Population ecological characteristics of growth and mortality play an important role in understanding the population dynamics of marine mammals. The instantaneous coefficients of natural and bycatch mortality were estimated for minke whales (Balaenoptera acutorostrata) in Korean waters using a population assessment model composed of bycatch and abundance data. The survivorship curve of this population was fitted to the data, and then the curve was revised using age-specific relative bycatchability coefficients (qt). Instantaneous coefficients of natural and bycatch mortality of minke whales were estimated as 0.024/year and 0.076/year, respectively, and from this the survival rate was estimated as 0.905. This estimated survival rate was comparable to other cetaceans in other regions. The qt for this population ranged from 0.020 to 0.193. The revised survival rates were higher when the qt was taken into account. The mortality coefficient, survival rate, qt and survivorship curves had not previously been determined for minke whale in this area. This estimate could serve as fundamental information to assess the status of this population and for conservation and rational management.

Age, growth and mortality of Mactra chinensis were investigated during the period from October 2012 to September 2013 in Busan, South Korea. The monthly variation of the marginal index (MI) of the shell and chondrophore showed that the ring of this species was formed once a year during July. We estimated the age of M. chinensis by reading the external rings on the shell and the growth bands of the chondrophore to compare growth parameters between the two growth characters. The age of this species ranged from 0 to 8 years (shell-based age reading) and from 0 to 10 years (chondrophore-based age reading). Based on external rings and growth bands of chondrophore for the same period, the von Bertalanffy growth functions were expressed by the equation, L t = 101.53[1− exp {−0.15(t + 0.75)}] and L t = 90.03[1−exp {−0.20(t + 0.50)}], respectively. The likelihood test showed that there was a significant difference in L ∞ (P < 0.001), K (P < 0.001), to (P < 0.001) estimated from non-linear regression between the two growth characters.
Sexual Dimorphism in Morphometric Characteristics of Korean Chub Zacco koreanus (Pisces, Cyprinidae)

We measured a set of 37 morphological characteristics in 97 specimens of adult Korean chub, Zacco koreanus, trapped in the Milyang River, Korea, in May and October of 2005. Twelve out of thirty-seven morphometric measurements were significantly different between the sexes. In particular, both the pectoral fin length and the direct distance between the insertion of the dorsal fin and the insertion of the anal fin were highly significant (p < 0.001). This sexual dimorphism may reflect the outcome of sexual selection in this species.

저가화, 소형화, 지능화되고 있는 RFID 칩은 조달, 국방, 우편, 교육, 문화, 교통 및 환경 등의 다양한 분야에 적용되고 있다. 본 연구는 이러한 RFID를 생명공학의 핵심기술인 PCR 기술을 수행하는 Thermal Cycler에 도입하였다. 이는 사용자가 RFID 리더기를 장착한 Thermal Cycler 장비에 본인의 RFID 태그를 인식시켜 별도의 login을 하지 않고도 실험에 쓰인 protocol에 손쉽게 접근할 수 있도록 한다. 또한 사용자 본인의 RFID 태그를 사용하기 때문에 같은 장비를 사용하는 다른 사용자나 제 3의 인물로부터 실험내용을 보호함으로써 보안성을 높일 수 있다.
