      • An Approach to the Improvement of EFL Reading Comprehension - Through Fast Reading and Meaning Grasping

        Im, Byung-Bin. 2001. 속독과 이해학습을 통한 영어 독해력 향상방법. 언어연구 17-2, 245-265. 독해력의 바람직한 정의란 이해와 속독의 균형을 유지해야 한다. 본 연구에서는 이와 같은 독해력의 정의에 기초하여 영어 독해력 향상을 위한 6가지 중요 요소(읽기속도, 훑어읽기, 논리구조 파악, 어휘학습, 통사구조 이해, 문화배경 및 세상지식)를 학습 활동으로 처치하여 대학의 교양영어 수강생을 대상으로 실험을 실시하고 그 결과를 검증하였다. 실험 결과분석에 의하면, 본 연구에서 제시한 독해력 학습방법이 종래의 일반적인 독해력 지도방법보다 훨씬 더 효과적인 것으로 입증되었다. 따라서 영어 독해력 교수학습시에 본 연구에서 제안한 것처럼 속독과 이해훈련을 통한 종합적인 독해력 지도방법이 한국의 영어교육 상황에서 효과적인 대안으로 채택될 필요성이 있다.         초등영어에서 인형극을 활용한 듣기·말하기 능력 향상방안

        This paper is to help the students in elementary schools develop and improve their English listening and speaking skills by presenting effective teaching and learning techniques using puppetry. It is absolutely obvious that listening and speaking are very important skills for most EFL students. Using puppets in the classroom is a creative English teaching technique which can involve authentic, communicative language situations. Moreover, puppets appeal to children and can aid in lowering affective filters thereby creating a more comfortable learning environment. The study clearly showed that using puppets is feasible and enjoyable in elementary English classes. However, caution must be exercised in drawing and generalizing conclusions from this experience. The results of the experiment are as follows: First, using puppetry in the English class was found to have positive influence on students' affective domains (interest, attitude). Second, using puppets in the English classes was found to be efficient for improving students' English listening and speaking skills. Third, appropriate materials should be selected and well thought-out plans should be made to be successful English class using puppetry. Perhaps the most interesting line of future research is to use qualitative research to examine the effect of this technique on the teacher variable. Further research is recommended, especially on using puppetry for speaking proficiency and creating affectively comfortable learning atmospheres.

        의미망 활동과 수준별 학습을 통한 영어 독해력 향상 방안 : Focusing on semantic mapping and leveled group activities

        This paper is to suggest the way to improve EFL reading skill through semantic mapping by leveled group activities. Semantic mapping is a categorical structuring of information in graphic forms or diagrams. It can be used to activate and organize background knowledge on topics in classrooms. For small group activities, the class is divided into higher leveled groups and lower leveled groups of four members based on their grades. The teaching process has three stages: Pre-reading, while-reading, and post-reading. In the pre-reading stage, students discuss what they know about the topic. They map ideas with a brainstorming technique. In the while-reading stage, they read the text about the topic. While they ar reading, they could ask some questions they might have and discuss the information in the text and categorize them with semantic mapping. In the post-reading stage, they discuss what they thought of the topic and add some information about the topic with semantic mapping. For the subjects of this study, third grade, middle school students were selected: 41 students for the experimental group and 35 students for the control group. The experimental period covered almost one semester from March to August, 2000. The results were as follows: 1) The students in the experimental group had higher scores in reading comprehension than those in the control group when semantic mapping was used; 2) The use of semantic mapping in reading comprehension was found to be much more effective in the higher leveled group than in the lower leveled group; 3) The results of questionnaires showed that many students became more interested and motivated in English, and semantic mapping helped them to participate positively in reading the English text. Thus, using semantic mapping by leveled group activities can be an effective alternative to traditional teaching methods for teachers who desire to improve reading skill in middle school students' English classes.

        수행평가의 이해와 적용

        Assessment can be defined as any method used to understand the current knowledge that a student possesses. Assessment may influence decisions about grades, placement, instructional needs, and curriculum. Therefore, the purpose of assessment is to identify how the students think and know, to diagnose the difficulties they face, and to reflect the result of assessment on teaching. But the traditional multiple-choice test failed to evaluate and teach higher-level thinking and problem-solving skills. In this context, performance assessment is being required as an alternative assessment to get better understanding about what the students can do as well as what they know. This article points out some weaknesses of traditional assessments. and comments on the theoretical background and necessity of performance assessment. And it presents more specific information about performance assessment and some examples. It is certain that performance assessment is student-centered and future-oriented. But performance assessment can't be the surest and best way of evaluating the students' abilities. We are just on the way of another experimental stage for improving teaching methodology. More supplementary analyses and further improvements are needed.

