Attachments of an excavator experience cyclic loads which vary quite a lot depending on the working conditions. Field measurement enables to take the variations in loads into account. In this study, loads on the excavator attachments and strains at specific locations have been measured for a sufficiently long period and investigated in order to obtain damage equivalent strains at each location. Then, one representative scenario of motion has been selected which gives almost the same stains as the long-term damage equivalent stains. Availability of the representative motion scenario was confirmed by comparing the stains with those from FMBD analysis. Finally, much more reliable fatigue analysis and optimization could be performed based on the representative motion scenario.

Several types of durability tests are being performed to satisfy the reliabilities of hydraulic components of an excavator. Therefore, it is essential to design durability tests considering working conditions. Because it is not easy to predict the varying loads of excavator components, a design of durability test shall be performed using the results of field measurements. However, it is quite difficult to measure the loads of hydraulic components because the driving parts rotate and are covered by housing. In this study, load measurement system has been developed to measure the transmitted loads, directly. The developed system has been installed on excavator and the transmitted torque, pressures and angular velocity of reduction gear were measured. Using the results of measurement, the design of durability test has been performed.

Torsional vibration analysis is necessary at design stage to ensure the reliability of a system particularly when the driven machine is a reciprocating compressor. This paper contains the results of torsional vibration analysis and fatigue strength evaluation for 540 ㎾ compressor driving motor. Torsional vibration analysis showed that the 2nd torsional mode of the entire shaft system has the possibility of resonance with the 14th order excitation of compressor and twin line frequency of motor at operating speed. Therefore, the analyses were required to ensure the structural reliability of the motor. The fatigue strength was evaluated for the shaft and inner fans using the results of forced vibration analysis. It is concluded that the motor has sufficient fatigue strength under normal operating condition.
