VP-ellipsis, Stripping, and the Functions of the Delimiter –to in Korean
김소지,조세연 한국언어정보학회 2016 언어와 정보 Vol.20 No.1
VP-ellipsis constructions in English can be schematized as S + [NP finite-AUX __ ] where the underlined part is understood to be a VP. Similarly, the pattern S + NP[-to] can be observed in Korean colloquial contexts. Though the English VP-ellipsis sentence pattern and the Korean pattern superficially seem to be similar, the Korean pattern exhibits peculiar properties: Syntactically, the NP of the pattern should have the delimiter -to. Semantically, it may convey ambiguous readings: VP-ellipsis-like and/or Stripping-like interpretation. To account for the pattern at issue, we propose a base-generated analysis driven by the delimiter -to within a construction grammar. We claim that the mother of the NP[-to] in this pattern is an S whose meaning is ambiguous between a VP-ellipsis-like and a Stripping-like reading. Consequently, the code of the VP-ellipsis in English is finite auxiliary verbs while that of the pattern S + NP[-to] in Korean is the delimiter -to.
Positive Stripping Construction in English and Korean: A Direct Interpretation Approach
김소지,조세연 대한언어학회 2019 언어학 Vol.27 No.2
The positive stripping construction (PSC) in English and Korean is comprised of several fragments (and) NP too/(kuliko) NP[-to] but delivers a full sentential meaning. To account for such a form-meaning mismatch, we examine the similarities and differences in the properties of the PSC between the two languages. Based on the properties we observed, we argue that our Construction-Grammar based analysis under the Direct Interpretation Approach can sufficiently explain the properties of the stripping in the two languages, showing the problems of the Focus Phrase-based analysis under the Movement-and-Ellipsis Approach. Moreover, it is argued that our analysis will lead to a simpler explanation for further stripping data.
영어 긍정 최소 공백화 구문: 직접 해석 접근법을 중심으로
김소지,조세연 대한언어학회 2018 언어학 Vol.26 No.1
The so-called positive Stripping construction in English involves the conjunction and, a single constituent XP, and the adverb too. This construction seems to be an incomplete sentence and nonetheless, delivers a complete sentential meaning. To generate such sentences and provide propositional meanings, we propose a construction-based analysis in a direct interpretation approach, rejecting the previous analyses mainly based on deletion approaches. In so doing, we suggest a positive stripping construction rule, which enables us to provide an explanation on the syntactic structure and the meaning of the construction at issue.

The paper aims to study the peculiar properties of the Contrastive Stripping Construction (CSC) in English and Korean. The key issue in this paper is what lead to a contrastive meaning of the CSC in the two languages. The CSC in English and Korean can be comprised of a few fragments such as (but/and) (not) NP and (Kulena/kuliko) NP[-(n)un] ani- respectively, delivering a contrastive sentential reading. To account for the form-meaning mismatch, we compare the properties of the CSC in both languages at issue. Based on the properties we observed, we propose a construction-based analysis of the CSC in the languages, postulating the English CSC-cx and the Korean CSC-cx. Our analysis provides a simpler explanation for why the CSC of the two languages can have different syntactic properties, delivering similar contrastive propositional readings.
영어 부정 스트리핑 구문의 중의성 해소에 관한 연구: 직접 해석 접근법을 중심으로
김소지 ( Kim So-jee ),조세연 ( Cho Sae-youn ) 경희대학교 비교문화연구소 2018 比較文化硏究 Vol.52 No.-
Negative Stripping Construction in English involves the disjunction but, the adverb not, and a constituent NP. This construction is an incomplete sentence although it delivers a complete sentential meaning. Interpretation of this construction may be ambiguous in that the constituent NP can either be construed as the subject, or as the complements including the object. To generate such sentences and resolve the issue of ambiguity, we propose a construction-based analysis under direct interpretation approach, rejecting previous analyses based on deletion approaches. In so doing, we suggest a negative stripping construction rule that can account for ambiguous meaning. This rule further can enable us to explain syntactic structures and readings of Negative Stripping Construction.

English prepositions are among the most difficult grammar components for Korean learners of English. Previous studies have tended to focus on types of prepositional errors, based on the semantic point of view. However, since the preposition in English has binary values as to its PRD features: predicative (PRD+) or non-predicative (PRD-), the syntactic properties of English prepositions differ by their binary values. To examine the different phonetic realizations in English prepositions, this study conducted a production experiment. We found that when the native English speakers uttered the prepositions, they produced different pitch values even for the same preposition, depending on the binary values. In contrast, since Korean speakers did not always recognize the difference between the binary values with respect to prepositions, different phonetic patterns were observed, depending on whether or not they had undergone proper education training. A control group with no education training presented phonetic realizations that differed from those of native speakers. However, a test group with training showed phonetic patterns similar to the native speakers’ patterns. The results of the experiment suggest that the teaching of prepositions according to the binary values is required in English education.
