The purpose of this study was to make ramyon from Korean cultured wheat by adding with hot water extract powder from safflower seed in order to add the value of it. The cooking quality, instrumental texture and sensory characteristics of ramyon were analyzed. The ramyons with 0.1%, 0.3%, 0.5%, and 0.7% of hot water extract powder(HEP) from safflower seed, control, and those with 3% and 5% of dried powder(DP) from safflower seed were compared. The yield of HEP was 7.8%. Lightness, redness, Max. weight, strength, hardness, adhesiveness, cohesiveness and springiness were measured. As the amounts of HEP and DP was increasing, ramyons smelled stronger and was getting harder and chewier, while became less transparent and had no difference in elasticity and adhesiveness. In overall acceptability, both control and ramyon with HEP had similar points. From three important factors, appearance, color and smell to make ramyon more acceptable, addition of 0.3~0.5% of hot water extract powder from safflower seed was found to be the best. However, further studies on smells are needed to make processed foodstuffs with safflower seed.
Recent Progress of PepMoV Resistant GM Pepper

The PepMoV has been considered the most frequently detected potyvirus. When it co-infects with CMV or PMMoV, it gives severe impact to total pepper harvest in Korea. Since F1 hybrid that resistant to PepMoV has not been developed, we have developed transgenic peppers using Agrobacterium-mediated transformation with a Hc-Pro gene of the PepMoV. A large number of GM peppers were tested for resistance to the PepMoV, and after consequent self-crossing up to T4 generation, a highly tolerant pepper to PepMoV called T20 was selected. So far, BC4F1 lines have been selected by back-crossing with 4 elite lines through a breeding program. Very recently, based on molecular analysis, we have selected another event, #10-2, which is also resistant to PepMoV. Horticultural difference was investigated for both GM lines, #T20 and 10-2, and no significance was found comparing to non-GM lines.
An event of gm peppers tolerant to pepper mottle virus (PepMoV)

In Korea, CMV (cucumber mosaic virus) is the most frequently occurring virus with a single infection rate of 45%. However, a total occurrence of CMV by co-infection, either couple or multiple, with BBWV (broad bean wilt virus), PepMoV (pepper mottle virus) and PMMoV (pepper mild mottle virus) covers over 90% in the field cultivation of pepper. The PepMoV is transmitted by several aphid species, and it has been considered the most frequently detected potyvirus when it co-infects with CMV or PMMoV. Since F1 hybrid that resistant to PepMoV has not been developed, we have developed transgenic peppers using Agrobacterium-mediated transformation with a Hc-Pro gene of the PepMoV. A large number of T1 peppers were tested for resistance to the PepMoV, and T1 peppers tolerant of PepMoV were selected. After consequent self-crossing up to T4 generation, highly tolerant peppers to PepMoV were selected. So far, BC3F1 lines have been selected by back-crossing with 4 elite lines through a breeding program. The horticultural differences of the GM line comparing to inbred lines were investigated and no statistical significance between GM and non-GM lines was found. Based on molecular analysis, One of GM lines, 10-2, contained the transgene in the non-coding region indicating that this line would be a GM event.
Analysis of the Impact of CPTPP Membership on the Korean Economy

Purpose - As of 2022, Korea’s dependence on trade was 75%. Korea must join the Comprehensive Progressive Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) in order to keep pace with US-led trade standards in the future. This paper empirically investigated the impacts of Korea’s participation in the CPTPP on the economy. Design/Methodology/Approach - Using the World Input-Output Database and regression analysis, Korea’s CPTPP membership expands trade with 11 countries, including Japan, contributing greatly to the growth of the Korean economy. Findings - Our main findings can be summarized as follows. In 2022, exports and imports to Japan were $30.6 billion and $54.7 billion, respectively. If Korea joins the CPTPP, the economic effect will increase GDP by about 1.7% every year, and is expected to be more than $40.3 billion in 2025. The CPTPP has a great impact on the Korean economy by expanding trade with 11 countries, including Japan. Although Korea already has FTAs with 9 TPP member countries, it has been found that Korea’s GDP expands through additional tariff and non-tariff trade expansion by joining the CPTPP. Research Implications - Existing studies focus on the benefits of Korea on joining the CPTPP. This paper attempts to firstly evaluate the impact of joining the TPP on the Korean economy via analysis of the World Input-Output Database (WIOD).

