<P>Neural transplantation is one of the most promising treatments for neurodegenerative disorders. Survival rates of embryonic dopamine (DA) neurons following transplantation are low, between 2% and 20% in a number of animal models. To further establish survival changes of the transplanted gestational day 13.5 ventral mesencephalic (VM) cells into left intact adult rat striata so that design strategies of increasing survival of DA neurons, the tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) expression of VM-derived progenitor cells has been examined using immunohistochemistry and Western blot analysis. TH immunostaining revealed that the grafted VM cells developed to mature TH-positive neurons strongly at 3 weeks, peaked at 4 weeks, thereafter, gradually dropped following the degenerative expression of the grafted cells at both 5 and 6 weeks after transplantation. Western blot analysis also showed that the TH proteins were maximally expressed at 4 weeks post-grafting. Our finding suggested that the peak of surviving VM-derived TH positive cells occurred approximately 4 weeks after transplantation.</P>
Clinical significance of coagulation factors in operable colorectal cancer

<P>Abnormal hemostasis in cancer patients has prev iously been studied. The primary objective of the present study was to evaluate the association between preoperative hemostasis markers and clinicopathological parameters, and to identify a hemostasis marker affecting survival in patients following curative resection for colorectal cancer. A total of 170 patients who underwent curative surgery for colorectal carcinoma were evaluated. Preoperative coagulation tests included platelet, prothrombin time (PT), activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT), fibrinogen, D-dimer and fibrinogen degradation product (FDP). The clinicopathological variables, including age, gender, tumor location (rectum/colon), tumor size (≥5 cm vs. <5 cm), depth of tumor invasion, lymph node metastasis, stage, lymphovascular invasion, margin involvement and histological differentiation were analyzed. The median age of analyzed patients was 63 years (range, 28–84). The male to female ratio was 62:38. Increased levels of plasma fibrinogen, PT and platelet count (PLT) were associated with larger tumor size (P<0.001, P=0.015 and P=0.002, respectively). Increased plasma fibrinogen levels were significantly associated with depth of tumor invasion and stage (P=0.014 and P=0.048, respectively). Increased plasma D-dimer and FDP levels were significantly associated with tumor node metastasis stage (P=0.031 and P=0.002, respectively). Prolonged PT level (≥11.7 sec), hyper-fibrinogenemia (≥327 mg/dl), high D-dimer level (≥1.3 µg/ml) and increased FDP level (≥2.7 µg/ml) were the prognostic factors associated with shorter survival. Preoperative plasma fibrinogen level was significantly associated with tumor size and depth of tumor invasion. Preoperative plasma prolonged PT level, hyperfibrinogenemia, high D-dimer level and increased FDP level may function as hemostasis markers that predict overall survival in operable patients with colorectal cancer.</P>

This paper presents the iron loss prediction of rotating electric machines taking account of the vector hysteretic properties of electrical steel sheet. The E&S vector hysteresis model is adopted to describe the vector hysteretic properties of a non-oriented electrical steel sheet, and incorporated into finite element analysis (FEA) for magnetic field analysis and iron loss prediction. A permanent magnet synchronous generator is taken as a numerical model, and the analyzed magnetic field distribution and predicted iron loss by using the proposed method is compared with those from a conventional method which employs an empirical iron loss formula with FEA based on a non-linear B-H curve. Through the comparison the effectiveness of the presented method for the iron loss prediction of the rotating machine is verified.

