Introduction: Psychiatric comorbidity is common in patients with functional dyspepsia (FD) but a good screening tool for psychiatric disorders in gastrointestinal clinical practice is Lacking. Aims: 1) Evaluate the performance and optimal cut-off of 12-item General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-12) as a screening tool for psychiatric disorders in FD patients; 2) Compare health-related quality of Life (HRQoL) in FD patients with and without psychiatric comorbidities. Methods: Consecutive patients fulfilling Rome III criteria for FD without medical co-morbidities and gastroesophageal reflux disease were recruited in a gastroenterology clinic. The followings were conducted at 4 weeks after index oesophagogastroduodenoscopy: self-administrated questionnaires on socio-demographics, dyspeptic symptom severity (4-point Likert scale), GHQ-12, and 36-item short-form health survey (SF-36). Psychiatric disorders were diagnosed with Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV Axis I Disorders (SCID) by a trained psychiatrist, which served as reference standard. Results: 55 patients underwent psychiatrist-conducted interview and questionnaire assessment. 27 (49.1%) had current psychiatric disorders as determined by SCID (anxiety disorders: 38.2%, depressive disorders: 16.4%). Receiver operating characteristic curve analysis of GHQ-12 revealed an area under curve of 0.825 (95%CI: 0.698-0.914). Cut-off of GHQ-12 at 3 gave a sensitivity of 63.0% (95%CI = 42.4-80.6%) and specificity of 92.9% (95%CI = 76.5%-98.9%). Subjects with co-existing psychiatric disorders scored significantly Lower in multiple domains of SF-36 (mental component summary, general health, vitality and mental health). By multivariate Linear regression analysis, current psychiatric morbidities (Beta = -0.396, p = 0.002) and family history of psychiatric illness (Beta = -0.299, p = 0.015) were independent risk factors for poorer mental component summary in SF-36, while dyspepsia severity was the only independent risk factor for poorer physical component summary (Beta = -0.332, p = 0.027). Conclusions: Concomitant psychiatric disorders adversely affect HRQoL in FD patients. The use of GHQ-12 as a reliable screening tool for psychiatric disorders allows early intervention and may improve clinical outcomes of these patients.(J Neurogastroenterol Motil 2010;16:52-60)

The effect of the hot-compaction temperature on the microstructure and magnetic properties of anisotropic nanocrystalline magnets was investigated. The hot-compaction temperature was found to impact both the magnetic properties and the microstructure of die-upset magnets. The remanence of the isotropic precursor increases slightly with the improved hot-compaction temperature, and the grains start to grow on the flake boundary at higher hot-compaction temperatures. After hot deformation, it was found that the change in the magnetic properties was the inverse of that observed with the hot-compaction temperature. Microstructural investigation showed that die-upset magnets inherit the microstructural characteristics of their precursor. For the die-upset magnets, hot pressed at low temperature, scarcely any abnormal grain growth on the flake boundary can be seen. For those hot pressed at higher temperatures, however, layers with large equiaxed grains could be observed, which accounted for the poor alignment during the hot deformation, and thus the poor magnetic properties.
Research Articles : Optimal Culture Conditions for Mycelial Growth of Lignosus rhinocerus
( W. H. Lai ),( M. J. Siti Murni ),( D. Fauzi ),( O. Abas Mazni ),( N. M. Saleh ) 한국균학회 2011 Mycobiology Vol.39 No.2
Lignosus rhinocerus is a macrofungus that belongs to Polyporaceae and is native to tropical regions. This highly priced mushroom has been used as folk medicine to treat diseases by indigenous people. As a preliminary study to develop a culture method for edible mushrooms, the cultural characteristics of L. rhinocerus were investigated in a range of culture media under different environmental conditions. Mycelial growth of this mushroom was compared on culture media composed of various carbon and nitrogen sources in addition to C/N ratios. The optimal conditions for mycelial growth were 30˚C at pH 6 and 7. Rapid mycelial growth of L. rhinocerus was observed on glucose-peptone and yeast extract peptone dextrose media. Carbon and nitrogen sources promoting mycelial growth of L. rhinocerus were glucose and potassium nitrate, respectively. The optimum C/N ratio was approximately 10:1 using 2% glucose supplemented as a carbon source in the basal media.

We review the recent SAXS activity on the 1.5-GeV electron storage ring at the National Synchrotron Radiation Research Center (NSRRC). Typical measurements featuring in grazing incident SAXS for soft materials are illustrated. Complex measurements using simultaneous SAXS/DSC and SAXSIWAXS for the correlations between the crystallization and mesoscale ordering in a polymer blend and a polypeptide-block-polypseudorotaxane diblock copolymer are presented. We also introduce a dedicated SAXS beamline which is planned at NSRRC.
Structural Basis of the PNRC2-Mediated Link between mRNA Surveillance and Decapping
Lai, T.,Cho, H.,Liu, Z.,Bowler, Matthew W.,Piao, S.,Parker, R.,Kim, Y.,Song, H. Current Biology 2012 Structure Vol.20 No.12
Nonsense-mediated mRNA decay (NMD) is an important mRNA surveillance system, and human PNRC2 protein mediates the link between mRNA surveillance and decapping. However, the mechanism by which PNRC2 interacts with the mRNA surveillance machinery and stimulates NMD is unknown. Here, we present the crystal structure of Dcp1a in complex with PNRC2. The proline-rich region of PNRC2 is bound to the EVH1 domain of Dcp1a, while its NR-box mediates the interaction with the hyperphosphorylated Upf1. The mode of PNRC2 interaction with Dcp1a is distinct from those observed in other EVH1/proline-rich ligands interactions. Disruption of the interaction of PNRC2 with Dcp1a abolishes its P-body localization and ability to promote mRNA degradation when tethered to mRNAs. PNRC2 acts in synergy with Dcp1a to stimulate the decapping activity of Dcp2 by bridging the interaction between Dcp1a and Dcp2, suggesting that PNRC2 is a decapping coactivator in addition to its adaptor role in NMD.