        초등학교 영어 수업 지도의 이론과 실제

        This paper is to examine a desirable and promising approach to an effective English teaching in elementary schools. Teachers' understanding English curriculum, teaching methodology, language skills-listening and speaking, and their testing of spoken communication is necessary for students' better learning in their English classes. Thus detailed explanations of English curriculum are presented, and background knowledge of major traditional teaching methods as well as recent trends is discussed. Especially, for the purpose of developing students' English communicative proficiency, classroom teaching and testing techniques of listening and speaking are also discussed with examples.

        중등학교 영어교사 출제 시험문제 분석

        This paper aims to suggest a more desirable measurement in constructing achievement test when English teachers evaluate students' learning during the course. Ten teacher-made tests, randomly sampled from three provincial areas, were analyzed by criteria which were selected on the basis of the related research of language testing. On the other hand, the questionaries of language testing were administered. The results of analyzing the test papers and the questionaries indicate that there have been not a few undesirable deviations to need correction in constructing teacher-made tests. Thus, English teachers should recognize the importance of language testing for better instruction, and refine testing techniques in order to assess students' learning process with reliability and validity.

      • 분산중합을 이용한 Poly(MMA-co-2-HEMA)의 고 고분자량의 합성 및 특성 연구

        Poly[methyl methacrylate(MMA)-co-2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate(2-HEMA)] particles were synthesized by dispersion polymerization in a cyclic hydrocarbon medium. The reactions were carried out at 72~80℃ in the presence of SIS block copolymer and t-butyl peroxy-2-ethyl hexanoate, as steric stabilizer and initiator, respectively. The used cyclic hydrocarbon medium were cyclohexane and methyl cyclohexane. The resulting poly(MMA/2-HEMA) latexes were found to be monodisperse particle diameter of 2~3㎛. Dispersion polymerization of poly(MMA/2-HEMA) were carried out to investigate the effect of concentration of initiator. The molecular weight of poly(MMA/2-HEMA) in presence of methyl cyclohexane than cyclohexane was increased.

        이론과 실제의 상호작용을 통한 효율적인 영어학습

        Nowadays in Korea the subject of English education has been rising as one of the essential matters which need to be emphasized, reorganized, and thus refined. From the history of about one century to the current. English education may be compared to an adolescent sho should be paid much more attention to grow as an independent adult. Although we recognize that there was much improvement in the past age of English education, a lot of assignments to solve await us. This study aims to suggest a recipe for optimal learning in English classes by linking theory with practice: First, the nation-wide academic associations of English teaching should act more energetically and cooperatively than ever. They need further specialization, dynamic participation, and systematic organization. At the same time the academic journals of their own should be publicized broadly, internationally as well as nationally, Second, there should be close contact and discussion between professors and secondary-school teachers. To achieve better learning in English classes, and effective cycle of equilibrium ought to be maintained by combining theory with practice. For example, language institute in universities/colleges can serve instructional programs such as lectures, colloquiums, and intensive courses for conversation. Third, native speakers of English should be positively utilized. Teachers had better keep close contact with native speakers as frequently as possible if they want to become fluent or at least acceptable speakers in English. Teachers may also use native speakers as aides in their classes.

      • 表面活性化法에 의한 異種材料의 低溫接合에 관한 硏究

        본 논문은 서로 다른 재료를 표면활성화법을 이용하여 저온에서 접합할 목적으로 이들 재료의 접합 가능성을 검토하고 이들 접합계면에서의 접합 메카니즘을 검토할 목적으로 연구하였으며 연구 결과는 다음과 같다. 1) 10-7 Torr대의 진공도에서도 알루미늄은 알루미나, 질화 알루미늄, 질화규소, 지르코늄 등의 세라믹스와 양호한 접합이 가능하였다. 2) 알루미늄, 동, 은은 같은 금속끼리의 접합이 가능하였고, 또 알루미늄과 동의 이종재료의 접합도 가능하였다. 3) 실리콘은 알루미늄, 동, 은, 금 등과의 접합 실험결과 모든 금속과 접합이 가능하였다. In this paper considered it possible to bond different materials in low temperature using surface activated method. To do so, it was examined the possibility of bonding different materials and applied the bonding mechanism on the bonding surface. The followings are the result. 1) It was possible that aluminum could be bonded well with ceramics such as alumina, nitrification aluminum, nitrification silicon, and zirconium at the vaccum level of 10-7 Torr. 2) It was possible that aluminum, copper, and copper could be bonded with each other and aluminum and copper could be bonded with other metals. 3) Silicon was bonded with aluminum, copper, silver, and gold which were tested before.
