        Curcumin supplementation attenuates the decrease in endothelial function following eccentric exercise

        [Purpose] Eccentric exercise induces a decrease in vascular endothelial function. Curcumin, a major component of turmeric, has potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that are associated with vascular protective effects. The present study examined the effect of acute supplementation of curcumin on eccentric exercise-induced endothelial dysfunction in healthy young men. [Methods] Fourteen healthy sedentary young men (range, 21–29 years) were assigned to either the curcumin (n = 6) or placebo (n = 8) group. All subjects consumed either curcumin or placebo before exercise, and eccentric exercise of the elbow flexors was performed with their nondominant arm. Before and 60 min after exercise, brachial artery flow-mediated dilation (FMD), as an indicator of endothelial function, was measured in the non-exercised arm. [Results] Brachial artery FMD significantly decreased following eccentric exercise (p < 0.05) in the placebo group, but acute supplementation with curcumin before exercise nullified this change. The change in FMD before and after eccentric exercise between the placebo and curcumin groups was significantly different (p < 0.05). [Conclusion] The present study found that acute curcumin supplementation could attenuate the decrease in endothelial function, as measured by FMD, following eccentric exercise in healthy young men.

        Clinical associations of Trousseau's syndrome associated with cerebral infarction and ovarian cancer

        Objective: Since there have been few large series studies to date, we investigated the relationship between Trousseau's syndrome associated with cerebral infarction and its clinical associations with ovarian cancer. Methods: In this study, we investigated the association between cerebral infarction onset and ovarian cancer. Eight-hundred twenty-seven consecutive ovarian cancer patients from 4 affiliated academic institutions were included in the study over a 12 years period. All patients were histopathologically diagnosed as epithelial ovarian cancer and were analyzed retrospectively. Results: The 27 patients (3.2%) presented with cerebral infarction during the study period, 14 patients onset prior to treatment (1.7%), and 13 patients onset after start of initial treatment (1.5%). Univariate analysis and multivariate analysis was performed for onset of Trousseau's syndrome and various clinical and pathological parameters. There was no statistical significance between the occurrence of Trousseau's syndrome with age or International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) stage; however, univariate analysis and multivariate analysis demonstrated a statistically significant association between clear cell carcinoma (CCC) and non-CCC histology. Conclusion: Thus, our results demonstrate that Trousseau's syndrome with cerebral infarction occurred with greater incidence among CCC cases compared to non-CCC cases.

        Orignal Paper : High circulating Levels of oxidized LDL in strength-trained athletes

        Oxidized low-density lipoprotein (oxLDL) has been shown to play a major role in the progression of atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease. Aerobic exercise training has been reported to decrease plasma oxLDL levels. However, until now, there have been no studies regarding the effect of strength exercise training on plasma oxLDL levels. The purpose of this study was to investigate the plasma oxLDL. concentration and antioxidant capacity of plasma in strength-trained athletes. We specifically assessed the total scavenging activity against plasma hydroxyl radical (HO,) and alkoxyl radical (RO,) by using the electron spin resonance (ESR) technique, as both radicals are involved in oxLDL production. The subjects included young strength-trained athletes (SA group; shot put, hammer, javelin throwers, or power lifters; n=9) and sedentary individuals (control group; n=9). We measured plasma oxLDL concentrations and total scavenging activity against HO, and RO. Maximal muscle strength, as assessed by isokinetic tests of the knee and elbow joints and maximal handgrip strength, was significantly greater in the SA group than in the control group. Plasma oxl.DL concentrations were found to be significantly higher in the SA group than in the control group. The total scavenging activity of plasma against HO, and RO. did not differ between the two groups. These results suggest that high-intensity strength training increases plasma oxLDL concentration without upregulating the total scavenging activity against plasma HO, and RO.