In this study, we present an adaptive thermogenesis hypothesis on the physiological mechanism of obesity and diabetes. A new mathematical model incorporating a stochastic process of variable uncertainty is also formulated to verify the hypothesis. The method is based on the energy conservation law for human body weight(mass) and the homeostasis principle of body core temperature. According to the theory, a disturbance in heat production or dissipation induces the energy unbalance and so body weight change as a compensatory mechanism is augmented according to the scaling law of body weight. This mechanism is verified in the simulation results compared with experimental results. It is demonstrated that the broken energy balance augments obesity by sequential events from heat balance, scaling law to energy conservation equation.

Background and Objectives : This study was conducted to investigate the actual conditions and the relevant factors of acnes, the most common skin troubles of the adolescent period. Materials and Method : This study was carried out through a survey on 382 female students in a high school from October 24, 2002 to October 31. The survey was formed with questions on the general characteristics of the subject; questions relevant to the actual conditions of acnes; questions of the bio-rhythm; questions on washing and hair shape, the condition of the skin, eating habits; and questions on stress and sicknesses Chi-square test, t-test and multiple logistic regression were used as the method of statistical analysis, to investigate the associated factors with acnes that occur on the face. Results : 1. There were 65.4% of the female students who had acnes, and the most common site were on the forehead and nose, then the cheeks and the whole of the face respectively. On the type of the acnes, 39.1% non-inflammatory acnes, 29.7% were inflammatory and 12.3% were the combination of both 2 As a result of bivariate analysis, there was statistically significant relevance of sleeping time, number of time of washing face, type of cleansing product, type of skin, condition of skin, sensitiveness of skin, preference of meat, menstrual irregularity and stress with acnes 3 Multiple logistic regression analysis showed that the odds ratio(OR) of acnes in case of use of soap instead of cleansing products was 3.00 (95% confidence interval(CI): 1.03 - 8.79), in case of the use of special pimple soap was 27.32 (95% CI 2.68 - 278.51), in case of oily face, 9.40 (95% CI 3.45 - 25.61); in case of combination face was 3.95 (95% CI. 1.64 - 9.50); in case of moist face without shine when compared to seriously lightened skin was 0.22 (95% CI. 0.07 - 0.72); in case of non-preference of meat when compared to preference of meat was 2.00 (95% CI : 1.11 - 3.61) Apart from this, there was no significant relevance with sleeping time, menstrual irregularity and stress Conclusion : It was concluded that there was relevance in the skin condition, skin type and face-wash with the acnes on the face of adolescent female students. There is a necessity of conducting studies about the occurrence of acnes and its relevant factors, in the future.

Objective: Hormonal management is an alternative treatment for preserving fertility in patients with early stage endometrioid endometrial cancer (EC). The safety and clinical outcome in longer treatment more than 9 months has controversial. This study aimed to define the oncologic outcomes after hormone therapy more than 9 months for endometrioid EC. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed patients presumed to have stage IA, grade 1-2 endometrioid EC who underwent fertility-sparing treatment. Concurrent medroxyprogesterone (MPA) and levonorgestrel-release intrauterine devices were used for treatment. The remission rate and progression free survival were analysed of whom had treatment under 9 months (group A) and had treatment over 9 months (group B). Results: One hundred twenty patients presumed to have stage IA, grade 1 endometrioid EC had treated with hormonal medication for fertility sparing. The median age was 33.5 (range 22-43) years old and the median treatment duration was 10.7 (3-102) months. The Complete remission (CR) rate was 84.2% (101/120) and the median time interval to CR was 9.3 (2-84) months. The median follow-up time was 32.9 (1-130) months. The recurrence rate was 31.7% (38/120) and the median time to recurrence was 11 (1-92) months. The cumulative CR rate by 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 24 months was 21.7%, 36.7%, 50.8%, 61.7%, 70.8%, 74.2%, and 78.3% respectively. The CR rates in group A and B were 86.7% and 82.7% in group A and B. The recurrence rates in two group were 35.6% and 29.3%, respectively. Conclusion: Fertility sparing treatment with high dose progestin over 9 months in early stage endometrioid EC has showed high rate of CR. However, medical treatment over 9 months should counsel with patients in detail and oncologists should make careful decision.

A large variety of alcohols react with diacid dichlorides such as malonic and succinic dichloride in the presence of a catalytic amount of tetracarbonylhydridoferrate at room temperature under carbon monoxide or nitrogen to give the corresponding diesters in good yields. It is also worthy of note that diethyl malonate is obtained in 97% yield using KHFe(O)_4 as a catalyst and in only 38% yield when K_2Fe(CO)_4 is used. The addition of acid-trapping agents such as triethylamine or N, N-dimethylaniline is not necessary. The mechanism of these reactions is investigated.
