High temperature superconductor films and devices for the microwave communication industry
N. J. Long,J. Joubert,T. Kemmitt,L. J. Campbell,A. J. Bubendorfer 한국물리학회 2004 Current Applied Physics Vol.4 No.2-4
High temperature superconductor (HTS) thin lms can be used to construct microwave devices such as lters and antennas withsuperior performance. We show how the lms can be manufactured using a solgel method which has the advantage of being able toproduce large area lms quickly, at low cost on simple equipment. We have developed a solgel precursor which has the additionalbenets of using commonly available non-toxic reagents, and which can be prepared quickly. HighTc and high Jc lms have beenmade with this precursor. These lms can be patterned to make microwave lters with better sensitivity and selectivity than con-ventional lters. Adesignfora microstriplayout ofaquasi-elliptic bandpass filter which can be implemented ona10 m×10mm film is described. Simulated results comparing lter implementations with metal and superconductor films operating at 77 K are given.
ELECTRONIC PROPERTIES OF THIN FILMS SUBLIMED FROM La@C82 AND Li@C60

La@C82 and Li@C60 thin films obtained by sublimation in vacuum are studied using four-probe current–voltage measurements and atomic force microscopy. In situ electrical measurements show semiconducting behavior of both films with room-temperature resistivity of 21±8 and 1230±50Ω· cm for the La@C82 and Li@C60, respectively. A variable range hopping mechanism of conductance is suggested from the temperature dependences of resistance. The activation energies for electron transport are calculated for both metallofullerenes. Irreversible changes to the Li@C60 film structure increasing the film resistivity to values typical for C60 are found at elevated temperatures. The effect of exposure to ambient atmosphere on the conductance of the films is discussed.

Objective: Although evidence implicates striatal cholinergic impairment as a mechanism underlying tardive dyskinesia, trials of nonspecific cholinergic agents have been inconclusive. As a partial agonist at specific nicotinic receptor sub-types, varenicline reduces drug-induced dyskinesias in animal models suggesting promise as a treatment for tardive dyskinesia. Methods: Three schizophrenia patients with tardive dyskinesia who were smokers underwent an open trial of varenicline. After a 2-week baseline, subjects received varenicline 1 mg twice daily. Changes from baseline on the Abnormal Involuntary Movement Scale were measured after a 4-week varenicline stabilization period, and 6 weeks after the smoking quit date in one patient. Results: Varenicline had no effect on mean Abnormal Involuntary Movement Scale scores after 4 weeks. Although smok-ing decreased after 4 weeks on varenicline and diminished further in one patient after 10 weeks, this also appeared to have no effect on ratings of tardive dyskinesia. Conclusion: In contrast to animal models, no significant change in tardive dyskinesia occurred in response to varenicline replacement in three schizophrenia patients. Further investigations of cholinergic mechanisms in tardive dyskinesia are worthwhile as agents for specific cholinergic targets become available for treatment. In addition, treatment trials of tardive dyskinesia should control for smoking status, while patients on antipsychotics receiving nicotine replacement therapies for smoking should be studied further for changes in movement.

We describe a case of recurrent, life-threatening, catatonic stupor, without evidence of any associated medical, toxic or mental disorder. This case provides support for the inclusion of a separate category of “unspecified catatonia” in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders 5th edition (DSM-5) to be used to classify idiopathic cases, which appears to be consistent with Kahlbaum’s concept of catatonia as a distinct disease state. But beyond the limited, cross-sectional, syndromal approach adopted in DSM-5, this case more importantly illustrates the prognostic and therapeutic significance of the longitudinal course of illness in differentiating cases of catatonia, which is better defined in the Wernicke-Kleist-Leonhard classification system. The importance of differentiating cases of catatonia is further supported by the efficacy of antipsychotics in treatment of this case, contrary to conventional guidelines.
Optical properties of endohedral Li@C60
A. Gromov,N. Krawez,A. Lassesson,D. I. Ostrovskii,E. E. B. Campbell 한국물리학회 2002 Current Applied Physics Vol.2 No.1
UV-VIS, IR and Raman investigations have been carried out on puried Li@C60 produced by low energy ion implantation ofC60. Two endohedral fractions can be isolated that have very dierent optical properties and stabilities. Here we show that the rstendohedral fraction is a dimer species and the second fraction is the monomer. The IR spectra of sublimed monomer lms show aprominent peak at around 1.1l m corresponding to the rst electronic transition of the C.60 anion. Raman spectra show the vib-rationalrotational movement of the Li inside the carbon cage.. 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
IMPROVING AUTOMATED ALIGNMENT IN MULTILINGUAL CORPORA
( J. A. Campbell ),( N. Chatterjee ),( Alex Chengyu Fang ),( M. Manela ) 한국언어정보학회 1996 국제 워크샵 Vol.1996 No.-
We report on methods of improving multilingual text alignments that have been produced in a simple dynamic-programming scheme, by automated detec-tion of possible misalignments. Details of methods involving cognates. specially-identified words, and propositional contents of sentences are given, together with notable features of their performance on parallel corpora in a number of different types of European languages.
Direct observation of a two-dimensional hole gas at oxide interfaces

The discovery of a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) at the LaAlO3/SrTiO3 interface(1) has resulted in the observation of many properties(2-5) not present in conventional semiconductor heterostructures, and so become a focal point for device applications(6-8). Its counterpart, the two-dimensional hole gas (2DHG), is expected to complement the 2DEG. However, although the 2DEG has been widely observed(9), the 2DHG has proved elusive. Herein we demonstrate a highly mobile 2DHG in epitaxially grown SrTiO3/LaAlO3/SrTiO3 heterostructures. Using electrical transport measurements and in-line electron holography, we provide direct evidence of a 2DHG that coexists with a 2DEG at complementary heterointerfaces in the same structure. First-principles calculations, coherent Bragg rod analysis and depth-resolved cathodoluminescence spectroscopy consistently support our finding that to eliminate ionic point defects is key to realizing a 2DHG. The coexistence of a 2DEG and a 2DHG in a single oxide heterostructure provides a platform for the exciting physics of confined electron-hole systems and for developing applications.
