Effects of Protein Unfolding and Soluble Aggregates Formation on the Gel Strength of Whey Proteins

Heat-induced gelation is an important functional property of whey proteins. Preheating of calcium reduced whey was reported to increase gel strength. 5% whey-protein solutions were preheated at pH 7 and at various temperatures(60-80℃) for 15 minutes. The amount of soluble aggregates and denaturation enthalpy of preheated whey proteins were measured. Preheating temperature was negatively correlated with denaturation enthalpy (R²=0.857, P=0.008) and positively with the amount of soluble aggregates(R²=0.921, P=0.002). Denaturation enthalpy was negatively correlated with gel strength(R²=0.93, P=0.002). Soluble aggregates and gel strength were positively correlated(R²=0.972, P=0.0003). The formation of three dimensional gel network requires controlled protein denaturation and aggregation. Since preheating leads to the partial denaturation of proteins and the formation of soluble aggregates, preheated whey proteins have a higher gel strength than non-preheated one.

Purpose: To evaluate and compare the clinical efficacy of matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) immunoassay and tear osmolarity measurement in diagnosing dry eye severity. Methods: Dry eye disease (DED) patients underwent diagnostic tests including MMP-9 assay, tear osmolarity measurement, fluorescein tear breakup time, ocular surface staining, anesthetized Schirmer test, Ocular Surface Disease Index questionnaire, and slit-lamp examination. The dry eye parameters were compared according to positive MMP-9 status and increased tear osmolarity. The correlation between dry eye profiles and MMP-9 positivity and high tear osmolarity was also analyzed. Results: Those who tested positive in MMP-9 immunoassay had significantly higher corneal fluorescein staining score and worse DED severity than those who tested negative. The intensity of MMP-9 positivity showed positive correlation with the corneal staining score and DED severity. However, DED patients with high tear osmolarity above 308 mOsm/L did not show significantly different dry eye signs and symptoms compared to those with lower tear osmolarity values. Tear osmolarity was associated with ocular surface staining score in severe DED patients. Conclusions: MMP-9 positivity was associated with ocular surface staining and worse dry eye severity. Therefore, it may be used as a useful indicator of disease severity in conjunction to other diagnostic tests.

Purpose: To evaluate visual performance after bilateral implantation of an extended depth of focus (EDOF) intraocular lens(IOL). Methods: This multicenter, prospective, observational study included 100 patients who underwent bilateral cataract surgerywith a toric or non-toric EDOF IOL (Tecnis Symfony), and 96 patients completed the final assessment at 4 to 6 months. Binocularcorrected distance visual acuity and uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA), uncorrected intermediate visual acuity(UIVA), and uncorrected near visual acuity (UNVA), spectacle independence, visual symptoms, and patient satisfaction wereevaluated. Results: Mean decimal visual acuity results showed a binocular corrected distance visual acuity of 1.10 ± 0.18, UDVA of 1.04 ±0.17, UIVA of 0.96 ± 0.16, and UNVA of 0.68 ± 0.18. Binocular UDVA and UIVA were 0.8 (decimal) or better in 98% and 94% ofpatients, respectively. Binocular UNVA was 0.63 (decimal) or better in 76% of patients. Overall, 76% of the patients achievedspectacle independence across all distances, and more than 85% reported no or mild dysphotoptic phenomena. On a scale of0 to 10, the median patient satisfaction score was 9 for far, 9.5 for intermediate, and 8 for near vision. Conclusions: The Symfony EDOF IOL provided excellent distance, intermediate visual outcome, and functional near visualacuity. The visual results were associated with prominent levels of spectacle independence and patient satisfaction.

<P>Conclusions: Despite a higher UV dose (6.6 J/cm2), accelerated CXL with higher UV intensity and reduced irradiation time showed a smaller topographic flattening effect than did the conventional Dresden protocol in primary keratoconus with documented progression.</P>
One-Step Vapor Deposition Polymerization for Polymer Encapsulated Inorganic Nanoparticles

We demonstrated VDP methodology as a new strategy to fabricate the various inorganic colloid-vinyl polymer core-shell nanostructures. This conceptually new and simple process allowed the formation of the highly uniform PMMA shells on the silica and titania nanoparticle surfaces. The shell thickness could be controlled from ca. 2.5 to 40 ㎚ with changing the monomer/inorganic particle weight ratio. In addition, carbon capsules derived from the silica-PDVB nanoparticles realized the encapsulation and selective release property of pyrene in a different enviro㎚ent and can be applied as a novel nanohybrid material in optical and electronic devices. This novel approach might be expanded to allow the preparation of the various core-shell structures, which include metallic, inorganic, and polymer materials.

