Xylitol fermentation by Candida subtropicalis WF79 immobilized in polyacrylic hydrogel films
Chee-Shan Chen,Wen-Chang Liaw,Wen-Shion Chang,Kuan-Pin Chen,Yee-Fan Chen 한국화학공학회 2008 Korean Journal of Chemical Engineering Vol.25 No.5
Polyacrylate hydrogel films were used as immobilization matrices for cell entrapment of the yeast strain, Candida subtropicalis WF79, isolated from sugarcane bagasse. The hydrogel films with immobilized viable yeast cells were employed for the bioconversion from xylose to xylitol. The hydrogel was prepared from the monomers of 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA), methacrylic acid (MAA), and N,N-dimethyl acrylamide (DMA) with polyethylene glycol diacrylate (PEG-DA, weight-average molecular weight Mw=400 and 1,000 g/mol) as the crosslinking agent. The mechanical properties and fermentation yields of the immobilized polyacrylate hydrogel film with different monomeric formulation were investigated. Fermentation was carried out in a medium of 100 mL aqueous solution containing various amount of xylose. The conversion rate of xylose to xylitol conversion reached a maximum value of 80% after 120 h. The bioconversion activity gradually declined, after 720 h, to 65% conversion at 1,080 h

A battery module diagnostic system with lowcost and compact configuration is proposed. The proposed diagnostic system consists of a MCU, a signal capturing circuit, a HMI (human machine interface) and a sinusoidal load. To validate the dynamic characteristics of a lithium battery module, the proposed wide-range slew-rate sinusoidal load is served as a test load. In this study, the extracted energy from the tested battery module during diagnostic process can be recycled to save energy. In addition, all the battery module parameters and test conditions can be preset in the HMI, the battery characteristics and the recycling rate of the electrical energy also can be estimated. All the analysis of operation modes, simulations, and some experimental results are used to verify the theoretical predictions.
Removal of phenol from gas streams via combined plasma catalysis
Kuan Lun Pan,Dai Ling Chen,Guan Ting Pan,Siewhui Chong,Moo Been Chang 한국공업화학회 2017 Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Vol.52 No.-
A hybrid system consisting of non-thermal plasma and perovskite-like catalyst is developed andevaluated for the effectiveness in removing phenol from gas streams. For thermal catalysis,La0.8Sr0.2Mn0.8Cu0.2O3 shows high activity for phenol removal. Further, La0.8Sr0.2Mn0.8Cu0.2O3 is appliedfor combined plasma catalysis (CPC). The results indicate that phenol removal efficiency with CPCremains 100% at applied voltage range of 13–16 kV. Importantly, secondary pollutants (O3 and NOx) andenergy efficiency can be inhibited and increased, respectively, as CPC is applied. Overall, this studydemonstrates that combining non-thermal plasma with perovskite-like catalyst is effective in removingphenol from gas streams.
Microcantilever biosensor: sensing platform, surface characterization and multiscale modeling
Chen, Chuin-Shan,Kuan, Shu,Chang, Tzu-Hsuan,Chou, Chia-Ching,Chang, Shu-Wei,Huang, Long-Sun Techno-Press 2011 Smart Structures and Systems, An International Jou Vol.8 No.1
The microcantilever (MCL) sensor is one of the most promising platforms for next-generation label-free biosensing applications. It outperforms conventional label-free detection methods in terms of portability and parallelization. In this paper, an overview of recent advances in our understanding of the coupling between biomolecular interactions and MCL responses is given. A dual compact optical MCL sensing platform was built to enable biosensing experiments both in gas-phase environments and in solutions. The thermal bimorph effect was found to be an effective nanomanipulator for the MCL platform calibration. The study of the alkanethiol self-assembly monolayer (SAM) chain length effect revealed that 1-octanethiol ($C_8H_{17}SH$) induced a larger deflection than that from 1-dodecanethiol ($C_{12}H_{25}SH$) in solutions. Using the clinically relevant biomarker C-reactive protein (CRP), we revealed that the analytical sensitivity of the MCL reached a diagnostic level of $1{\sim}500{\mu}g/ml$ within a 7% coefficient of variation. Using grazing incident x-ray diffractometer (GIXRD) analysis, we found that the gold surface was dominated by the (111) crystalline plane. Moreover, using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis, we confirmed that the Au-S covalent bonds occurred in SAM adsorption whereas CRP molecular bindings occurred in protein analysis. First principles density functional theory (DFT) simulations were also used to examine biomolecular adsorption mechanisms. Multiscale modeling was then developed to connect the interactions at the molecular level with the MCL mechanical response. The alkanethiol SAM chain length effect in air was successfully predicted using the multiscale scheme.
Design of Three Phase Wye-Delta LLC Converter with Time Domain Analysis
Kuan-Hung Chen,Jing-Yuan Lin,Yi-Feng Lin,Yu-Chen Chang,Huang-Jen Chiu 전력전자학회 2019 ICPE(ISPE)논문집 Vol.2019 No.5
In the paper, the performance of a 5 kW DC/DC Wye-Delta-based series resonant converter designed for 400V input voltage and 48V output voltage server power supply is evaluated. The paper also performs operation modes analysis, circuit characteristics analysis, and use time domain analysis on Wye-Delta-based series resonant converter for circuit design to replace FHA analysis due to waveform distortion. Finally, a full-load efficiency up to 96.07% and power-density up to 2.84W/cm3 server power supply is implemented.
REVISITING CONSUMER CONTAMINATION: INFLUENCES OF PROXIMITY AND SCOPE OF CONTACT
Fu-Yung Kuan,En-Chi Chang,Sin-Yao Chen 글로벌지식마케팅경영학회 2014 Global Marketing Conference Vol.2014 No.8
According to theory of consumer contamination (Argo, Dahl & Morales, 2006), a product, after being touched by a customer, will be disgusted and devalued by the following customer. However, Argo, et al. (2006) considered only a high salience of contact product, i.e., T-shirts, and did not consider low salience of contact products. This study extended the study of Argo, et al. (2006) and examined whether perception of consumer contamination varies between products of different saliences of contact. The gender difference was also considered. The result from an experiment showed that consumers’ reactions to ‘contaminated’ products vary, depending on the salience of contact. The result also shows that female consumers tend to be more sensitive to consumer contamination.
