        Raping Translation in Translating Rape: A Case Study of The Bluest Eye

        What this paper deals with is that how it would be then if a male translator happens to deal with rape of women in a woman writer's text that is written from a feminist perspective and if he would possibly, consciously or not, distort the feminist rape narrative in various ways because of his male identity. These research questions are brought from Chen's research, and this paper substantiates them by the analysis and comparison of the Korean translated texts. The recent studies in translation studies, including feminist translation theory, indicate male translators are influenced by gender awareness. Therefore this paper studying the translated texts of two male translators in terms of translating ‘rape’ and ‘incest’ in The Bluest Eye is considered worthwhile. The Bluest Eye written by Tony Morrison and its two different male translators' Korean versions are subject to the comparative analysis of this study.

        한국관련 내외신기사의 제목 및 내러티브 비교분석: 미군 성폭력사건 관련 기사를 중심으로

        The purpose of this paper is to compare and analyze the headlines and the narratives of the domestic and foreign news articles related with the U.S. soldier's rape case. The basic premise of this study shows that there are distinct differences between domestic and foreign news reports on the basis of same case that was happened in Korea. The information on the verdict of this rape case is the point to be specially considered. That is, this can be a good opportunity to closely examine news frames and narratives of domestic and foreign news writing. Especially the contents of the verdict of this case are expected to be translated faithfully to the original. To do this, this study compared and analyzed two domestic and two foreign news articles. One of two foreign articles was based on the news report contributed by Yonhap News Agency. The other does not have any stakes in this case considering the place where it happened is Korea and the sex offender was the U.S. soldier on duty. The study is introducing ‘Institutional Translation’ which has not been studied through and through in order to help to figure out why different news sources translate information in various ways.

        Surface Charge Regulation of Carboxyl Terminated Polystyrene Latex Particles and Their Interactions at the Oil/Water Interface

        <P>We study electrostatic interactions of polystyrene particles at an oil/water interface controlled by a chemical reaction of carboxylate surface functional groups. By replacing the carboxyl functional groups with hydrocarbon chains using the well-known EDC (1-ethyl-3-(3-(dimethylamino)propyl)carbodiimide) coupling reaction, the surface charge density decreases while the hydrophobicity of the colloid surface increases. Direct visualization of the particle-laden interface reveals that, depending on the extent of hydrocarbon coupling, the strength of the electrostatic repulsion can be regulated: the repulsive interaction increases with the reaction, removing aggregates, but rapidly decreases if the reaction proceeds too much, forming a large aggregation. This simple reaction, thus, dramatically changes the structures of the colloidal monolayers at the oil/water interface. We conclude that such structural change is the result of change of the repulsive interactions from the oil phase, although interactions in the water phase are also changed slightly.</P>

        Feasibility of bench-scale selective bioflotation of copper oxide minerals using <i>Rhodococcus opacus</i>

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Bench-scale selective bioflotation tests were carried out in a 1L Denver cell using <I>Rhodococcus opacus</I> (<I>R. opacus</I>) cells as a collector in malachite–silica binary mixture and copper (Cu) oxide ore systems. Through the first set of tests carried out on the binary mixture, cell concentration and malachite fraction in the feed were optimized, and further the role of shear force by varying impeller speed (800, 1000, and 1200rpm) and adhesive force by varying pH (7 and 11) and ionic strength (1, 100, and 300mM) were examined. Overall, high malachite selectivity was observed under optimized conditions (both recovery and grade>90%). In addition, the recovery and grade of malachite were very sensitive to pH changes, with greater values being obtained at pH7, whereas the impeller speed and the ionic strength did not seem to play a big role over the range tested. The trend was in qualitative agreement with classical Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (DLVO) interaction energy profiles, which show the relative magnitudes of the adhesive forces between the mineral and the attached cell under equal hydrodynamic conditions. The second set of tests was conducted using Cu oxide ores with two different particle sizes (74–150μm and −74μm) under the optimized conditions determined from the first set of tests. The recovery and grade of malachite were found to be much greater for finer ores (recovery=29.15% and grade=5.17%) than those for coarser ones (recovery=1.34% and grade=3.06%), which is likely due to differences in malachite liberation.       • Development of Delayed Anaphylactic Reaction after Sugammadex Administration in the Post-Anesthesia Care Unit

        Sugammadex induced anaphylactic reaction is very urgent event as it is usually not anticipated in the advance. The incidence of anaphylactic reaction due to sugammadex is rare, 0.0039% to 0.3%, but it can occur even if there is no previous allergy history, and it often occurs after extubation, so immediate diagnosis and treatment are essential. This report presents a 70-year-old woman who had no previous exposure to sugammadex and allergy history and scheduled to undergo posterior lumbar interbody fusion L4-S1 to treat lumbosacral spondylolisthesis. Anesthesia via propofol, inhalational gas, remifentanil and rocuronium was used. The operation under general anesthesia went well without any problems The patient was administered sugammadex to reversal neuromuscular block, and delivered to post-anesthesia care unit (PACU). After arrival at PACU, she had anaphylactic reaction and received appropriate treatment including epinephrine. She discharged without any complications 6 weeks days after the surgery.