<P>To describe the vector magnetic hysteresis phenomenon of electrical steel sheets, an improved vector Jiles-Atherton hysteresis model is presented. The proposed model is developed based on Berqvist model. First, the anhysteretic magnetization function is improved by modifying the model parameters according to the excitation direction. By this, the modeling results are accurate under different alternating and nonsaturated rotating excitations. Furthermore, to model the magnetic property under saturated rotating excitations accurately, the proposed model is extended by modifying the model parameters according to the measured data. The proposed model is validated through comparisons between modeling and measured results under different alternating and rotating excitations.</P>

<P>Fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) is a developmental neuropathology resulting from <I>in utero</I> exposure to ethanol; many of ethanol's effects are likely to be mediated by the neurotransmitter γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA). We studied modulation of the neurotransmitter receptor GABA<SUB>B</SUB>R and its capacity for intracellular signal transduction under conditions of ethanol treatment (ET) and RNA interference to investigate a potential role for GABA signaling in FAS. ET increased GABA<SUB>B1</SUB>R protein levels, but decreased protein kinase A-α (PKA-α), calcium/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase II (CaMKII) and phosphorylation of cAMP-response element binding protein (p-CREB), in cultured hippocampal neurons harvested at gestation day 17.5. To elucidate GABA<SUB>B1</SUB>R response to ethanol, we observed the effects of a GABA<SUB>B</SUB>R agonist and antagonist in pharmacotherapy for ethanol abuse. Baclofen increased GABA<SUB>B</SUB>R, CaMKII and p-CREB levels, whereas phaclofen decreased GABA<SUB>B</SUB>R, CaMKII and p-CREB levels except PKA-α. Furthermore, when GABA<SUB>B1</SUB>R was knocked down by siRNA treatment, CaMKII and p-CREB levels were reduced upon ET. We speculate that stimulation of GABA<SUB>B1</SUB>R activity by ET can modulate CaMKII and p-CREB signaling to detrimental effect on fetal brain development.</P>
마을사업의 지역역량강화사업에 대한 주민 인식 변화 분석 - 농촌마을과 어촌마을 주민 인식 변화 비교-

농림축산식품부와 해양수산부 등 각 부처에서는 농산어촌마을의 활성화를 위해 다양한 사업을 수행하고 있다. 농산어촌 마을의 공동체 회복 및 주민 의식을 높이려는 정부의 노력에도 불구하고, 도시공동체와 농산어촌 공동체의 차이는 점점 더 벌어지고 있다. 지금까지의 농산어촌 평가에 관한 연구는 주로 농촌에 치중되었으며, 사업유형에 대한 평가 및 개선방안, 운영관리 방안에 대한 분석, 세부사업별 중요도 측정 등에 집중되어 왔으며, 사업의 직접적인 수혜자인 주민들의 만족도에 대한 평가는 많이 이루어지지 않았다. 특히 농촌과 어촌 주민들에 대한 비교 연구는 미흡하였다. 본 연구는 해양수산부 주관 강원어촌특화지원센터 맞춤형역량강화사업 사업지구인 강원도 고성군 현내면 초로리 마을 주민과 농촌중심지활성화사업 지구인 강원도 정선군 임계면 송계리 마을 주민들을 대상으로 역량강화사업을 통한 교육 전과 후의 마을사업에 대한 인식과 만족도 조사가 이루어졌다. 주민역량 및 만족도 분석을 개인·대인·사회적 차원으로 구분하여 설문 문항 분석을 시행하였다. 설문 조사는 교육 전·후를 구분하여 설문지를 배포하여 실시하였고, 주민들의 인지 상태에 따라 1:1 설문 항목 조사를 시행하였다. 설문조사를 토대로 요인분석, 신뢰도 분석, 독립표본 T-검정을 사용하여 분석한 설문 조사 수치 비교(리커트척도)결과, 현내면 초도리는 -0.20 만큼 감소하였다. 이번 연구로 분석된 연구 결과들은 향후 지역역량강화사업을 하는 데 있어 농촌 마을과 어촌마을의 차이를 인식하고 이를 사업에 반영하여 사업의 성과를 높이는데 일정 부분 기여할 것으로 기대되며, 강원도뿐만 아니라 다른 지역으로 연구대상을 확대하여 농촌 마을과 어촌마을 주민들의 인식 변화와 차이에 관한 폭넓은 연구가 필요할 것이다.
DNA Ligase4 as a Prognostic Marker in Nasopharyngeal Cancer Patients Treated with Radiotherapy

