In this study, we investigated the antibacterial effect of 69 oriental medicinal herbs (OMHs) on Actinomyces viscocus, Streptococcus sobrinus, and two strains of Streptococcus mutans as oral bacteria. Methanol extracts of OMHs were used in the first antibacterial test, and then boiled water, ethanol, methanol, and ethyl acetate extracts of C. japonica, C. sappan, P. mume, and S. chinensis were used in the second test. Boiled water extract of C. japonica was shown to have the most superior effect on oral bacteria. The extract yield of boiled water extract of C. japonica was 22%, and the growth of oral bacteria was almost inhibited at over a 180 mg/ml concentration. Antibacterial effect compound analyzed by UPLC method was identified as berberine, and the content was 25.54%. In addition, the extract appeared to be stable at $121^{\circ}C$ for 15 min.

This paper reports the large scale production of CuO nanoplatelets with smooth surface using a simple hydrothermal method in a water and ethanol solution without any templates or additives. The micro-structure and morphology of the CuO nanoplatelets were examined by X-ray diffraction, Raman spectra, field emission scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. The CuO nanoplatelets were monoclinic, and their length and width ranged from 100 to 300 nm and 80 to 120 nm, respectively. A possible growth mechanism for the formation of CuO nanoplatelets was proposed. The volume ratio of ethanol in the solution was found to be a critical effect on the CuO morphology during the hydrothermal stage. The band gap of the CuO nanoplatelets was estimated to be 2.13 eV from the UV-vis spectra.

The hot deformation behavior of T4-treated ZK60 magnesium alloy was investigated in a compression test conducted with a thermo-mechanical simulator at a temperature range of 523 K to 673 K and a strain rate of 0.001 s−1 to 1 s−1. The results show that the flow stress increases as the deformation temperature decreases and the strain rate increases. Strain-dependent constitutive relationships were developed using regression method and artificial neural network, and good agreements between the experimentally measured values and the predicted ones were achieved. The work hardening analysis and onset of dynamic recrystallization (DRX) were investigated. The processing map reveals a domain of DRX at the temperature range of 620-673 K and strain rate range of 0.001-0.01 s−1, with its peak efficiency of 32% at 623 K and 0.001 s−1,which are the optimum values of the parameters for hot working of the T4-treated ZK60 alloy. The strain level has a great effect on the processing maps and lower temperatures and higher strain rates should be avoided during hot working processes. DRX model indicates that DRX of ZK60 alloy is controlled by the rate of nucleation, which is slower than the rate of migration.

Background and Purpose Oral nucleos(t)ide analogs (NAs) are the mainstay treatment for chronic hepatitis B (CHB). Myotoxicity is an important extrahepatic effect related to NA treatment. Telbivudine is the NA for CHB that is frequently associated with muscle-related side effects. The risk factors for telbivudine-induced myopathy (TIM) are not yet clear. Methods This study characterized the clinical, magnetic resonance images (MRI), and pathological features of 12 TIM cases. A group of telbivudine-tolerant (TT) patients with CHB who received regular telbivudine treatment during the same period without the occurrence of myopathy was collected. Demographic and clinical factors were compared between the patients with TIM and the TT controls. Factors independently associated with TIM were identified using logistic regression analysis. Results The patients with TIM (males/females: 7/5, mean age: 57 years) developed myopathy after using telbivudine for a median period of 19.5 months. Muscle histopathology revealed abnormal proliferation, subsarcolemmal or sarcoplasmic accumulations, and ultrastructural defects of mitochondria. When compared with TT cases, patients with TIM had a lower estimated glomerular filtration rate and were more frequently positive for hepatitis B e antigen (HBeAg). Conclusions Mitochondrial abnormalities are characteristic histopathological features, and impaired renal function and HBeAg positivity are risk factors for TIM. Telbivudine-induced mitochondrial dysfunction and immune activation related to mitochondrial damage and HBeAg serostatus changes may underlie TIM. Constant clinical surveillance of myopathy during telbivudine treatment is needed due to the significant latency of its development. Dose adjustment for impaired renal function does not eliminate the risk of TIM occurrence.

Biosurfactants have versatile properties and potential industrial applications. A new producer, B. subtilis TU2, was isolated from the underground oil-extraction wastewater of Shengli Oilfield, China. Preliminary flask culture showed that the titer of biosurfactant obtained from the broth of TU2 was ~1.5 g/l at 48 h (718 mg/l after purification), with a reduced surface tension of 32.5 mN/m. The critical micelle concentration was measured as 50 mg/l and the surface tension maintained stability in solution with 50 g/l NaCl and 16 g/l CaCl2 after 5 days of incubation at 70oC. FT-IR spectra exhibited the structure information of both glycolipid and lipopeptide. MALDI-TOF-MS analyses confirmed that the biosurfactant produced by B. subtilis TU2 was a blend of glycolipid and lipopeptide, including rhamnolipid, surfactin, and fengycin. The blended biosurfactant showed 86% of oil-washing efficiency and fine emulsification activity on crude oil, suggesting its potential application in enhanced oil recovery.

Post-intensive care unit (ICU) syndrome may occur after ICU treatment and includesICU-acquired weakness (ICU-AW), cognitive decline, and mental problems. ICU-AWis muscle weakness in patients treated in the ICU and is affected by the period of mechanicalventilation. Diaphragmatic weakness may also occur because of respiratorymuscle unloading using mechanical ventilators. ICU-AW is an independent predictor ofmortality and is associated with longer duration of mechanical ventilation and hospitalstay. Diaphragm weakness is also associated with poor outcomes. Therefore, pulmonaryrehabilitation with early mobilization and respiratory muscle training is necessaryin the ICU after appropriate patient screening and evaluation and can improve ICU-relatedmuscle weakness and functional deterioration.
