The aim of this experiments was to investigate the effects of Chinese magnolia vine water extract on the renal function, plasma renin activity, plasma levels of aldosterone and atrial natriuretic peptide in rats. The results of this study were as follows; 1. Water balance decreased significantly after administration with Chinese magnolia vine extracts (0.2 ml/200 g of body weight). 2. Urine volume increased significantly after administration with Chinese magnolia vine extracts. 3. Urinary excretion of sodium increased significantly after administration with Chinese magnolia vine extracts. 4. Urinary excretion of creatinine increased significantly after administration with Chinese magnolia vine extracts (0.2 ml/200 g of body weight). 5. Plasma levels of atrial natriuretic peptide decreased significantly after administration with Chinese magnolia vine extracts (0.1 ml/200 g of body weight). 6. Plasma levels of aldosterone decreased significantly after administration with Chinese magnolia vine extracts (0.2 ml/200 g of body weight).

Epimedii Herba is an important traditional herb. It was widely used as a tonifying herb. The mechanism of action of this herb on the immune system is not well studied. The experimental groups were divided into nonimmunized group and immunized group with ovalbumine. The levels of immunoglobulin were detected in male ICR mice treated with the aqueous extract of Epimedii Herba (AEEH) at a dosages of 40, 120 and 360 mg/kg(p.o.) for 2 weeks. This study was performed to elucidate the effects of the aqueous extract of Epimedii Herba on the increasing rate of body weight and ratio of spleen weight versus body weight, and production of immunoglobulins, IgG, IgGl, IgG2a and IgM, production of cytokines, IL4 and IFN-γ, in mice. The results were summarized as follows: Epimedii Herba was slightly decreased the ratio of body weigh gain. The ratio of spleen weight versus body weight was significantly increased in 40mg/kg of nonimmunized group and 120mg/kg in immunized group. The level of IgG was significantly increased in 40mg/kg of nonimmunized group and all concentration of immunized group. The level of IgGl was signifcaney increased in 40mg/kg of nonimmunized group and all cocentration of immunized group. The level of IgG2a was significantly increased in all concentration of nonimmunized group and immunized group. The level of IgM was significantly increased in 40mg/kg, 120/mg/kg of nonimmunized group and alto concentration of immunized group. The production of IFN-γ was significantly increased in 40mg/kg, 120/mg/kg of nonimmunized group and all concentration of immunized group. The production of IL-4 was significantly increased in all concentration of nonimmunized group and immunized group. These fndings demonstrate that Epimedii Herba was enhanced production of immunoglobulins and cytokines in nonimmunized group. Especially, Epimedii Herba was more increased the production of various immunoglobulins and cytokines in immunized group with ovalbumin. These results suggest that aqueous extract of Epimedii Herba activate the humoral and cell-mediated immune responses, and protective effects on host against microbial infection and immune disease.
