Causes and Contexts of Domestic Violence: Tales of Help- Seeking Married Women in Sylhet, Bangladesh

Domestic violence (DV) against married women is widely prevalent across Bangladesh and this merits nuanced attention. Multifarious factors are believed to perpetuate DV in different socioeconomic contexts within the country. This study aimed to understand the causes and contexts of DV in the Sylhet region (a distinct sub-culture that carries Sylheti identity). This was a qualitative study based on the experiences of 42 victims of DV who sought help from two social welfare organizations, namely ‘Women Support Program (WSP)’ and ‘Bangladesh Legal Aid and Services Trust (BLAST)’, both located in Sylhet. Using in-depth interviews, we tried to interact with the victims to retrieve the causes and contexts of DV in Sylhet. Findings revealed that a number of factors led to DV. These causal and contextual factors for DV were dowry practice, illiteracy, cultural approval of wife beating, women’s silence, polygyny, socioeconomic dependency of the wife, conflicts related to extra- and premarital affairs, poverty, stigmatization, and drug addiction of the husband. The study concluded that all these factors could be brought under the umbrella of age-old patriarchal cultural values that continue to create the contexts where DV takes place unabated

Metachronous Cancer of Breast and Adenocarcinoma of Cervix: A Rare Case Report

The occurrence of a second primary cancer in a cancer survivor is well documented. It may be synchronous or metachronous. Incidence of metachronous cancer involving cervix is 0.82% to 1.33%. One such metachronous cancer is that of breast and cervix. We present a case of a woman who received tamoxifen for invasive ductal cancer of breast following a modified radical mastectomy and subsequently developed adenocarcinoma of cervix after six month of tamoxifen therapy. The role of tamoxifen in pathogenesis of cervical cancer and that of human papillomavirus infection in pathogenesis of both cancer of cervix and breast cancer has been well recognized. In our patient, the adenocarcinoma of cervix (rare occurrence) which is likely due to six month of tamoxifen therapy is a perplexing question. Women diagnosed and treated for breast cancer need to be followed up for development of other metachronous gynecological cancers. (J Menopausal Med 2017;23:131-134)

Guava (Psidium guajava L.) Powder as an Antioxidant Dietary Fibre in Sheep Meat Nuggets

This study was conducted to explore the antioxidant potential and functional value of guava (Psidium guajava L.) powder in muscle foods. Guava powder was used as a source of antioxidant dietary fibre in sheep meat nuggets at two different levels i.e., 0.5% (Treatment I) and 1.0% (Treatment II) and its effect was evaluated against control. Guava powder is rich in dietary fibre (43.21%), phenolics (44.04 mg GAE/g) and possesses good radical scavenging activity as well as reducing power. Incorporation of guava powder resulted in significant decrease (p<0.05) in pH of emulsion and nuggets, emulsion stability, cooking yield and moisture content of nuggets while ash and moisture content of emulsion were increased. Total phenolics, total dietary fibre (TDF) and ash content significantly increased (p<0.05) in nuggets with added guava powder. Product redness value was significantly improved (p<0.05) due to guava powder. Textural properties did not differ significantly except, springiness and shear force values. Guava powder was found to retard lipid peroxidation of cooked sheep meat nuggets as measured by TBARS number during refrigerated storage. Guava powder did not affect sensory characteristics of the products and can be used as source of antioxidant dietary fibre in meat foods.
