Nasal Assimilation and/h/- Deletion in English : in defence of the concept 'ambisyllabicity'
강석근 한국현대언어학회 1996 언어연구 Vol.12 No.1
This paper aims at presenting some evidence from English that the notion of ambisyllabicity capturing the shared feature of a consonant has a real intuitive appeal. Considering the stress-conditioned nasal assimilation and /h/-deletion in English, I show that these phenomena can be given a better account by invoking the notion of ambisyllabicity. Firstly, I claim that the stress-conditioned nasal assimilation occur only when /n/ and the following velar become tautosyllabic as a result of ambisyllabification. Secondly, I assert that nonappearance of syllable-final /h/ be due to a constraint which bans the syllabification of /h/ into a coda position, and that not syllable-initial but only ambisyllabic /h/ delete. Finally, I consider how these phenomena can be handled in the framework of optimality theory recently proposed by Prince and Smolensky (1993).
Segment Deletion and Blocking Triggered by Suffixation in English: An Optimality Theoretic Approach

Kang, Seok-keun & Gao, Ying Ying. 2017. Segment Deletion and Blocking Triggered by Suffixation in English: An Optimality Theoretic Approach. Korean Journal of Linguistics, 42-2, 121-134. This paper discusses segment deletion and blocking effects triggered by suffixation in English from the perspective of Optimality Theory. First, considering both stem-final rime deletion and blocking of suffixation, we argue that the two seemingly different phenomena can be given a unified account by using the Obligatory Contour Principle (OCP). That is, when suffixation creates a string of syllables with identical onsets, stem-final rime is deleted in conformity with the constraint. We also show that suffixation is blocked where the resulting form violates the OCP. Finally, addressing stem-final vowel deletion induced by vowel-initial suffixes, we claim that the vowel deletion applies as a repair strategy to avoid violation of the markedness constraint No Vowel Hiatus, which rules out two adjacent vowels across a syllable boundary. Kang, Seok-keun & Yang Seon-Ki. 2017. A Diachronic Approach to the Directionality of Conversion in English. Korean Journal of Linguistics, 42-4, 619-637. This paper addresses conversion in English from a diachronic perspective. Specifically, reviewing the relevant word pairs considered in previous studies, including Marchand (1969), Adams (1973), Kiparsky (1982) and Myers (1984), we first argue that historical criteria based on dates of appearance of words clearly indicate that the directionality of conversion proposed by previous studies is problematic as contradictory or opposite directions for a significant number of cases are found. Our research results also show that 22.53% of the word pairs were not generated by conversion, but they were independently borrowed from French, Latin or Italian. Finally, we assert that unlike Kiparsky's (1982) assertion, stress shift cannot be a decisive factor for the directionality of conversion. (Wonkwang University & Sunchon National University)

This paper studies the distributional patterns of the English regular plural suffix and possessive clitic in the light of Realization Optimality Theory. Considering the realization of the plural suffix, on the one hand, I claim that the constraint ranking ALIGN-PLURAL-HEAD⟫ALIGN-PLURAL- NOUNPHRASE ensures that if there is a head noun, the plural suffix attaches to it; otherwise, it appears after the entire noun phrase. On the other hand, the possessive clitic always attaches to the last word of the possessive noun phrase due to the unviolated constraint ALIGN-POSS- NPPOSS. In addition, I also show that the coalescence of the regular plural suffix and the possessive clitic can be accounted for straightforwardly by ranking *FEATURE COALESCENCE lower than the relevant alignment constraints. Finally, I assert that the scope constraint governing affix order should be defined negatively rather than positively.

This paper is the analysis of 'Yongdam-gugok-ga(龍潭九曲歌)' of Choi-ok. 'Yongdam-gugok-ga(龍潭九曲歌)' is a serise of poetry that is included in the genre of 'Gu-gok-ga(九曲歌)'. This poem is consist of 'Jang-dan-gu(長短句)'. When Choi-ok forgave 'gwageo' and bulit 'Yongdam-seosa(龍潭書社)', he sang about 9 point of 'Yongdam valley' in this poem. This poem is estimated to be a practice piece of 'Yongdam-yisibpal-young(龍潭二十六詠)', but this poem is significant in itself. This poem is blended with a concept of 'Pal-gyung-si' and 'Gu-gok-ga'. Choi-ok managed his own garden in the valley and remake this garden as aesthetic and personal space. Also there are only few 'Gu-gok-ga' poetry that sang about Gyeong-ju, so this poetry have a regional responsibility. This poem describes the value of 'Yongdam-gugok' characteristically. However, 'Yongdam-gugok-ga' has structural and literal weakness. In spite of this limitation, 'Yongdam-gugok-ga' has literary meaning because it has a view of world and garden management of Choi-Ok.