백제 사비기에 조성된 궁성 유적인 익산 왕궁리유적의 정원시설과 후원영역에 대한 조사 결과를 통해 백제의 궁내원과 이후 변화 양상에 대한 연구의 기초가 마련되었다. 익산 왕궁리유적의 후원영역을 구성하는 시설은 1)석축시설, 2) 환수구(동·서·북측 및 출수구· 암거시설 등 출수시설), 3) 곡수로(곡수로1~6 및 집수시설), 4) 방형초석 건물지 로 나눌 수 있다. 본고에서는 후원영역 시설들의 조성, 이용시기 및 성격 등을 출토 유물과 함께 살펴보았다. 말각 장방형 석축시설에서 이음부를 통해 이어지는 환수구는 궁성의 후원영역 시설로 조성되어졌다는 것을 확인하였다. 환수구는 동성벽과 북성벽, 서측 경사면 아래의 공방시설 등에 물로 인한 피해를 최소화하기 위해 구릉 경사면에서 물을 집수 혹은 치수하는 역할을 하였고, 동시에 관상을 위한 조경의 역할도 담당하였다고 생각된다. 백제~통일신라시대에 이르는 동안 환수구는 계속적으로 사용 함과 동시에 물에 의한 내부 퇴적도 진행되었다. 이후, 환수구 내부가 완전히 퇴적된 시기에, 환수 구와 동일한 필요성으로 서측 경사면에 곡수로가 새롭게 조성되었고, 같은 시기에 방형초석 건물지도 세워진 것으로 보인다. 사찰로 운영되던 익산 왕궁리유적은 나말여초 시기가 되면, 통일신라 중앙 정부의 지방에 대한 지배권이 약화되면서, 백제의 세력을 재건하고자 하는 견훤(후백제)의 거점, 혹은 고려를 건국하려는 세력 등에 의해 재정비되었던 것으로 보인다. 이것은 왕궁리 5층석탑을 조영했던 시기와도 동일하며, 이 시기에 후원영역에서 역시 곡수로, 방형초석 건물지 등 새로운 유구의 조성이 함께 이루어진 것으로 보인다. The base of research is prepared through excavation and study on the royal garden at the remains of Wanggung-ri which were constructed in Sa-bi period of Baek-je. The elements for the royal garden at the remains of Wanggung-ri were divided in 4 parts. - 1) Round angel rectangular stonework facility 2) Large moat-shaped ditch 3) Winding waterway(1~6 and water catchment) 4) Square cornerstone building I examine excavated artifacts to unpack the using period, characteristics and the time when facilities were built in the royal gatden. I confirmed that the round angel rectangular stonework facility and the large moat-shaped ditch which were connected by joint are one of the facilities in the royal garden. The large moat-shaped ditch took several roles, especially water catchments and landscaping. The large moat-shaped ditch protected the eastern, the northern walls and workshop site under the inclined plane to minimize the damage. The large moat-shaped ditch was continually used from the period of Baek-je to the unified Silla, as a result it was completely deposited inside. After that, the 6 winding waterway were built in the western inclined plane with similar needs with the large moat-shaped ditch, and the square cornerstone building was built in same time. The remains of Wnaggung-ri was managed as a temple from the late of the 7C to the late Silla to early Goryeo Dynasty. From the late Silla to early Goryeo Dynasty, the function of the central government(the unified Silla) weakened, this place is reorganized by the power of the post Baek-je, Kyun-hwun(甄萱) who wanted to rebulid Beak-je or the power of Goryeo Dynasty which wants to control this area. This is the same period with a five-story stone pagoda was bulit, the winding waterway(1~6 and water catchment) and the square cornerstone building.
