        Biocompatible, drug-loaded anti-adhesion barrier using visible-light curable furfuryl gelatin derivative

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Recently, many of studies have been attempted to determine how to decrease adhesion. To effectively prevent adhesion, decrease in unnecessary surgical procedures, prevention of contact with other tissue, and drug treatment for inflammation are required. However, current anti-adhesion materials have disadvantages. To solve current problems, we prepared a biocompatible drug-loaded anti-adhesion barrier using a visible-light curable furfuryl gelatin derivative. We used riboflavin as a photo-initiator in the photo-curing process. The biocompatibility of riboflavin was estimated compared with that of Rose Bengal. In addition, the curing ratio was measured to determine whether riboflavin initiated photo-curing. We also evaluated the curing ratio of riboflavin according to the concentration of F-gelatin and the photo-irradiation time. A drug used to decrease inflammation that causes adhesion should not disappear from the surgical site and should also be released consistently. For this, we observed the release profiles of photo-immobilized ibuprofen with different concentrations of F-gelatin. Because an anti-adhesion barrier should protect from bacterial infection we evaluated the protective ability of a barrier formed by F-gelatin. In conclusion, a drug-loaded anti-adhesion barrier was prepared using a visible-light curable furfuryl gelatin derivative, with riboflavin as a photo-initiator. We expect that this drug-loaded anti-adhesion barrier effectively decrease adhesion formation.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Riboflavin showed the better photo-curable property and biocompatibility as photo-initiator than Rose Bengal. </LI> <LI> As concentration of furfuryl gelatin and photo-irradiation time increase, the photo-curing ratio increase. </LI> <LI> Release profile of photo-immobilized ibuprofen can be controlled by changing the concentration of furfuryl gelatin. </LI> <LI> Surgical site can be protected from bacterial infection by furfuryl gelatin barrier and adhesion also can be decreased. </LI> <LI> Drug-loaded anti-adhesion barrier can protect surgical site and prevent inflammation. </LI> </UL> </P>

      • A statistical analysis of cutanoues tumors of the head and neck

        Background: There have been many changes to the social and medical environment in Korea and many studies showed a steady increase of cutanoues tumors. But none of them included a data occuring from head and neck. Objectives: To investigate the incidence and distribution of the cutaneous tumors of the head and neck. Methods: A total of 1,415 cases of head and neck cutaneous tumors were obtained from pathology specimen at Department of Dermatology in Wonkwang University Hospital between 2010 and 2014. Results: Among 1,415 cases of head and neck cutanoues tumors, 871 cases (61.5%) were benign tumors, 271 cases (19.2%) were malignant tumors, and 273 cases (19.2%) were premalignant lesions. The most common benign head and neck cutaneous tumors was epidermal cyst with 188 cases (21.6%), followed by 173 cases(19.9%) of seborrheic keratosis, 71 cases(8.2%) of intradermal nevi, and 50 cases (5.7%) of nevus sebaceous. The predilection sites of benign head and neck tumors were face(58.8%), scalp(22.3%), neck(10.3%) and ear(8.9%). Among the 271 cases of malignant head and neck cutanoues tumors, there were 164 cases(60.5%) of basal cell carcinoma, 89 cases(32.8%) of squamous cell carcinoma, 5 cases(1.8%) of malignant melanoma. Of the premalignant lesions, there were 210 cases(76.9%) of actinic keratosis, 36 cases (13.2%) of bowen’s disease and 27 cases(9.9%) of actinic cheilitis. Conclusion: This data will be made available for the study of skin tumors in Korea.

        본 글에서는 광반응성 다당류 유도체가 의료용 소재로 응용되기 위해 필요한 특성과 그 응용할 수 있는 분야에 대해 살펴보았다. 의료용 소재로 사용되는 재질 중에 다당류가 생체적합성이 우수하고, 생분해성을 가지고 있으며, 성형하기 쉽다는 장점을 가지고 있다. 광반응성 다당류 유도체를 이용한 의료용 소재는 다당류의 장점을 유지하고 있을 뿐만 아니라, 성장인자 및 단백질 약물들을 광고정화하여 안정성을 높일 수 있다. 이를 바탕으로 여러 의료용 소재분야 뿐만 아니라 다른 산업분야에서도 응용될 수 있을 것으로 사료된다. Recently Research about the medical material is becoming actively performed. the medical materials are required by the properties such as biocompatiblity, biodegradation. Polysaccharide derivatives which have this properties are under great spot lighted as suitable material of the medical material. The conventional drug immobilization method`s several defect is reported. Drug photo-immobilization method using photo-reactive polysaccharide derivative is researched in order to complement several defect of the conventional drug immobilization method. In this research, it is explained that photo-immobilization method and how to apply in medical field using a photo-reactive polysaccharide derivative.

