This study aims to search for housing characteristics and socio-economic factors affecting choice of residential improvement project type in urban slum areas and to give implications in residential improvement policy. Four slum areas in Taejon city are selected and classified two groups by improvement project type, named 'upgrading type' and 'multi-family housing type'. Difference in Housing and socio-economic characteristics were analysed between two groups. T-test and determinent analysis technique are executed for this analysing purpose. The results of this study could be summarized as follows : Firstly, some housing and household characteristics are different in given statistical significance level 0.05 between two groups. Secondly, some housing and household characteristics such as 'number of family', 'level of income', 'building years', 'building area', and 'number of rooms' affect choice of improvement project type. So this analytical model could apply to determin the type of residential improvement project to other slum areas.
Since 1989, Residential environment improvement program has been executed to improve the quality of residential environment of low income residents living in urban slum area. But despite of the government's efforts such as relaxation of the building regulation, giving public financial support for the program, not a few people in the squatter did not settle down and left to another slum area in the process of improvement program. In this context, this study aims to search for factors affecting resident's resettlement behavior in the process of residential environment improvement program, and to suggest policy implications to enhance resettlement ratio of low income residents. For this study, household questionnaire survey has been done at five different slum areas in Daejeon. And Pearson's chi-squre test has been done to identify the relationship between socio-economic characteristics and the resettlement behavior.
