An experiment has been made to determine what, if any, correlation there is bettween the intake of much red-pepper and the high incidence of diseases of the digestive system among Koreans. Experimental materials and methods In this experiment, 15 rabbits with average body weight of two kg. were chosen, and they were divided into three groups (A. B. and C.) Group A was used as control; while each rabbit of group B was fed with 0.5g. of red-pepper per kg. of body weight every day, and the C group was fed with 59. of red-pepper. In addition the 15 rabbits each were fed daily 200g of bean curd refuse and 509 of vegetables. The experiment was continued for 298 days from Feb. 1 to Nov. 25 1957. During the period of time weighing of the rabbits, urine examination, blood examination. the liver function test, and other associated tests were performed twice a month in order to observe the various changes which might occur. Then at the end of the experimental period all of the rabbits were dissected for a pathological. histological examination. Results The results of the experiment were summarized as follows. Summary 1) In Group B an increase of the body-weight :Aras observed; while the urine -findings, blood picture, liverfunctions, and pathological- histological- findings remained normal. 2) In Group C a decrease of the body-weight possitive urine albumin test, decrease of both white and red blood cells, and decrease of liver function were observed. 2) In the pathological-histological study it was possible to observe in Group C degenerative change of liver parenchyma and of kidney tubules, hypertrophy of gastric mucosa, interstitial myocardids, thickening of lung capillary walls, and lung congestion.

Isolation of Xenopus FGF-8b and Comparison with FGF-8a

The Xenopus FGF-8a and FGF-8b isoforms have been reported to be neural crest and neuronal inducers, respectively. However, cloning of Xenopus FGF-8b (XFGF-8b) has not been reported previously and the two isoforms do not seem to have been clearly distinguished in Xenopus experiments. Here, we describe the cloning and expression of XFGF-8b and compare the effects of the two isoforms. XFGF-8b has an 11 amino acid insert in its N-terminal region compared with XFGF-8a. Both isoforms are expressed in the anterior neural regions of the early embryo, and in the apical ectodermal ridge of limb buds and tips of growing digits in the larval stages. However, XFGF-8b is more abundant than XFGF-8a throughout early development. The two isoforms are also regulated in similar fashion by retinoic acid in early development. However, although both XFGF-8a and XFGF-8b induce ectopic neurogenesis, only XFGF-8a appears to be involved in neural crest induction.

Evidence indicates that Helicobacter pylori is the causative agent of chronic gastritis and perhaps gastric malignancy. Extracellular vesicles (EVs) play an important role in the evolutional process of malignancy due to their genetic material cargo. We aimed to evaluate the clinical significance and biological mechanism of H. pylori EVs on the pathogenesis of gastric malignancy. We performed 16S rDNA-based metagenomic analysis of gastric juices either from endoscopic or surgical patients. From each sample of gastric juices, the bacteria and EVs were isolated. We evaluated the role of H. pylori EVs on the development of gastric inflammation in vitro and in vivo. IVIS spectrum and confocal microscopy were used to examine the distribution of EVs. The metagenomic analyses of the bacteria and EVs showed that Helicobacter and Streptococcus are the two major bacterial genera, and they were significantly increased in abundance in gastric cancer (GC) patients. H. pylori EVs are spherical and contain CagA and VacA. They can induce the production of tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukin (IL)-6 and IL-1β by macrophages, and IL-8 by gastric epithelial cells. Also, EVs induce the expression of interferon gamma, IL-17 and EV-specific immunoglobulin Gs in vivo in mice. EVs were shown to infiltrate and remain in the mouse stomach for an extended time. H. pylori EVs, which are abundant in the gastric juices of GC patients, can induce inflammation and possibly cancer in the stomach, mainly via the production of inflammatory mediators from gastric epithelial cells after selective uptake by the cells.