        유착방지제의 응용을 위한 가시광 경화형 Carrageenan 유도체의 제조

        유착방지제를 개발하기 위해 천연고분자인 K-Carrageenan을 이용하여 가시광 경화형 carrageenan 유도체(FCm-Carrageenan)를 제조하였다. Carrageenan은 생분해성, 생체적합성 등과 같은 특성을 가진 천연고분자이다. Riboflavin은 무독성, 생체적합성을 가지는 천연 광개시제이다. Riboflavin은 가시광 경화형 carrageenan 유도체에 광경화를 유도한다. ¹H NMR(proton nuclear magnetic resonance), GPC(gel permeation chromatography) 분석을 통하여 F-Cm-Carrageenan이 제조된 것을 확인하였으며 가시광 조사시간에 따른 광경화 정도를 판단하기 위해서 광경화실험을 진행하였다. 또한 유착방지제로 응용가능 여부를 판단하기 위해서 세포독성 실험, 유착방지 실험, 세포투과 실험을 진행하였다. 따라서 가시광 경화형 carrageenan 유도체는 새로운 형태의 유착방지제로서 응용될 수 있다고 사료된다. To develop anti-adhesion agent using photo-reaction, visible light curable carrageenan derivatives (F-Cm-Carrageenan) was prepared by using K-Carrageenan which is natural polymer. Carrageenan is a natural polymer having properties such as bio-degradability and bio-compatibility. Riboflavin is a non-toxic, bio-compatible natural photo-initiator. Riboflavin induces photo-crosslinking in visible light-curing carrageenan derivatives. ¹H NMR (proton nuclear magnetic resonance) and GPC (gel permeation chromatography) analysis were conducted to confirm that F-Cm-Carrageenan was prepared. Photo-curing test was conducted to determine the degree of photo-curing with visible light irradiation time. To evaluate the applicability as an anti-adhesion agent, cytotoxicity test, anti-adhesion test and cell penetration test were conducted. Therefore, it is considered that the visible light curable carrageenan derivatives can be applied as a new type of anti-adhesion agent.

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>The purpose of this study was to develop dressing foam with drug immobilization abilities by using Azidophenyl alginate (Az-alginate). We characterized prepared Az-alginate. Through the patterning test, immobilization of drug was confirmed. Degrees of photo-curing were identified by the photo-curing ratio test. Cytotoxicity test confirmed that Az-alginate was biocompatible. The protein releasing test measured the degree of drug released according to the concentration of Az-alginate. By examination of the water absorbency and moisture vapor transmission rate, characteristics of the dressing foam with photo-cured Az-alginate were measured. From the results of these tests, Az-alginate can be applied to the dressing foam.</P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>

        전기증착법으로 제조된 WO<sub>3</sub> 박막의 광촉매 특성

        Tungsten trioxide ($WO_3$) is a promising candidate as a photocatalyst because of its outstanding electrical and optical properties. In this study, we prepare $WO_3$ thin films by electrodeposition and characterize the photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue using these films. Depending on the voltage conditions (static and pulse), compact and porous $WO_3$ films are fabricated on a transparent ITO/glass substrate. The morphology and crystal structure of electrodeposited $WO_3$ thin films are investigated by scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and X-ray diffraction. An application of static voltage during electrodeposition yields a compact layer of $WO_3$, whereas a highly porous morphology with nanoflakes is produced by a pulse voltage process. Compared to the compact film, the porous $WO_3$ thin film shows better photocatalytic activities. Furthermore, a much higher reaction rate of degradation of methylene blue can be achieved after post-annealing of $WO_3$ thin films.

      • [P070] Actinic keratosis developed after radiotherapy for Merkel cell carcinoma

        A 86-year-old woman presented with a 2-month history of an asymptomatic solitary irregularly shaped erythematous firm nodule on the left cheek. The biopsy specimen showed hyperchromatic small round blue cells with scanty cytoplasm. The tumor cells were positive for CK20, Synaptophysin and EMA which directed to diagnosis of merkel cell carcinoma. Mohs micrographic surgery with negative resection margin were performed to complete removal of the tumor. The patient underwent post-operative adjuvant radiotherapy for 5 weeks (25 tiems, total 5,000 cGy). After radiotherapy, the patient developed an erythematous papule on the margin of irradiated skin. A whitish macule was notified. This erythematous lesion was developed from whitish macule. Shave biopsy was performed and the histopathology revealed a actinic keratosis. Actinic keratosis and merkel cell carcinoma may arise as a result of chronic exposure to UV light. We suspected that actinic keratosis can be stimulated by low dose radiation. So careful examination to the skin lesions is needed.

        Lichen striatus is a acquired, self-limiting linear inflammatory dermatosis characterized by erythematous flat-topped papules arranged in linear pattern that follows Blaschko`s lines. It occurs most frequently in childhood and less often in adults. A 32-year-old woman presented with a 5-month history of asymptomatic brownish macules and erythematous maculopapules arranged in a linear fashion on the right arm and abdomen. Following history taking revealed she gave birth to a baby six month ago. We performed biopsy of the arm for an exact diagnosis. On the histopathological examination, the specimen of brownish macules and erythematous papules showed lichenoid, lymphocytic infiltrate with basaloid vacuolar degeneration. We could diagnosis as lichen striatus upon these histopathologic and clinical findings. The patient was treated with topical corticosteroid. The etiology of the lichen striatus is unknown. However, several triggering events such as cutaneous injury, hypersensitivity and infection have been proposed to induce a loss of immunotolerance, resulting in a T-cell-mediated inflammation. Our case characterized itself by postpartum period developments. Delivery may have triggered to the appearance of eruption. Therefore, we herein report a case of lichen striatus during in which the lesion developed after labor.
