The EPS system is superior to conventional hydraulic power steering system in the aspect of fuel economy,
environment and assembly convenience but the increase of friction and inertia may cause unnatural steering feeling
especially in on-center range. Therefore, EPS has its own special control logic to compensate it.
In this paper, the study for an objective evaluation method with steering angle, steering torque, lateral acceleration
and yaw rate was addressed to quantify on-center handling of EPS system. Based on this method, the control factors
that affect on-center handling performance was analyzed and test results show that on-center handling can be
improved with adequate returnability control, damping compensation and inertia compensation.

Good road feel means that the driver can interpret road conditions through the steering wheel. This is one of the most important requirements demanded by car makers. However, over-sensitivity in steering transmission could cause inconvenience to the driver especially maneuvering on rough road and hence must be isolated by the steering system or by other means. Driver has better steering feel if steering system can distinguish diverse road conditions and apply appropriate control strategy. In this paper we’ve proposed two control strategies to enhance steering performance especially on rough roads. The first method analyzes motor position signal of Electric Power Steering (or EPS) which the road roughness can be separated from the motor position signal using signal processing .Then the roughness is compensated to obtain better steering feel. The second method utilizes CAN transferred vehicle information from Continuous Damping Control system (or CDC). CDC sets damping force in accordance with driving condition and road roughness. The roughness of the road can be detected using vertical acceleration sensors located at each front wheel. The shift control algorithm method shows better performance especially on rough road. These two methods were compared on rough road conditions with conventional steering system to show the enhanced steering performance.

The EPS(Electric Power Steering) system is superior to conventional hydraulic power steering system in the aspect of fuel economy, environmental preservation and assembly convenience and it is foundation for intelligent vehicle such as electric vehicle, active steering and steer by wire.
In this paper, development of EPS control logic with HILS (Hardware In the Loop Simulation) is introduced. EPS and EPS ECU(Electronic Control Unit) work as real hardware and the other parts of vehicle are simulated as mathematical model. HILS oilers circumstances for efficient development of control logic and reliability of EPS. Simulating dangerous test as substitute for vehicle test, diagnosis and fail-safety function can be 0firmed up and the cause of error can be searched definitely owing to revivability of test. In addition, various tests can be taken efficiently with test automation.