Background: The capability for DNA double-strand breaks (DSBs) repair is crucial for inherent radiosensitivity of tumor and normal cells. We have investigated the clinicopathologic significance of DNA repair gene expression in nasopharyngeal (NP) carcinoma. Materials and Methods: A total of 65 NP cancer patients who received radiotherapy were included. The immunopositivity to Ku 70, DNA-PKcs, MRN, RAD50, XRCC4, and LIG4 were examined in all tumor tissues. Results: The patients comprised 42 males and 23 females, with a median age of 56 years (range, 18-84). The expression levels of RAD50 (0,+1,+2,+3) were 27.7%, 32.3%, 21.5%, and 18.5%. LIG4 (${\pm}$) were 43.1% and 56.9% respectively. The 5-year OS rate of patients with LIG4 (${\pm}$) were 90% and 67.9%, respectively (p=0.035). The 5-year TTP rate of patients with LIG4 (${\pm}$) were 75.9%, 55.5%, respectively (P=0.039). Conclusions: Our results suggest the possibility of predicting the radiosensitivity of NP cancer by performing immunohistochemical analysis of LIG4.

Background/Aims: CD11c is a dendritic cell marker in humans, which potentially induces a cytotoxic effect on lymphoma cells. Forkhead boxP<sub>3</sub> (FOXP<sub>3</sub>) is a regulator of T lymphocyte in the microenvironment of the lymphoma. The principal objective of this study was to determine whether the tumors` microenvironment expressions of CD11c and FOXP<sub>3</sub> are predictive of clinical outcomes in diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) patients receiving treatment with rituximab, cyclophosphamide, anthracycline, vincristine, and prednisone (R-CHOP) combination chemotherapy. Methods: The study population consisted of 100 patients with DLBCL. The CD11c and FOXP<sub>3</sub> expression in primary tumors` microenvironment were evaluated using an immunohistochemistry (IHC). Results: CD11c and FOXP<sub>3</sub> expression positivity in microenvironment were 25% and 35%, respectively. Each one counted for 1 point. In CD11c and FOXP<sub>3</sub> stain, positive was counted as 0 and negative was 1. The points were separated into low risk (0 to 1) and high risk (2) groups. Only the extranodal DLBCL patient group analysis conveyed significant differences of progression-free survival (p = 0.019) and overall survival (p = 0.039) between the two groups. Conclusions: We can achieve possible clinical significance of lymphoma tumor microenvironments through CD11c and FOXP<sub>3</sub> IHC stains in extranodal DLBCL patients receiving R-CHOP therapy.

Background/Aims: This study investigated whether patients with acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL) truly fulfill the diagnostic criteria of overt disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC), as proposed by the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ISTH) and the Korean Society on Thrombosis and Hemostasis (KSTH), and analyzed which component of the criteria most contributes to bleeding diathesis. Methods: A single-center retrospective analysis was conducted on newly diagnosed APL patients between January 1995 and May 2012. Results: A total of 46 newly diagnosed APL patients were analyzed. Of these, 27 patients (58.7%) showed initial bleeding. The median number of points per patient fulfilling the diagnostic criteria of overt DIC by the ISTH and the KSTH was 5 (range, 1 to 7) and 3 (range, 1 to 4), respectively. At diagnosis of APL, 22 patients (47.8%) fulfilled the overt DIC diagnostic criteria by either the ISTH or KSTH. In multivariate analysis of the ISTH or KSTH diagnostic criteria for overt DIC, the initial fibrinogen level was the only statistically significant factor associated with initial bleeding (p = 0.035), but it was not associated with overall survival (OS). Conclusions: Initial fibrinogen level is associated with initial presentation of bleeding of APL patients, but does not affect OS.
