This study investigated the feasibility of the lytic, tailed Bacillus cereus-specific phage for use in a ferromagnetoelastic (FME) biosensor as a novel recognition element. The phage was immobilized at various concentrations through either direct adsorption or a combination of 11-mercapto-1-undecanoic acid (11-MUA) and [N-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)-N’-carbodiimide hydrochloride and N-hydroxysuccinimide (EDC/NHS)]. The effects of time and temperature on its lytic properties were investigated through the exposure of B. cereus (4 and 8 logCFU/ml) to the phage (8 logPFU/ml) for various incubation periods at 22°C and at various temperatures for 30 and 60 min. As the phage concentration increased, both immobilization methods also significantly increased the phage density (p < 0.05). SEM images confirmed that the phage density on the FME platform corresponded to the increased phage concentration. As the combination of 11-MUA and EDC/NHS enhanced the phage density and orientation by up to 4.3-fold, it was selected for use. When various incubation was conducted, no significant differences were observed in the survival rate of B. cereus within 30 min, which was in contrast to the significant decreases observed at 45 and 60 min (p < 0.05). In addition, temperature exerted no significant effects on the survival rate across the entire temperature range. This study demonstrated the feasibility of the lytic, tailed B. cereus-specific phage as a novel recognition element for use in an FME biosensor. Thus, the phage could be placed on the surface of foods for at least 30 min without any significant loss of B. cereus, as a result of the inherent lytic activity of the B. cereus-specific phage as a novel recognition element.

The aim of this study was to isolate and characterize a lytic Yersinia enterocolitica-specific phage (KFS-YE) as a biocontrol agent. KFS-YE was isolated and purified with the final concentration of (11.72 ± 0.03) log PFU/ml from poultry. As observed by transmission electron microscopy, KFS-YE consisted of an icosahedral head and a contractile tail, and was classified in the Myoviridae family. KFS-YE showed excellent narrow specificity against Y. enterocolitica only. Its lytic activity was stable at wide ranges of pH (4-11) and temperature (4-50°C). The latent period and burst size of KFS-YE were determined to be 45 min and 38 PFU/cell, respectively. KFS-YE showed relatively robust storage stability at -20, 4, and 22°C for 40 weeks. KFS-YE demonstrated a bactericidal effect in vitro against Y. enterocolitica and provided excellent efficiency with a multiplicity of infection as low as 0.01. This study demonstrated the excellent specificity, stability, and efficacy of KFS-YE as a novel biocontrol agent. KFS-YE may be employed as a practical and promising biocontrol agent against Y. enterocolitica in food.

Background: The purpose of this study was to identify the clinical and radiological outcomes of hook plate fixation for lateral end fracture of the clavicle and acromioclavicular dislocation. Methods: There were a total of 20 cases with lateral end fracture of the clavicle and 16 cases with acromioclavicular dislocation. All patients were evaluated for range of motion, functional score by using Constant score, and American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons shoulder index at just before implant removal and at final follow-up. Coracoclavicular distance was measured in acromioclavicular dislocation and bony union was evaluated in the lateral end fracture of the clavicle. Results: The clinical outcomes and range of motion were increased at the final follow-up compared with just before implant removal in both the lateral end fracture of the clavicle and acromioclavicular dislocation. In acromioclavicular dislocation, all cases—except one—showed maintenance of reduction after implant removal. Moreover, in the lateral end fracture of the clavicle, all cases—except one—showed bony union. Conclusions: Hook plate fixation in the lateral end fracture of the clavicle and acromioclavicular dislocation resulted in good clinical and radiological results.

Background: This study compared the clinical and radiological outcomes of the single calcar screw plate and Polarus nail techniques for the treatment of the proximal humerus fractures. Methods: Seventy-two patients diagnosed with displaced proximal humerus fracture were enrolled for the study. Of these, 50 patients underwent the locking plate surgery with a single calcar screw (plate group), whereas 22 patients underwent the Polarus nail surgery (nail group). The plate group was further divided into plate 1 group (with medial support), and plate 2 group (without medial support). The radiological and functional results of both groups were compared to the nail group. Results: The a angle 1 year after surgery was significantly different between plate 1 and plate 2, and plate 2 and nail groups (p=0.041, p=0.043, respectively). The ratio that does not satisfy the reference value of g angle was 2.8% in plate 1, 7.1% in plate 2 and 22.7% in nail group (p=0.007); there was a significant difference between plate 1 and nail group, and plate 2 and nail group (p=0.014, p=0.033, respectively). Conclusions: No significant differences were observed in the clinical results between locking plate and Polarus nail. However, in the plate 2 group and nail group, the rate of failure to maintain reduction during the 1-year period after surgery was statistically and significantly higher than the plate 1 group (level of evidence: level IV, case series, treatment study).

Background: Confluent and reticulated papillomatosis (CRP) is an uncommon dermatosis that affects young individuals and presents with greyish papules that coalesce to form a peculiar reticulated pattern usually on the trunk. Histological findings show hyperkeratosis, papillomatosis and some acanthosis, resembling the histological pattern of acanthosis nigricans (AN). AN is clinically characterized by patches or plaques with a greyish papillomatous texture, typically localized on the neck and in intertriginous areas such as the axillae and groin. Objectives: The pathogenesis of CRP and AN is still unknown, CRP and AN are considered as two distinct pathologies and differentiated because of their distinctiveclinical features, but sometimes it is not easy to distinguish these two disease. Methods: Eleven subjects with initially ambiguous diagnosis of CRP or AN were included in our study. Some cases were hard to diagnose exactly, moreover, some cases were considered coexistence of two diseases, although two diseases show different clinical and histopathological findings. So we tried oral minocycline to patients for diagnostic therapy. Results: By the therapeutic response to minocycline, 4 cases were supposed to be as CRP concurrent with AN, 4 cases as CRP, and 3 cases as AN. Conclusion: In conclusion, we consider that the trial of oral minocycline helps to differentiate CRP from AN.

Purpose: This study attempted to evaluate the pattern of change of the pain after total hip arthroplasty (THA) and to confirm the effect of periarticular multimodal drug injection (PMDI) on controlling the early postoperative pain. Materials and Methods: Of the total patients who underwent primary THA at our hospital because of osteonecrosis of the femoral head from March to October 2008, 60 patients were enrolled in this study. The subjects were divided into three groups. Groups 1 & 2 received periarticular injection. Group 1 included the patients who were injected with a combination of opioid, long-acting local anesthetics, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug and epinephrine. Group 2 received a combination of morphine and ropivacaine and group 3 was not injected with any analgesics. The visual analogue scale (VAS) at 4 hours, 8 hours, 12 hours, 24 hours, 2 days, 3 days, 5 days, 14 days and 1 month after surgery, the frequency that patients pushed the self-controlled pain medication machine for 2 days after surgery and the amount of clonac that was injected according to the needs of the patients were used as objective measures. Results: The VAS score at postoperative 4 hours to 3 days among the groups showed a significant difference (P<0.05), but the VAS scores at postoperative 5 days to 1 month among the groups showed no significant difference (P>0.05). The frequency of pushing the self-controlled pain medication machine among the groups and the amount of clonac according to the needs of the patients among the groups showed that there were significant decreases at the operation day, the postoperative 1, 2 day and the 3 days (P<0.05). Conclusion: PMDI has a significant effect on controlling the early postoperative pain after THA.
