Toxocara canis is a gastrointestinal helminthes of dogs found all over the world. When dogs ingest the infectious eggs of Toxocara canis, the eggs hatch and larvae penetrate the intestinal wall carried by migration to a wide variety of tis-sues. Despite its zoonotic effects, there have been few reports on dogs diagnosed as canine ascaridiasis in Korea. In this report, we present a case of canine toxocariasis by histopathologic finding and PCR assay. H&E stain showed granulomatous inflammation and intralesional larva in organs and even the cortex of the cerebellum. Toxocara canis was confirmed in the PCR assay where DNZ was extracted from heart, liver and cerebellum.

We compared the clinical signs, histopathological lesions and distribution of viral antigens among infected young (meat-type) and older (breeder) ducks that were naturally infected with the highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) virus during the 2010-2011 Korean outbreak. The meat-type ducks had a high mortality rate (30%) and showed severe neurological signs such as head tremors and paresis. In contrast, HPAI-infected breeder ducks had minimal clinical signs but a decreased egg production rate. The histopathological characteristics of infected meat-type ducks included necrotic lesions of heart and brain, which may have primarily contributed to the high mortality rate. In contrast, the breeder ducks only presented necrotic splenitis, and viral antigens were only detected in the trachea, lungs and spleen. Younger ducks had a high viral titre in the organs, high levels of viral shedding and a high mortality rate after experimental HPAI virus infection. Compared to the breeder ducks, the meat-type ducks were raised in smaller farms that had poor quarantine and breeding facilities. It is therefore possible that better biosecurity in the breeder farms could have reduced the infection dose and subsequently the severity of the disease. Thus, age and management may be the influencing factors for HPAI susceptibility in ducks.

This experiment was done to set up the immunohistochemical detection method for infectious hematopoietic necrosis virus(IHNV) antigens in the monolayers of CHSE-214 cell cultures inoculated with IHNV. Specific identification of IHNV antigens was detected in the cytoplasms of infected cells by the use of monoclonal antibodies to glycoproteins. The specific positive signal was observed as a distinct red color. The result showed that streptavidin alkaline phosphatase immunohistochemistry specifically identified IHNV antigens in infected cultured cells.
Agreement of two ELISAs for Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis in cattle in Korea

Paratuberculosis caused by Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis (Mpt) is a chronic infectious enteric disease with deleterious impact on the performance in ruminants. In Korea, ELISA has been introduced to detect antibodies to Mpt in individual cattle. However, comparison study with ELISA has not been studied until now. In total, a panel of 899 serum samples obtained from dairy cattle was analyzed with two commercial ELISAs for Mpt to assess the performance. Two ELISAs employed in this study were both licensed worldwide. Two ELISAs applied onto same serum samples showed the moderate agreement (kappa value = 0.60). There was non-significant McNemar test (p = 0.0614) between two ELISA results indicating that each proportion detected by two kits did not differ. In addition, the percent agreement between two ELISA results was turned out to be 96.8% which interpreted excellent reproducibility. It was shown from this study that two ELISAs revealed moderate kappa agreement performance. The implication raised is that when ELISAs as diagnostics are used to detect Mpt in individual cattle, positive reaction by either ELISA should be interpreted as serologically Mpt positive due to presumed low sensitivity of ELISAs and their test agreement being less than 100%.

Fibrous hamartoma of infancy (FHI) is a rare benign soft tissue tumor that is composed of an organoid pattern of fibrous tissue and primitive mesenchyme and adipose tissue. The majority of cases of fibrous hamartoma of infancy occur within the first year of life as a single painless subcutaneous nodule. We experienced and report on an uncommon case of protruding fibrous hamartoma of infancy in an 1-year-old girl. (Korean J Dermatol 2011;49(4): 357∼359)

There have been a small number of recent case reports of patients with erythematous patches around the joints, which histopathologically showed histiocytic aggregations in the dermal vessels. Intralymphatic histiocytosis (ILH) is a rare group of skin diseases that are characterized by the proliferation of histiocytes in a lymphatic vessel lumen, and this is thought to arise as a benign reaction to certain stimuli such as rheumatoid arthritis. The pathogenesis of this intralymphatic proliferation of histiocytes and the reasons they commonly present on the arms are still unknown. We report on a case of ILH with arthritis in a 68-year old female who had no underlying disease, and the ILH presented as irregular erythematous patches on the left antecubital area and these patches demonstrated the distinctive histopathological features of intralymphatic histiocytosis. Aflatoxins produced by Aspergillus spp. are recognized as a major concern in animal and human health. In pigs, ingestion of aflatoxin-contaminated feeds causes immunosuppression, hepatotoxicosis and poor feed efficiency. In this study, we screened the contaminated level of aflatoxins in 449 pig feeds from 12 swine farms in Korea. For rapid and efficient screening of aflatoxins in pig feeds we evaluated the feasibility of three commercial ELISA kits for the screening of aflatoxins in pig feeds. Twenty-nine pig feed samples were examined for total aflatoxins using three ELISA kits, simultaneously. From three repetitions of each assay, the average intra-assay precisions and the average inter-assay precisions expressed as coefficient of variation (CV, %) for Veratox(R) Quantitative Aflatoxin test were 6.90 and 12.29, respectively. A statistical comparison of the results between HPLC and ELISAs showed that the correlation coefficient values for Veratox(R) was 0.96. The results demonstrated that we can apply the Veratox(R) Quantitative Aflatoxin test for the detection of aflatoxins in pig feed from the field. The screening of field samples with this ELISA kit showed that 11 out of 265 pig feeds for growers and weaners were contaminated with total aflatoxin levels exceeding 10 ppb, maximum tolerable limits for their compound feeds and the aflatoxins levels of remaining 184 pig feeds for other age groups of pigs were confirmed as below 20 ppb. The results from the screening indicated overall low levels of aflatoxins contamination in pig feeds.
