Exploring Irish Soul : A Symbolical Reading of W. B. Yeats’s The Countess Cathleen

『캐슬린 백작』은 극히 상징적인 극이다. 캐슬린은 부분적으로 앵글로-아일리쉬 엘리트에 대한 예이츠의 이상을 나타내지만, 그녀에게 부여된 이미지와 역할은 여러 가지 면에서 다른 상징적 면을 나타낸다. 그녀는 국가, 아일랜드인의 정신성, 및 눈에 보이지 않는 영혼을 나타낸다. 이 극의 중심이 되는 것은 예이츠가 수집한 민간신앙과 이야기들에 뿌리를 둔 저 세상과 현세와의 교감을 모티브로 하고 있다. 저 세상과의 접촉이 악마의 황금과 영혼을 바꾸는 일로 나타나는데 이는 극적인 정신 상태를 보이는 것이다. 캐슬린이 사람들을 위해서 모든 것을 희생하게 만드는데, 이때 악마들의 역할이 필요하다. 캐슬린은 사람들의 생명에 필수적인 그래서 꼭 지켜져야 하는 것을 상징한다. 동시에 그녀는 동정심이 강하면서 저세상과 근본적으로 맞닿아 있는 영혼을 상징한다. The Countess Cathleen is a deeply symbolic play. While Cathleen embodies in part Yeats’s ideal of the Anglo-Irish elite, images and roles attributed to her denote her other symbolical positions on various levels. She symbolizes a nation, the spirituality of the Irish, and an invisible soul. Central to the play is the motif of interactions between this world and the other world whose roots can be traced to Irish beliefs and stories that Yeats collected. A contact with the other world appears as an exchange of one’s soul for demons’ gold, which primarily signals an extreme state of mind. The demons play an indispensable role in leading Cathleen to total sacrifice for people. Cathleen is symbolical of something that is essential to one’s life and needs to be protected at all cost. At the same time she also embodies a compassionate soul and has a fundamental connection to the other world.

Reflection and Transformation of “The Only Son of Aoife” in W. B. Yeats’s On Baile’s Strand

본 논문은 예이츠의 희곡 『발야스 스트랜드에서』가 어떻게 잘 알려진 아일랜드의 전설 “이퍼여왕의 외동아들”의 수백 년 간의 변형과 관련이 있는지를 연구한다. 이 변화의 역사를 추적하면 자연적인 것과 비자연적인 것의 상충에 대한 주제의 의미를 파악할 수 있게 된다. 예이츠는 심오한 자연의 충동에 뿌리를 둔 초자연의 모티프를 추가를 시도함으로써 본 주제를 탐색한다. 『발야스의 스트랜드에서』는 인간성의 거부는 초자연성의 포기와 함께 간다는 것을 보여주는 동시에 초자연성의 무시는 우리의 의미 깊은 자연적 충동의 힘을 배제할 위험이 있는 것이다. The main purpose of this paper is to explore in what way Yeats’s drama On Baile’s Strand is interconnected with the centuries-old process of transformation of a well-known Irish legend “The Only Son of Aoife.” To trace the history of its transformation leads us to recognize the significance of the theme of conflict between the natural and the unnatural. Yeats explores this theme by adding the motif of the supernatural being rooted in profound natural impulse. On Baile’s Strand demonstrates that the dismissal of human nature goes hand in hand with the withdrawal of the supernatural, while, at the same time, the disrespect for the supernatural involves the danger of cutting off the power of our deep natural instinct.

Onigiri Esophagography as a Screening Test for Esophageal Motility Disorders

Background/Aims No screening test for esophageal motility disorder (EMD) has been established, the objective of this study is to examine the potential usefulness of our newly developed “Onigiri esophagography” combined with an obstruction level (OL) classification system in screening for EMD. Methods A total of 102 patients with suspected EMDs who underwent both high-resolution manometry (HRM) and Onigiri esophagography between April 2017 and January 2019 were examined. The EMD diagnosis was performed based on the Chicago classification version 3.0 by HRM. Onigiri esophagography was performed using a liquid medium (barium sulfate) followed by a solid medium, which consisted of an Onigiri (a Japanese rice ball) with barium powder. The extent of medium obstruction was assessed by the OL classification, which was defined in a stepwise fashion from OL0 (no obstruction) to OL4 (severe obstruction). Results The patients with OL0 (32.3%), OL1 (50.0%), OL2 (88.0%), OL3 (100.0%), and OL4 (100.0%) were diagnosed EMDs by HRM. The area under the curve, as determined by a receiver operating characteristic analysis, for the OL classification was 0.86. Using the cutoff value of OL1, the sensitivity and specificity were 87.3% and 61.3%, respectively, while using a cutoff value of OL2, the sensitivity and specificity were 73.2% and 90.3%, respectively. Conclusion In conclusion, Onigiri esophagography combined with the OL classification system can be used as a screening test for EMDs with a cutoff value of OL1.
