From Soap-like Small Molecules to Stable Nanofiber Threads
Dae-Yoon Kim(김대윤) 한국고분자학회 2021 한국고분자학회 학술대회 연구논문 초록집 Vol.46 No.1
Self-assembly of small molecule with precisely defined chemistry is an established route to produce high-surface-area nanostructures. However, these nanostructures are prone to dissociation upon drying. Here, we have developed a new material made out of supramolecularly organized amphiphiles that can retain their nanostructures in a water-free environment. The amphiphilic small molecules are consisted with three repetitions of the Kevlar monomeric unit; hydrophilic head of anionic, cationic, zwitterionic group; and hydrophobic end of bulky aliphatic moiety. When placed in water, the molecules start to form long bilayer nanoribbons. In one direction, the chains are connected via intermolecular hydrogen bonding. In the perperdicular direction, the molecules are cling together through the pi-pi stacking. A macroscopic thread fabricated by fiber drawing process remained stable and sturdy even when dried. Currently, there are numerous ways of approaching cerebellopontine masses. Operators aiming to remove these masses should choose a method considering the size and the position of the masses. Historically, in select of normal hearing patient, surgical approaches sacrificing the patient’s hearing was avoided. However nowadays, safe plugging of semicircular canals is feasible and partial labyrinthectomy is successfully done preserving patient s hearing at the same time. So called transcrusal approach is not widely used so far, moreover on our acknowledgement there was no case reported removing cerebellopontine angle mass through this method in Korea yet. We report a case of 28 year old male patient with cerebellopontine angle caverneous malformation, removed by transcrusal approach while preserving the patient s hearing and having no further complications.

Carbon nanotube fibers (CNTFs) have attracted wide attention owing to their exceptional lightness, electrical conductivity, and mechanical flexibility that make them potential components for applications including carbon composites, nanoelectronics, and optics. CNTFs have been successfully fabricated from carbon nanotubes (CNTs) by liquid-crystal spinning. This spinning method requires low-defect CNTs to form a liquid crystalline phase for making highly-oriented CNTFs. In this study, we conducted microwave purification to effectively remove impurities from CNTs, such as residual metallic catalyst and carbon-based impurities, that are formed during CNT synthesis. We fabricated single-walled carbon nanotube fibers (SWCNTFs) using liquid-crystal spinning purified single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) to examine the effect of SWCNTs on the liquid crystal phase and resultant fibers. In conclusion, this method removed impurities from SWCNTs and increased the oxygen-containing functional groups in the SWCNTs, which are capable of forming a liquid crystal phase, thereby enhancing the mechanical performance of fibers.
