Side-out Success in Relation to Setter`s Position on Court in Women`s College Volleyball

        ( Palao,J. M. ),( Ahrabi Fard,I. ) 한국스포츠정책과학원(구 한국스포츠개발원) 2011 International Journal of Applied Sports Sciences Vol.23 No.1

The setter`s position on the court affects the attack and block capacity of the team. The purpose of this study was to assess the ways women`s college teams construct their side-out in order to balance the rotations when the setter is in front and in back. A total of 2435 rallies from 48 sets of the Missouri Valley Conference of the United States Division I college volleyball league was analyzed. A descriptive observational study was done. The variables studied were: side-out phase, efficacy of the phase, set result, setter`s position on the court (in front or in back), attack tempo, spike zone, type of set, and attack efficacy. The results show that: a) women`s college teams won the set when they achieved balance between rotations when the setter was in front and those when the setter was in back; b) the setter`s position did not clearly affect the tendencies of attack type and side-out success, except for the efficacy of high-attacks and out of system attacks when the setter was in front for teams that won the set, and for the use of second-contact attack (low level of occurrence); c) the use of outside hitters adjacent to the setter and the use of slide attacks are the means used by college women`s teams to compensate the imbalance between rotations when the setter was in back versus those when the setter was in front; d) the back court attack is not used at the college women`s level as a way to compensate the imbalance of front spikers when the setter is in front; and e) the use of the jump set at this level was 33%, and it was used more often when the setter was in front.

A case study of applying collective technical-tactical performance goals in elite men`s volleyball team

        ( Palao J. M. ),( Garcia-de-alcaraz A. ),( Hernandez-hernandez E. ),( Ortega E. ) 한국스포츠정책과학원(구 한국스포츠개발원) 2016 International Journal of Applied Sports Sciences Vol.28 No.2

The purpose of this study was to test a protocol for establishing collective technical and tactical performance goals in elite men`s volleyball. The participants were a professional volleyball team. The period of study was one entire season. A baseline was established in the first half of the season, and the intervention was carried out in the second half of the season. The intervention involved the use of seven collective performance goals for monitoring the team in competitions. The variables studied were: the achievement of the collective performance goals that were established; the game phase; the result of the set; and the players`, coaches`, and psychologist`s perception of the use of the performance goals and the poster. The team slightly increased the number of goals achieved per game in the intervention period. There was a significant reduction in serve errors and a significant increase in block contacts. The intervention increased the players` engagement with the team, although there were differences in opinion about the effect on the different players. The intervention improved the players` understanding of the match. The effects of the goal-setting and the poster were positively perceived, due to helping the players to understand their needs and the aspects to improve.

Effect of Serve Execution on Serve Efficacy in Men`s and Women`s Beach Volleyball

        ( A. B. Lopez Martinez ),( J. M. Palao ) 한국스포츠정책과학원(구 한국스포츠개발원) 2009 International Journal of Applied Sports Sciences Vol.21 No.1

The purpose of this study was to assess the effect of serve technique and its manner of execution on the efficacy of the serve in beach volleyball according to gender. A total of 1073 serves from 25 sets of the 2003 World Championship and the 2004 Olympic Games were analyzed (508 serves from men`s games and 576 serves from women`s games). The variables studied were: type of serve (standing serve or jump serve), manner of execution (origin, destination, and distance), serve efficacy, result of the action, and gender. Descriptive and inferential analyses of the data were done (chi-square test and likelihood ratio) with a level of statistical significance set at p<0.05. The results show that for both genders: a) the jump serve involved a higher number of errors, points, and actions that limited the opponent; b) the jump serve and standing serve involved similar levels of efficacy; c) the serve directed toward the interference zone between receivers was the most effective; d) players used the jump serve and the standing serve; and e) no relationship was found between type of serve and result of the rally.

Differences Between Winning and Losing Teams in Youth Basketball Games (14-16 Years Old)

        ( Ortega E. ),( Cardenas D. ),( Sainz De Baranda P. ),( Palao J. M. ) 한국스포츠정책과학원(구 한국스포츠개발원) 2006 International Journal of Applied Sports Sciences Vol.18 No.2

Match analysis is common in performance sport to guide training and competition. However, it is not as common at the youth level. Most studies about match analysis have studied the variables of technique and tactics in relation to final actions of a team`s ball possession. However, a few studies have analyzed participation variables of technique and tactics. The purpose of this study was to determine the differences in final and participatory actions of technique and tactics in relation to winning and losing teams, ball possession, and type of attack phase in youth basketball games. The sample consisted of 184 male players from 16 teams with an average age of 15.6 ± 0.2 years. The twenty-four games were analyzed from the men`s under-16 finals of the Championship of Andalusia (Spain). The variables studied were: game result (win or loss), variables related to type of ball possession, and variables related to pattern of play. Two groups of three observers were utilized (one group observed terminal events of each possession and the other observed possession time and pattern of play). The minimum inter-observer correlation was 0.94. The results found significant differences between winning and losing teams in the following variables: winning teams had higher values than losing teams in the following variables: 2-point field goals made, free throws made, dribbling opposed, time of movement, dribble time, use of screens, fast breaks, attack phases from 1-5 seconds, attack phases in which 2 players participated, and attack phases in which 5 players participated. The results showed that the winning teams have patterns of play that use less dribbling, in general, and less dribbling with displacement, in particular; and they used fast attack phases (1-5 s) in which two players participate. Winning patterns of play were those that used either fast breaks or a long attack phase in which all players participated.