      • Novel Brush Polymers with Phosphorylcholine Bristle Ends: Synthesis, Structure, Properties, and Biocompatibility

        <P>New brush polymers with various numbers of bristle ends incorporating phosphorylcholine (PC) moieties are synthesized. The polymers are thermally stable up to 175 °C and form good-quality films with conventional spin-, roll-, and dip-coating, and subsequent drying processes. Interestingly, all these brush polymers, as a PC-containing polymer, demonstrate a stable molecular multi-bilayer structure in thin films that arise due to the efficient self-assembly of the bristles for temperatures <55 °C and PC-rich surfaces, and therefore successfully mimic natural cell-membrane surfaces. These brush-polymer films exhibit excellent water wettability and water sorption whilst retaining the remarkable molecular multi-bilayer structure, and thus have hydrophilic surfaces. These novel multi-bilayer structured films repel fibrinogen molecules and platelets from their surfaces but also have bactericidal effects on bacteria. Moreover, the brush-polymer films are found to provide comfortable surface environments for the successful anchoring and growth of HEp-2 cells, and to exhibit excellent biocompatibility in mice. These newly developed brush polymers are suitable for use in biomedical applications including medical devices and biosensors that require biocompatibility and the reduced possibility of post-operative infection.</P> <B>Graphic Abstract</B> <P>New brush polymers with various numbers of bristle ends incorporating phosphorylcholine (PC) moieties are synthesized.         Latent Tuberculosis Infection Screening and Treatment in Congregate Settings (TB FREE COREA): Demographic Profiles of Interferon-Gamma Release Assay Cohort

        In 2017, the Korean government launched an unprecedentedly large-scaled latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) screening project which covered more than a million individuals in congregate settings. A total of 1,047,689 participants of source population (n = 2,336,157) underwent LTBI testing from 2017 to 2018. The overall LTBI test uptake rate during this project was 44.8%. Workers in daycare centers (83.5%) and kindergartens (78.9%) showed high participation rate. A total of 1,012,206 individuals with valid results of interferongamma release assay (IGRA) were selected to constitute the IGRA cohort. Most of the enrolled participants in the IGRA cohort were in their working age. Approximately, threequarters of total enrolled population were female. Investigating the LTBI prevalence, stages of LTBI care cascade, natural history of LTBI, efficacy of LTBI treatment and cost-effectiveness of LTBI screening are feasible within this IGRA cohort.

        일부 중학생의 생활습관, 식습관, 음식 선호도 및 섭취빈도가 단맛의 민감도와 최적당도에 미치는 영향

        This study was conducted to determine factors affecting detection threshold and the optimally-preferred concentration for sweet taste, since investigation into factors decreasing sensitivity or increasing preference for sweet taste is important to prevent overconsumption of simple sugar. Subjects were 70 first-grade middle school students in the Gyeonggi-Do. The detection threshold concentration of sucrose solution and the optimally-preferred sucrose concentration of omija jelly were determined by sensory evaluation. A self-administered questionnaire was used to obtain the information regarding health-related lifestyle practices, dietary habits, preference for and eating frequency of Westernized foods and frequencies of eating foods other than home-made. The detection threshold concentration of sucrose solution and the optimally-preferred sucrose concentration of omija jelly of the subjects were 0.204% and 14.44%, respectively. Subjects who exercise less (< 30 minutes/week except PE class), skipping meals (≥ 3/week), type of breakfast rather than traditional Korean meal and frequent eating out and buying foods from school tuck-shop tended to have higher sweet taste threshold. There was significant positive correlation between the sucrose threshold concentration and fried chicken preference or eating frequency of hamburger. Those who exercise less (< 30 minutes/week except PE class) did have significantly higher optimally-preferred sweetness of omija jelly, which tended to be higher in the subjects who had more (≥ 4 out of 10) behavioral or psychological stress symptoms and who had early getting-up time (before 7 am). There was significant positive correlations between the optimally-preferred sweetness of omija jelly and pizza preference, instant noodle eating frequency or sum of eating frequencies of five fast foods. From the results of this study, it was suggested that middle school students should make efforts to stop skipping meals, exercise more, eat Korean traditional breakfast and reduce the frequencies of eating out and using instant/fast foods in order to prevent overconsumption simple sugar.
