supplement and a traditional herbal medicine. In this study, we prepared various flavonoid fractions (RS, RW1, RW2 and RWE) from a hot water extract of RVS and their influence on male reproductive organs and spermatogenesis were studied in rats which were orally administered 200 ㎎/㎏ of them for 8 weeks. All experimental groups did not show any significant changes in body weight and blood clinical chemistry for liver function. Plasma testosterone level was elevated about 3.7, 5.2 and 6.3 folds in RW1, RW2 and RWE groups, respectively. The weights of testes and epididymides tended to increase slightly without the statistical significance in RW2 and RWE. The spermatozoon motility and epididymal sperm concentration were significantly increased (P < 0.05) in RWE and RW1, respectively, when compared to the control group. There was no significant difference in histology and apparent shape of testes and epididymides among the control and the experimental groups. Collectively, RWE showed effectively the elevation of plasma testosterone level, spermatozoon motility and the epididymal sperm concentration without the significant increase of testis and epididymides weights. When the component HPLC profile among the flavonoids fractions of RVS was compared, the ratio of components were only different. These findings suggest that the Rhus flavonoid fraction, particularly RWE, can stimulate the androgen-dependent male sexual function and it can be applied to the material of functional food for enhancing the sexual function.
옻나무 칠액성분 중 Urushiol 의 암세포 증식억제 효과 - in vitro 세포독성효과 -

This study was conducted to screen the biological activity of urushiol in the sap of lac tree(Rhus verniciflua STOKES) which has been used in traditional folk remedies. Cytotoxic activity of urushiol was screened with L1210(mouse luekemia cell), PC-9(human lung adenocarcinoma cell), A427(human lung adenocarcinoma cell) and KATO IlI(human stomach adenocarcinoma cell) The stepwise hexane : acetone eluent fractions of the urushiol were obtained by the silica gel adsorption column chromatography and added to the culture media containing L1210, PC-9. A427, and KATO III, respectively. A hexane : acetone(90 : 10, v/v) eluent fraction of them showed the lowest 50% inhibition concentration(IC_(50)) of 0.018㎍/㎖ for the cell line of A427. Much lower level of IC_(50) of the hexane : acetone(90 : 10, v/v) eluent fraction of the urushiol showed the equal inhibition effect with tetraplatin(i.e., anti-cancer drug of platinum complexes) on the cancer cell lines as follows ; 3.4 times lower for L1210, 3.9 times lower for PC-9, and 105.5 times lower for A427. However, IC_(50) of the hexane : acetone(90 : 10 v/v) eluent fraction for KATO III was exceptionally 3.9 times higher than that of tetraplatin.

Megagametophyte tissues from seeds of 45 loblolly pine clones were subjected to horizontal starch-gel electrophoresis. The resulting gels were tested for activity of five enzyme systems (GOT, SDH, PGM, MDH, and AP). Isozymes observed were under control of 11 loci. All 45 clones could be identified with unique genotypes at above 10 loci.

The stimulated secretion of golden varnish sap by the infection of microorganisms on the bark of Dendropanax morbifera Lev. was observed in the natural habitats. Four candidate strains of such microorganisms(i.e., Sb1, Sb2, Sb3 and Sb4) were isolated from the bark of D. morbifera which was infected in natural. Of them, Sb3 and Sb4 strains showed stimulated secretion of golden vernish sap with the greatest stimulation by Sb4 strains. The yield of golden varnish sap from the bark of D. morbifera was boosted about 3.4--7.7 times by the inoculation of Sb4 strain in compassion with that collected from lacquer tree(Rhus verniciflua Stokes) by the traditional method. The mycelium color of Sb4 strain was grayish white. The optimum growth temperatures and pH were ranged from 30 to 35℃ and from pH 6.5 to 7.0.

The ecological characteristics of 10 natural stands of Dendropanax morbifera(Haenam, Wando 1, Wando 2, Bogildo, Kemundo and Hongdo and Sendol, Suoak, Hannam, and Kidowon populations in Cheju island) were studied. In most of the Dendropanax morbifera natural stands, the following tree species appeared predominantly : Camellia japonica, Castanopsis cuspidate var. sieboldii, Castanopsis cuspidate var. thunbergii, Carpinus laxiflora, Quercus acute and Eurya japonica. Especially, Camellia japonica and Eurya japonica appeared in all the stands. Dendropanax morbifera occupied 17.2% of the upper story, 12.9% of the middle story, and 10.3% of the lower story, respectively. The distribution patterns by Morisita`s Index showed that Dendropanax morbifera was distributed randomly in all of the three stories, i.e. the upper, the middle and the lower stories. Dendropanax morbifera was positively associated with Camellia japonica, Eurya japonica, Carpinus laxiflora, Cinnamomum japonicum, Ligustrum japonicum, Callicarpa Japonica. Castanopsis cuspidate var. thunbergii, Castanopsis cuspidata var. sieboldii, Daphniphyllum macropodum, Acer palmatum and Euonymus oxyphyllus. This might suggest that the ecological niche is similar to each other. The cluster analysis using percent dissimilarity(PD) based on species composition divided into two groups. One group consisted of the populations located along the south-western coasts. The other group consisted of the populations of Cheju island. This result was agree with that of ordination analysis. From these results, We could find out that the species composition of the populations of Dendrapanax morbifera in Cheju island was quite different from those of other regions.
