Determinants of Foreign Direct Investment in Jiangsu Province, China

2021 Journal of Global and Area Studies(JGA) Vol.5 No.2

China has turned to be one of the world’s most significant foreign direct investment (FDI) recipients, with FDI stock second only to the United States. Even though total FDI in China is substantially large, the spatial distribution of FDI is extremely uneven. The eastern coastal regions have always been important areas of China to receive FDI. Among the eastern coastal areas, Jiangsu province is consistently ranked second behind Guangdong province in terms of total FDI in China. However, FDI inflows of Jiangsu province surpassed Guangdong province for the first time in 2003. Although Jiangsu province has become a remarkable destination of FDI, the current FDI growth rate has started reducing. Therefore, it is crucial to investigate the determinants of FDI in Jiangsu province. Consequently, this study examines the determinants of FDI in Jiangsu province by employing an autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) model with annual data during 1985-2019. In addition, we apply the Toda-Yamamoto Granger causality test to increase the robustness of our empirical results. The findings show that FDI in Jiangsu province is determined by average wage, education, and per capita GDP. Consequently, Jiangsu authorities should implement a policy to ensure a low wage rate and promote education in order to attract more FDI. In addition, the policy on economic development is needed to promote inward FDI in Jiangsu.

The Role of Foreign Direct Investment on Ecological Footprint of the ASEAN-5 Nations

Vol.32 No.3

This study investigates the effect of foreign direct investment (FDI) on ecological footprint in 5 ASEAN countries: Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand. We implement the autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) model to acquire the outcomes of short-run and long-run coefficients using annual data during 1980 to 2018. Furthermore, Toda-Yamamoto Granger causality test is employed to assure the robustness of our study. The empirical findings reveal that positive effects of FDI on ecological footprint are detected in Indonesia and Malaysia, while Thailand has negative connection between FDI and the ecological footprint. However, there is no significant impact of FDI on ecological footprint in the Philippines and Singapore. In addition, the results from control variables indicate that GDP per capita shows positive impact on ecological footprint in Indonesia, whereas, it has a negative effect in Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand. The exports have no impact on ecological footprint in all 5 ASEAN countries. Nonetheless, energy consumption exhibit positive association with ecological footprint for all 5 ASEAN members.

Impact of Foreign Direct Investment on Renewable Energy Consumption in ASEAN Countries

Vol.32 No.1

The climate change raises the global concern on utilizing of eco-friendly energy, the renewable energy. The current evidences indicate that consumption of renewable energy in the ASEAN countries is low. Consequently, this article scrutinizes the factors affecting renewable energy consumption in the ASEAN 5 countries by focusing the roles of foreign direct investment (FDI). The autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) model is employed, using the data from 1990 to 2019. In addition, to increase the robustness of our work, the Toda-Yamamoto Granger causality test is performed. The empirical findings show that there are positive associations between FDI and renewable energy consumption in Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Singapore. Moreover, GDP per capita positively contributes to renewable energy consumption in Malaysia, but the negative effect is found in Indonesia and Thailand. While the positive impact of export is observed in Malaysia and Thailand, it shows negative one in Singapore. Lastly, financial development has negative relationship with renewable energy consumption in Malaysia and the Philippines.

Vol.25 No.3

Since the end of 1970s, China has implemented opening up and economic reform policies. China has become a significant destination of inward foreign direct investment (FDI) from various countries. Guangdong province has taken a leading role on such policy implementation. Consequently, it turned to be the largest recipient of FDI among 31 provinces and municipalities of Chinese mainland. Most of the existing works investigate the determinants of inward FDI of China at a country level. The province-level research is scarce. Furthermore, the current evidences indicate that although the total FDI inflows of Guangdong have increased over time, its FDI share has decreased remarkably since 2003. Hence, it is very crucial to examine the determinants of FDI inflows of Guangdong province. As a result, our research scrutinizes the factors affecting inward FDI in the case of Guangdong province by using autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) model with annual data from 1990 to 2019. Additionally, we employ the Toda-Yamamoto Granger causality test to increase the robustness of our empirical results. The findings suggest that inward FDI of Guangdong province is determined by average wage, per capita GDP, infrastructure and real effective exchange rate. Trade openness is insignificant. These empirical findings are also supported by the Toda-Yamamoto Granger causality test.
